So, I dug the old broken Marty out of the closet today.  It will not read CDs, adjusting the laser pot (it only has one) does nothing.   So I finally took the whole thing apart to look at the board (pain in the ass due to tons of shielding plates.

Only thing I could see are these caps.  The have black stuff on top that looks like magic marker.  One swipe with a tissue wipes it off.  Are these caps bad?  I've seen brown stuff from caps before, but nothing like this.

interesting that the black stuff are straight lines, it does look a little like marker. I can open up mine and take a look.

i have often seen old stock parts marked that way.
the pi isnt clear enough to tell is the caps are split on top (prevent) caps only.

SignOfZeta

Its just marker. Not an uncommon site.

sounds interesting... I just recently got into the marty, trying to work with it and figure out some things here and there. there really isn't all that much info on the system. I hope your top secret project is some sort of attachable drive large enough to hold a ton of quality marty games :)

Also, I can confirm with SignOfZeta, its just marker on the caps. the ones i had with the same marker on my board were not part of the cd-rom board, so even if they do need to be replaced, I don't think it has to do with your cd not working. of course i could be completely wrong though.
