Hey everyone,

I've just bought a new TurboGrafx console and I have a question about the AC adapter.

Although I thought I was buyng a US syatem I think I may have picked up a PAL one but I am not entirely sure and this poses a problem when deciding whether or not to use a step down convertor or a regular Euro to UK adapter.

Here is the info from the bottom of the console:

NEC TurboGrafx (PAL)
Product Code: HES-TGX-11
Rating: DC 10.5V 780mA
AC Adapter: Use only with the AC adapter designed for this product.

Here is the info from the AC adapter provided:

NEC AC Adapter
Product Code: HES-ACA-12
AC adapter for use with NEC TurboGrafx (PAL)
Input: 220 VAC 50Hz
Output: 10.5V DC 780mA

I just don't want to fry the system as soon as I've got it.

All the leads came in a separate NEC TurboGrafx accessories box.

Thanks

You'll be fine. Just make sure the polarity is correct on the plug. My Duo-R is center positive, but my Core Grafx is center negative.

I Retro. It's very easy to see if you have a European vs. North American TG. Check out these pics and descriptons:
[edit: crap, looks like www.nfggames.com is down?]

1. Euro TG has GRAY plastic (as opposed to black plastic for N.A.)
2. Euro says "TurboGrafx". N.A. says "TurboGrafx-16"

Also, here is an excerpt from the TurboGrafx / DUO FAQ:
QuoteB: AC Adaptor Ratings:
----------------------

        DUO:
                Input:  120V AC 60HZ 16W
                Output: 10V DC 1000mA
Center plug is positive, the outer is negative.

        Turbo Express:
                Input:  120V AC 60HZ 13W
                Output: 7V DC 700mA
Center plug is positive, the outer is negative.

        TG-16:
                Model:  HES-ACA-01
                Input:  120V AC 60HZ 15W
                Output: 10.5V DC 730mA
Center plug is negative, the outer is positive.

        TG+CD:
                Model:  HES-ACA-02
                Input:  120V AC 60HZ 24W
                Output: 11V DC 1.53A (1530 mA)
Center plug is negative, the outer is positive.

                Model:  HES-ACA-03
                Input:  120V AC 60HZ 28W
                Output: 11V DC 1.53A (1530 mA)
Center plug is negative, the outer is positive.

Note:  When buying replacement adaptors other than these recommended
by the manufacturer, the general rule is:
                  - Match the generic AC adaptor's DC voltage equal or as
close as possible to the manufacturer's adaptor.
                  - Make sure the generic adaptor's current rating (mA/A) is
equal or higher than the manufacturer's adaptor.
                  - Make sure the polarity matches!

Thanks for your advice.

I already know that I would need an adapter to play Jap games on a US machine but what region games can play on a PAL machine?

MottZilla

There are no PAL machines. Well, no real PAL machines. It was never released there. If you have a "PAL" machine, it's actually a TG16 outputting PAL. That means US cards work. Or if its a PCE outputting PAL, jap cards work.

To find out which hucards you can play, I suggest getting a cheap hucard of either US or JP region. If it loads up, you know what you've got. Otherwise, assume if you unit says Turbo anything, it takes US cards.

Seldane

The Turbo Grafx 16 was released in Europe and the PAL version is fairly different from its American counterpart. It natively outputs PAL video and has a differently colored case.

For some reason, it is very easy to get ahold of this system (at least in Sweden) new and unused.

I don't think any games ever made it here though, they're import-only. The PAL machine plays NA games, but in 50Hz.

Indeed, it's AV time. Check out: IMG! Sir, the door was open.
