How do you get photographs of fireworks?

put my digicam on a stativ, set the night scenary mode (keeps the lens open till enough light is collected, means of several seconds) and shot when the big bangs are arising into sky did that the first time, and the result looks quite good, since it's just a $300 play'n shot digicam.
