Which is best for lubing up cd drives on consoles? White lithium spray or silicone grease? These are the only options I have where I live sadly.

I prefer white lithium spray myself. Works great for cleaning and re-greasing the CD lens rails. Not sure what others prefer. You just need a steady hand/finger to make sure it doesn't spray everywhere.

I have been using the white lithium in a tube. non spray. I usually just slide it across the top of the rails and it seems to work fine.

I use Tamiya white ceramic grease HG, because that's what I've got in my box of R/C car spare parts. It is approved by Tamiya to got between metal/plastic and plastic/plastic.

spray grease is dangerous to use ona cd system, as any overspray gets into the laser assy and it will need replaced

I use tube and toothpick to apply grease.  Too much can be bad and spray can be difficult to control in a small area.  Toothpick is easier to control and apply with.

I saw WD40 for a second by itself, and thought I was gonna have to remind someone of a technical fact, that it's a temporary, cleaning lube that soon evaporates, heh.

Anyway, white lithium grease is what was used, what you should continue to use. A spray sounds messy, so probably best to stick with a tube.

It's also best to use white lithium grease that is not petroleum based. Petroleum can break down plastics.  The kind clod buster recommended is a good one.

I use a tube for the same reasons thesteve talked about.  The spray goes everywhere and I spend as much time cleaning up afterwards as I would have just using the tube to begin with

Thanks guys! I'll buy a tube of silicone for now and I'll order a tube of white lithium online :)
