2/13/2025: Localization News - Cosmic Fantasy 3-4!

Rather earth-shattering news in the PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 community: Cosmic Fantasy 3 & 4 has been officially localized to English by Edia 30 years later for the Switch! Hard to believe! I know their script quality is poor given the 1&2 port but still good to see.

I've been doing a lot of recording lately, & one thing that has bothered me, is that the hes file for Bravoman is clearly missing a sound channel.  It's most noticable in the title screen.  I try'd contacting King Shriek to see if he could try his hand at it, but, haven't gotten any responses.  Anyone know of anyone else that can maybe redo the file?

Yes, that Chris Covell guy did a few, and he seems to be the Neo of TurboGrafx.  If you can get ahold of him he could probably do it in his sleep.  Oh yeah, did you check zophar.net?
The Turbo was Dual Core when Dual Core wasn't cool . . .

ParanoiaDragon

Yeah, I've checked Zophar.  Hmm, maybe I'll see if I can reach Chris on IRC.

Here's the rerip of Bravoman.  Whoever did the original rip is either a complete idiot, or got the HES extraction script wrong.  (The broken HES was 160k, when there is only about 32k of data in the music code anyway.)

Paranoia: I have started making some CD HES rips; you can see a ripping thread that got started here.

Here are the other HES rips I've done so far:

Cratermaze's music is quite different from Doraemon's, that's why I ripped it.  If you like this music, I recommend checking out the arcade original, Booby Kids / Kid no Hore Hore Daisakusen.

Awesome!  You rock Chris!

Edit-Er, hate to say this, but, I'm not getting any sound from the Bravoman rerip for some reason.  I even tried chaning the file extension to pce to see if ME would play it.  Am I doing something wrong?  Also, if you need any cd iso's to rip into hes, just let me know, I'd be glad to help out!

That is strange.  The HES works fine as-is in NEZPlug in Winamp and in Mednafen.  MagicEngine doesn't like it, but oh, well.

ParanoiaDragon

Well, I'm updating my Winamp to see if that's my problem :|
IMG

ParanoiaDragon

Updated Winamp, & still nothing.  I don't think there's any kind of update for the plugin, atleast, not that I found.

Also, I listened to Impossamole hes, & I noticed several of the songs get faded & some even cut off before they end.  I'm not sure if there's something I can do to fix that, or, it it would take your expertise.

Try Ootake or Yame just to cover all the bases.
The Turbo was Dual Core when Dual Core wasn't cool . . .

ParanoiaDragon

Wow, didn't even know about Ootake!  Pretty good so far.  Though, sometimes it seems like it really slows my comp down.  Hmm, still can't get Bravoman to work, my computer must hate Bravoman! :( ](*,)  What the hell, everything else works, but, Bravoman.  I've been wanting all the music for this game for years, & I get so close, & wham :?

Hmmm... well, one incompatibility I've found is that .M3u playlists made by the original ripper sometimes don't work with my version of WinAmp.  Perhaps it has to do with what language the computer is set to.  It seems that the length of play, fade, and looping values in the playlists aren't always interpreted correctly.  Try the original HES file (not the playlist) and see if they play fine.

I've also noticed that when a song reaches its end (ie: remains silent), it massively slows down the Winamp operations in NEZPlug.

ParanoiaDragon

Ok, you're right about playing just the hes file, Impossamole seems to work when I don't use the playlist.  Still can't figure out Bravo.  Feel like I'm at the end of my line, don't......know........what.......to.........doooooooooooooo :-&

Thanks for the re-rip Chris. Indeed the original from Ancient Sound Vanished sounded a bit weird.

Most playlists from five or six years ago were made for the in_he2 plugin by Cisc, which used a slightly different syntax. Those playlists won't play correctly with the later NEZplug-based plugins.

PD, I suggest you try NEZplug+ for Winamp. Here is the direct link to the file if Japanese is not your forte. Both the original rip and Chris' re-rip work here. You could also have a go at my updated playlist (will only work with Chris' rip).

ParanoiaDragon

Ok, installed that, still didn't work, then uninstalled HES player plugin.  Now Bravoman works!  Though, now, whenever I play a song, once it's played thru once, when it loops, the quality of the song drops, basically, it sounds muffled.

I'll just say your computer is demonically possessed and move on with my life.   :)

You have uninstalled the NEZplug plugin and now Winamp correctly plays your HES file? It's downright puzzling :)

It most probably means you have another plugin that conflicts with NEZplug. Make sure you don't have an older plugin in the Winamp plugin folder named in_he2.dll. The correct library should be in_nez.dll.

ParanoiaDragon

Yeah, not sure what I did, but now it seems to be working just fine.  With the exception of, when I rip the music, it rips it into 48000, rather then 44100.  But all other types of files(SPC, VGM, PSF) rip at 44100.  Now I'm puzzle about that.  If I force it into 44100, the wav files sound really grainy.  I can live with it being in 48, but, if there's a way to fix that, so it rips it into 44100 like everything else, then, that would rock!

I'm sure you have a good sound editing program, can you just set your soundcard record source to wave mix or whatever, and record it within the program and then save the file to settings of your liking?  I did that once or twice.
The Turbo was Dual Core when Dual Core wasn't cool . . .

ParanoiaDragon

Yeah, I thought about that, but, that also takes longer, & there's more chance of error's, like for instance, little power surges, like if someone turns on something in the house, then a little clip will record, thus making it so I have to re-record it. :?
IMG

ccovell

I'm sure of course you went to Winamp->Preferences, and configured the HES/NEZamp plugin to output 44100 Hz, right?

ParanoiaDragon

Wow, the ini file, never even thought of that ](*,)  Well, I never claimed to be smart about computers
