10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

Just got done with some play time on World Heroes 2, and Fatal Fury 2.  Both are fun games that I have never tried before.  Fatal Fury 2 has very large character sprites, with a somewhat limited roster.  Sound effects, and music were both good (not great), controls well enough.

World Heroes 2 has been a game I wanted shortly after I got back into PCE/Turbo.  FINALLY got around to playing it tonight :)  Wile the character sprites are smaller than those in FF 2, I PERSONALLY find the characters more likable (and the roster is slightly larger here).  The music and sound effects are good, a step up from FF 2, while the music is also good.  I find the controls decent, but seem a hair more "clunky" than FF2.

I like the Street Fighter II port on the system.  Very impressive for a PCE game though I still mostly play it on the Super Famicom.

Never spend much time with the SNK ports.  They look pretty good on the PCE but I have all of them for my Neo already and I prefer those versions (and the controller).

The Kabuki fighting game I think is the most impressive looking original fighting game on the system.  Great animation.

As has been said before the PCE is not really a fighter system but it does have respectable games from the genre.  After reading this thread I really want to try the Godzilla game.

List your top ten/five/two/one/whatever.  Here are my fab five:

#5 Godzilla
Excellent presentation, and controls that are much smoother than they're typically given credit for.

#4 Kabuki Ittouryoudan
An SF2 clone, to be sure, but it feels great.  And, being a Kabuki Den fan, I love the cast of characters.

#3 Street Fighter 2' CE
Fucking awesome port, though I can't help but yearn for the speed and audio of SNES Turbo.

#2 Art of Fighting
Technically, this should be a couple spots lower, but it's kind of a personal favorite, as I really dig the gameplay.  Go figure.

#1 Asuka 120%
Gives me everything I could ask for in a fighter: fast gameplay, smooth controls, great music, accessible action, fun characters and attack moves, good multiplayer, and a few cute girls.

I've played a bunch of others (Advanced VG, Fatal Fury Special and 2, Ranma 3, Fighting Street...), but those five are head and shoulders above them.

Two that I haven't tried yet are Flash Hiders and World Heroes 2.  Some reshuffling may be in other after I get my hands on those.
Flash Hiders is just awesome and one of my alltime favorite fighting games

I have to go with this lineup:

5.Fatal Fury special

4.Street fighter II

3.Kabuki

2.Asuka 120%

1.Flash Hiders

Too many long posts here, so back on topic :

actually, my favourite pce fighting games are not ports. Why? Just because when you play fighting game ports, they feel like they are ports. I mean, Fatal Fury Special is a very great port indeed but some of the backgrounds are not very nice (Andy Bogart's stage, for instance) while others are really well made and are really close to the original (Tung Fu Rue's stage is the most impressive to me). In a way, World Heroes 2 is the best Neogeo port for the PCE as it is the closest to the Neogeo version of the 4 Neogeo ports. Too bad it is a port of a Neogeo average game, even if I like it, though.

So here is my list :

1) Kabuki Itouryoudan : great graphics, great animation, smooth gameplay and you really feel it was developed exclusively for the PCE, as the backgrounds are not overdetailed as some backgrounds in FF Special.

2) Flash Hiders : many people I know don't like it. Some backgrounds I really poor graphic wise but I like the gameplay, the sounds and the animation.

3) Fatal Fury Special : great port. I enjoy playing this game even if I own the Neogeo version.

4) World Heroes 2 : the best Neogeo port on the system, in my opinion

5) Asuka : decent fighting game

I also kinda like Godzilla. It's really different from the usual fighting games but I think it is the best game based on the Godzilla characters of all times (not too hard).
