@GTV reviews the Cosmic Fantasy 1-2 Switch collection by Edia, provides examples of the poor English editing/localization work. It's much worse for CF1. Rated "D" for disappointment, finding that TurboGrafx CF2 is better & while CF1's the real draw, Edia screwed it up...

Has this ever happened to you?

My buddy and I were playing DE last night, and we got to Grimrose. We killed the center blossom, and we each took a lower corner and shot at the side blossoms.
Then, we killed the remaining two blossoms at the exact same time...but then, nothing happened! The boss music kept on playing, no crystals appeared, and those stupid Dull Pixies kept bouncing around the room at high speed.

We ended up having to reset, but at least we weren't that far in the game.

It's worth pointing out that I've played this game (both alone and with friends) about 45,000 times, so I know this isn't supposed to happen, and that I didn't just miss something.

But yeah. Anybody?

That happened to me once before when I was writing down passwords for a certain character (it might have been the Elf). I think what I've done to provoke this was to shoot down the Crown of Intelligence that could be recieved before reaching her. I did indeed had to reset the game in order to get the game going again.

I wonder, too, if it has to do with the old age of the console? I remember when playing with my Sega Genesis about seven years ago that, as it was about to reach the age of six years, it started to make a great deal of miscalculations. There were enemies in Aladdin that appeared in the Normal or Hard difficulty settings appearing in Easy (though maybe it was set to Normal in the few of the several instances that occurred), and in The Lion King, Simba in his adult form was killed by the boulder that was idle on top of the cliff by going near it (and my sister was at play for this), which normally doesn't happen in most cases. There were also odd notes that occured some of the time, and might have happened in The Jungle Book, too. With the TurboGrafx-16, too, Ninja Spirit and Bonk's Adventure had odd notes playing, and Ninja Spirit even froze once on the "Music Library" screen once. Then again, I don't know of it's age...

I'd figure somebody would give a couteraction to that statement; it seemed to be a thought that has occurred in youth that would be stated against on the Internet :(.

Alas, you can be right. As I thought the Ninja Spirit card needed to be wiped clean in order to work properly, it managed to help the game function better after doing so and putting it in my TurboGrafx-16 again.

Take it from an Atari 2600 collector: It's the dirt. Either actual dirt or oxidized contacts, which interfere with the data read from the cart rom, and you get weird stuff. It used to be considered a secret feature, back in the day. On the 2600 you'd 'glitch' or 'fry' the cart by jiggling contacts to see what would happen. On certain games you could get extra lives, turbo shot, or any of a number of weird effects. It was what we did before there was the game genine, back in my day.

Now get offa my lawn!

Well, what's the recommended way to clean the contacts? Just Iso and a foam swab?

Duo_R

A cleaning kit:

Also, I saw this post from a arcade/console repair guy:

QuoteCleaned the HuCard slot then resoldered it to finish the repair.

How did I clean it? Wrap a sheet of rough paper over the top of the HuCard, put enough pure alcohol on it to wet the paper then slide it in and out of the slot a few times. It came out pretty dirty.

Hmmm...
Well, I don't think I'll hold out for a Performance cleaning kit, but I will eventually try the "rough paper taped over a chip" method.

I have just the paper, too! I work for Intel, and in the clean rooms we use special paper that is treated in such a way that makes it not tear easily, and not give off particles. As a bonus, it's a little on the rough side.

I don't plan on doing it for a while, though. But I'll let you know how it works!

guyjin

Define 'rough paper'. like paper towels, or something more?

I just used a type of rag that can clean glasses (without any water, of course). That does the job nicely to remove any stains on the connectors on the card.

In all seriousness, though, saliva does contain salts and mild acids...licking metal contacts would likely cause corrosion in the long run. Plus, it's nasty!

Ha!! Surely we all remember the "which kind of cartridge do you prefer shoved up your butt?" poll?

This has already been addressed!

I had never thought about the whole salt saliva thing, but, tongues definitely get the stuff off them, followed by a tshirt swipe.   On the fly cleaning is fun!

Maybe i'll stop licking them though.   :-" :-" :-"

...They do still taste good though. (Lick a video card or something, I tell no lies! They taste like good)
