 I am buying a Coregraphx from Dlite and I need to know what the must have shmups are. I'm not looking to spend a load of money but I want the best bang for my buck. I will eventually add all the shmups to my library but for now I just need to get started. Any advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Well I like Darius Plus and Gradius, though both are hard after you lose a life. Galaga 88 is old school, but it's still my favourite PC Engine game bar none.
R-Type is popular, though I'm not totally convinced by it I must say.

no i didn't. this one is crazy crap which i sold once to a even more crazy guy at the gamenight in kloten few years ago.

For my money it doesn't get any better than Gunhed.  Super Star Soldier a close second.

I grew up with R-Type so I really enjoy it.  The PCE/Turbo version is better than any other console at the time.

just kidding with my swiss-buddy. as you can see, i still own that one O:). but it's true, that it isn't a fav of mine, and as we discussed this already in an other thread, i think it's often overated.
