Princess Maker - Playable?

Hey Gang,

I know Princess Maker looks heavy on the Japanese, but outside of understanding what each icon/action does, once you know that is the game fairly playable? Or are there quests or some specific stuff you need to know or you'll be lost?

I believe that the SFC version has been translated into English. Why not play that version till you get the hang of it and then see how you fair with the PCE version? The aesthetics are worth the effort.
