Wonderswan

Anybody got a Wonderswan- I picked a SwanCrystal up a few months ago and I have had more fun with it than my kid's GBA. It's up there with the PCE in term of being obscure and it also has some top notch shooters so I thought someone here might have an interest in it. If you have one what do you think the best games are? The best I've played are Gundam UC, Run=Dim, Guilty Gear, and Golden Axe-

i have wonderswan, ws color, ws crystal though mainly use ws crystal w/ gunpei ex... top game if you ask me...

I've always been curious about the Wonderswan series, but never put much thought into them. Now that you say there are good shooters for it, I am interested in learning about it more and playing it.

Ditto. I never really looked into the WS library. Tell me that the games aren't too expensive and I'll pick one up.

I've also been curious about GP32 (well, I think there is a newer model out now). Of course, now that the PSP is out, I don't know where the best handheld emulation can be found. But prior to the PSP's release, I was really considering the GP32. I'm not even a big emulation fan -- it was really just for the novelty of it, and playing with a new gadget.

Now, since money's tight, I'm not going to invest in handheld emulation anytime soon.

GP32/GP2X is superior to the PSP when it comes to emulation.

D-pad is terrible on it in my opinion. I remember playing Guilty Gear Petit and I had a hard time pulling off moves.

I'm also turned off by the fact that it also has no light, i have to line it up with the solar system to get perfect light like GBA1 and all others preceding it.

However I do have an unopened WSC Final Fantasy II that I bought from a anime con for 15 bucks to keep for decoration.

The d-pad and lack of backlight do kinda suck- but you get almost forty hours of playtime on 1 AA battery. Funny thing is you can pick up a Swancrystal new for $20-30 shipped, but some of the best games are $50+( Judgement Silversword, Dicing Knight, Run=Dim, Makimira. For good games in the $10-30 range I would recommend Gundam UC, Gundam Seed, Final Lap Special, Star Hearts, and Guilty Gear. I've also heard good things about Front Mission and both Rockman titles.

I've heard bad stuff about the GP2X- cheaply made, technical issues. I would love to have a handheld that can do what it does with emulators, but there's a lot of horror stories out there.

Those GP2X were mainly the first production release that came out in september 2005 and those were for the developers. The latest models being sold now under the name "second edition" have updated software that fixes all those technical issues.

Back on topic, are there any good shooters on the WS?

You had me at Final Lap Special. Actually, you had me when you listed a few shooters, but I forgot to say that in my prior post.

Hmmm.... a new WS for only $30? Damn! If my wife doesn't let me get one, I'll have to convince my brother to pick one up. I'm used to playing non-illuminated handhelds (i.e. original Gameboy), so I don't think I'll have a problem with the WS screen. Of course, I know I'll want WSC.

I've thought about picking one up too since they're dirt cheap, but the high price of the good games turned me off. Plus most of the games are made by Bandai and that company is basically the Acclaim of Japan, they fucking SUCK hardcore so that doesn't give me much hope for the games being any good.

If you get one go for the SwanCrystal rather than the Color- It's a little sleeker and the screen is nicer. According to most sources the best shooter is Judgement Silversword. It is the "Radient Silvergun" of the handheld world. I really want this one but I can't find a copy for under $100. After than Run=Dim is excellent, but again hard to find. I looked for 6 months and finally found it for $50. That was the 1st and last time I've seen it listed since. Gundam Seed is good and so is Gundam UC Operation. There's a b/w port of Space Invaders. There's also two Rockman games and Makiamura.

Sad but true- but almost all the games from a 3rd party rocked.

Well the Wonderswan was also designed by the late Gunpei Yokoi, in which the game Gunpey was named after him. Same man who brought us Game Boy, Kid Icarus etc

I believe it was still in prodution around the time of his death in 1997

I bought the FFII LE set plus FF & FFIV back when each were new and played each through a few times.

I sold everything after I didn't feel like playing those games again anytime soon and once it seemed that FFIII wouldn't make it out after all.

I'm really disappointed that FFIII is getting a major overhaul for DS. I just want the original with upgraded graphics and sound.

Its the best FF ever in my personal opinion.

For real, and I think I'm one of a few people here in the USA that owns and beat the actual FF3 Famicom cartridge. Turned out to be the easiest FF i've ever beaten, even in Japanese.

A hell of a lot easier than FFII, thats for sure.

Nothing beats hitting yourself in the head for hours at a time just so that you can do the next dungeon(but I still like the game).

I almost beat FF2j as well I only got to experience a small bit of Pandemonium, but then some major problem with the controller port 1 on my Fami*clone* happened. The controls started reversing, I unplugged the controller put it back in, and then the game froze. Then I turned on and off the game properly, and it fucking erased all my hard work!

I need a real authentic Nintendo Famicom system badly. Not no cheap Hong Kong clone. I lost my ghetto NES/FC converter that I got out of my Stack Up cartridge somewhere in my room.

EDIT: on a tangent, Messiah is reconsidering the errors made on their Generation NEX system. The next wave of NEX's could be enjoyed by hardcore FC gamers in the future

They're looking into issues like (hopefully) the compatibility with the Japanese custom mappers, Castlevania III and the sound.
