Looking for Alien Crush advice...

I'm playing quite a bit of Alien Crush lately, but I don't quite grasp the concept. How do the multipliers work? Is there a different multiplier for the upper and bottom part? Why is that sometimes when I put the ball into that weird skull's mouth, I lose the multiplier? What is a fast way of getting high scores? I`ve read the bonus games are a good method, but they are not that fast, giving you a million points at most.
