Want to eat? Unlimited continues in Bravoman

Hey guys, I am working my way through Bravoman with the gf. It's simple enough that she can play it, although she dies often and the game has limited continues so we aren't making a ton of progress. On gaming sites there is a cheat listed for getting unlimited continues by getting exactly 10,000 points, dying and then inputting up, right, down, left, II, Select, II, Select at the start screen. I have tried this a couple times now but to no avail. Is there something I am doing wrong? Is there any sound or message or anything that will let you know you have entered it correctly? Please share with me the tips from the gods.

From most sites it says flick I to turbo, press I and Select and then spam press Left to get multiple continues while on the game over screen...naturally, I can't get that to work.

I believe that you're supposed to hold select and then alternate "I" and Left as fast as you can.
