No, not really...

But I do want to say that after the drama of the past few months, it's nice to not see Fighting Street exploding with internet rage.

Turns out the bannings did some good...even if we lost our liberty in the process.

Permanently banning people for the crime of saying unpopular things does nothing to enrich an online message board in my view, it does exactly the opposite.

Permanently banning people for the crime of saying unpopular things does nothing to enrich an online message board in my view, it does exactly the opposite.
When you portray what RegalSin was doing in particular as merely saying "unpopular things," you're falsely minimizing it - such a poor characterization is very lacking in context, thus dishonest and/or ignorant. You do this a lot actually... I refer to these as "out-of-context arguments" or selective. You can drop that kind of defense at just about anything...

Here's a guy that's been banned on dozens of forums due to promoting pedophilia, with years of serial offenses everywhere he's been and only finally got banned here after a) admitting that police raided his home and took harddrives due to pedo images and/or videos, and b) his stupid little pedo-trolling comment about how a 12 year old girl in a short Kill Bill anime should've been referred to as a young woman, not girl and how it was unfair that men (an evil Yakuza boss in that case) were somehow being generalized as pedophiles, etc. It could've all been his usual trolling, but if that's the most that he has to contribute 'round here, then I say give him a break for a while. The permanence of his ban is not clear BTW, so don't cry or break out the violins for him just yet.

Also, I'd say your view of anarchy, no moderation, etc. "does nothing" to enrich an online message board as well, it can lead to quite the opposite in fact. ;) There are obvious consequences to that approach like the voluntary loss of good members as shitty members build up and enjoy a free reign, etc. For example, I liked a member here called GUTS from way back. When I started posting here again, I noticed that he had deleted his account and I wondered why. Esteban mentioned a forum where he was at, so I contacted him and asked him about what had happened. He cited the fighting/mudslinging as part of the reasons, etc. Yess, I'm sure he could've just put everyone in question on ignore as is your solution in every case it seems, but it's not so simple. Had another guy recently PM'ing me that he's gonna leave because of the same sort of thing, etc. If a lot of Xray types were joining the board, knowing that, I would not want to be associated with it and I'd eventually leave, etc. You're gonna learn the character of the type of people you're hanging around with and eventually it's gonna bother ya enough to leave... I'm gonna choose to "ignore" the whole board (like say GameFAQs), not just rack up my ignore count over time with individuals... Point is obvious and simple: no regulation/moderation has consequences as does over-regulation/moderation...

BTW, weren't you shilling for Colonel Gaddafi in that anti-Islam video thread ? You've been quite the defender of the "unpopular" lately, haven't ya ? ;) I've noticed... So add in that Libyan freakshow of a deranged dictator, Xray the racist hatemonger that was making Nazi SA lighted signs in his garage, along with RegalSin, a serial pedofiend (a conclusion made by other forums as well, not just here) who admitted (or at least claims) that police raided his home for pedo images and/or videos... Ya know, there are better things to do than come to the defense of these clowns in particular unless, I dunno, you're trying to build up a resume worthy of an ACLU lawyer perhaps...? Just sayin'. ;) Heh.

Anyhow, I strongly disagree with your view and the fact is, it's provably false (the notion that getting rid of assclowns now and then will make a forum worse, by God, "forum enrichment" was put at risk with the loss of RegalSin! )... But over-regulation, too much banning at the slightest bit of something unpopular, sure, then I'd agree with ya, but that's NOT what happened here and you'd be promoting a ridiculously false narrative in Regal's case to claim as such... Finally, like I said, anarchy has the effect of getting rid of good members too (albeit voluntarily which is provable; I cited some cases, others can as well), that is, allowing shitty members to shit on everything, creating a shitty overall atmosphere and thus naturally causing the loss of good members (*if* you have them and limiting/reducing the ability to attract new ones), and I don't think you've ever factored that into your thought process in anything that you've said thus far (yours is just a simple solution of, "Hey, I like RegalSin, just put him on ignore if you don't!")...

I don't get it. In the other thread people were telling Ragtime to "drop it already", yet now there's a new thread instigating the debate all over again?

Call it a hunch, but I think Ragtime struck a few nerves in that other thread because no one, save maybe Nightwolve, could debate the principles he was defending. For just one person against a wave of others, Ragtime held his argument quite well! 8)

What can I say? I like the unpopular wackos. :)

Here's the deal: I vehemently disagree with ragtime. I think his characterizations of this country are beyond offensive and I've said as much. However, hard as it may be to believe, he's entitled to his opinion and I'm entitled to be pissed about it. At the end of the day, this is a PCE/TG forum and I value his insight in that regard. The day I see him advocating child sex or killing Americans is the day I'll vocally call for his ban.  That will also be the day I'll personally turn him over to authorities.

VestCunt

Guess I missed the previous fight, but skimming some of Ragtime's posts I don't see what the big deal is. Did he do anything besides criticize our foreign policies? Were people surprised that we've been supporting dictators and terrorists for the last half century?

I agree with this statement, but it doesn't apply to the banned members that you're defending.
1) The things Xray and Regal said weren't merely unpopular, they were violent. I argued the case for dehumanizing speech = violence here.
2) They weren't banned for being unpopular, they were banned for breaking the rules we all agree to when we create an account. If we don't like the rules, we're free to either lobby Aaron to change them or we can go start our own message boards. You'd have a valid point if this forum had a monopoly on self expression, but it doesn't. Defending banned members after-the-fact and preaching about "enrichment" is a waste of time.

Your quest for a diverse sea of vocalities, brimming with racism and annoying nutjobs, can be found on cable TV, Fox News, and the wider internet, not PCEFX.

Vestcoat, despite missing the previous discussion, you summed it up perfectly with your agreement and your two points.

And Keranu, I didn't mean to reopen this can of retarded worms. I was simply stating that since those two diseased jerkoffs were banned, it's been much more civil and far less retarded around here, and that I appreciated the relative calm. I ended with a joke about "liberty", so I guess that re-lit the fire. But hey, good times. ;)

Heh-heh. I guess I missed the fact that this was a quotable by someone noteworthy. It seems though the original quote has been misattributed to Thomas Jefferson, but it goes back to a John Philpot Curran and a restated/shortened quote of, "Eternal Vigilance is the price of freedom." I thought this was just a take on "Freedom is not Free!" (a modern, post 9/11 invention), but I didn't know it went back much further than that! My derivative quote of "Those Who Sacrifice Liberty For Security Deserve Neither" is of course by none other than ole Ben Franklin. Anyway, good show! ;) Ya learn something new every once in a while 'round here!

Oh, if you're still here, question for ya, in the other thread you said, "rag-time4: Electric Boogaloo". I saw the movie, but I don't get your joke. I know explaining it ruins it, but what's your angle with that comment? ;) I wanted to ask before actually. Heh.

I dunno Keranu, I didn't mind; I think the idea was to poke a little fun at what had transpired with rags. Just as some of us were looking forward to a vacation from Regal, for however long, Rags showed up and essentially began lobbying for his return and sounding as if like a great injustice and misuse of banning powers had occurred... There's so much silliness to it, him talking like a wanna-be founding founder about it all, framing it in a political context: "The call for militant mods is a call for a nanny state! Freedom of speech is under assault! We're entering dangerous territory here! Unpopular speech should NOT be a crime! NEVER give up on liberty I say, NEVER, in the end, it usually works better!" I mean, it's funny, and if you're good at it, there are plenty of lulz to come up with from his overreaction and approach.

He also resorted to attacking us that supported the ban with terms like "witchhunt" and "pogroms" which I honestly take as slander/defamation. For me, that's what hit a nerve (also his equating of the US to Nazis, in the manner in which he did so too, "Hey, I agree with Xray on that!", etc.). Actually, that's what got the fight started with RegalSin and myself via PM, because that was also his method of defense for the treatment of Xray, calling it a "witchhunt." That struck a nerve! I told him to back it up [with the facts] or shut the fuck up! A witchhunt to me is using false information/accusations to falsely convict and prosecute the target. The picture that I have of the origins of the term are say of a village and some ugly toad of man that gets turned down by a woman, so in a fit of rage because of his rejection, he runs around the village and falsely accuses her of being a witch, and because he has some leadership respect in the village, he's able to round up a mob with pitchforks that grab her, tie her up and eventually burn her. No trial, no real evidence, just the wild accusations of an asshole and the ignorance of the mob leading to a deadly result.

Well, Xray actually WAS a witch, all the evidence was 100% factual, so I demanded Regal tell me where false information or accusations were used, which of course, he couldn't do... I learned quite a bit from the little pedofiend, as in his English actually improves when he's angry and engaged in a debate and the fact that he deeply resents that there's a page out on him (http://history.sydlexia.com/index.php?title=RegalSin) and that his past (or somebody else's) can come back to haunt him, the way that it did Xray... It really, deeply, got under his skin that Professor did opposition research on Xray and brought forward all that evidence of him attending chimpout.com, selling a Nazi SA sign on eBay, etc. and rather than look at Xray and say, hey, this guy is a fucking asshole, he preferred to look at Professor, me, jibbajabba, etc. as the REAL bad guys for digging up all that dirt and bringing it to everyone's attention. Truth is truth, if you said it or did it on the Internet, tough fucking shit, be prepared for blowback some time down the road! Whatever the motivations are of the messengers is less relevant, as long as it's factual and not a pack of lies, etc.

Long story short, Regal and I went at it for quite a bit, lots and lots of expletives on my part were sent to be honest, he even got into politics about US v Nazis, etc. and it ended with him putting me on ignore, which I was very proud of BTW because he finally got a sense of how the 16-18 or so people who had him on ignore feel! :D

QuoteWhat can I say? I like the unpopular wackos. :)
If you look back at some of my posts about him, I used to agree with you. Heh. I thought there was a certain charm to him and where everybody else was being rude to him, I was still being respectful. Well, suffice to say, the charm wore off and a man is allowed to change his mind now and then. ;)

Here's the deal on the cons of banning:

1) Temporary ban: When the affected individual comes back, he starts bitching/giving shit towards the moderator that banned him. I think this is what contributed to Joe and perhaps you as well from refraining and not caring to perform "quality control" duties. I suspect you in particular probably just want to be cool with everybody and unless there are death threats, personal home address postings or porno links, little meets your threshold for being inappropriate.

2) Permanent ban: The thing about this is, if you've got a pathetic loser/psychopath and you didn't know it at the time, you give him purpose in his otherwise miserable and failed existence in taking up the cause of "burning the house down" and they can always come back via a proxy server. Case in point, your Nintega. My case was Vision-Z, a ban from our IRC chatroom resulted in years of stalking, harassment, extortion, mail bombing, lobbying other members, telling lies/slander, etc. all to get the ban lifted and send a message of "NOBODY BANS ME AND GETS AWAY WITH IT! YURRR GONNA BE SORRY!! I PROMISE YOU!!! I WILL MAKE IT MY MISSION IN LIFE TO DESTROY YOU!!!", etc.

Conclusion: You're damned if you do, damned if you don't, actually... So my position or advice for others would be more on the temporary ban and settling for the verbal abuse that might come back towards the mod that did it from the affected person. I don't think either are applicable to RegalSin, but yeah... You know, he did register on http://pcengine.freeforums.org/ after the ban here, but sunteam_paul deleted him. ;) Heh-heh. Poor fella...

Haha! Gotcha.

Quote from: From Wiki"Since the release of the film, the subtitle "Electric Boogaloo", a reference to a funk-oriented dance style of the same name, has been used to refer to sequels pejoratively. Yeah, I didn't know this, that it became a pejorative term in pop culture. I never saw the first Breakin', I don't think, but I remember Boogaloo alright. ;) Maybe my standards were low back then as a kid, but I enjoyed it I recall.
