does anyone know if the metal grounding plates are they same for both styles or are they specific to each style

you wouldn't happen to know where to get a model 1 would you ? i'm trying to snipe a couple on ebay but they're kind of expensive

You know that both models of genesis work with the sega cd 2, yeah?

I'm assuming that you just like the way the sega cd 1 looks, but in case you were going for compatability I thought I'd give you a heads up.

right on, i think i remember the 2nd model having an adapter for model1 genesis...and i just picked up a model 1 genesis/sega cd w/ sms converter on ebay for $104.29...FUKN A ...got lucky. seller said system was used in development of frog feast. what is that game...what came first frogger or frog feast

It did; it came with a piece of plastic that extended the Sega CD. It actually works fine without the extender also, the Genesis just hangs off the side.

A while back I threw away that piece of plastic thinking it would be useless, but after finding out I could S-vid mod the original genesis, I realized what a stupid idea that was....

Officially no, the sega/mega cd is region locked. If you want to play legit different region games, you need to physically swap out the bios rom (or rewrite it via an eprom burner and eprom eraser ) to the desired region as well as mod it so it will play ntsc games at the correct speed as pal. (60-50hz mod). Also you will need to change the internal jumpers on the genesis/megadrive unit itself, to the same region as the bios swapped sega/ mega drive cd as the cd unit expects the same region console before it will work.

Another easier method to play legit games on different regions is to buy a flash cart and program the cd bios with the desired region onto it, boot that in the cart slot and play the desired game.

If it's booting backups all that is required is to hack the header of the image to accept the desired region, burn, play, and enjoy. There are various tools out there for this including a basic general purpose hex editor.

As far as playing import carts goes you can use a game genie to alter the required code to get it to run.

Again keep in mind with pal consoles the whole 50hz/60hz thing.

You mean hardware wise? Kinda like the differences between a US Turbo Duo and a Japanese Duo-r in terms of reliability? AFAIK The hardware is pretty much identical (meaning one model isn't especially more reliable than the other) with the exception of being in 50hz/pal mode and having the European bios, as well as the previously mentioned region caveats for the euro Megadrive. As for the Japanese Megadrive, same thing expect in 60hz ntsc mode like the US. I may be wrong though I haven't heard anything like such and such regions model is more reliable than this other regions model.

Also go for a model 2, although it isn't as coveted as the model 1, that isn't because it is less reliable, it is because model 1's aren't as common and sit perfectly under the genesis taking up less room, plus many prefer front loading drives even though with more moving parts you are likely to have more problems later down the road.

Also model 2's are about $15-20 average while model 1's can command prices upward from $60-80. I have heard rumors about a bug in the bios of the model 2 which causes Lunar 1, Dark Wizard, and probably a few others to sometimes freeze at certain points. Personally though I have not experienced such lock ups and I own Lunar 1 and Dark Wizard, and have played Lunar 1 to completion and Dark Wizard a good ways on a model 2 Sega cd.

no joke, I called Sega customer service back in, well maybe 1995 when Lunar I got stuck while i was playing. The game just froze during a boss fight (I defeated a boss, the music stopped playing, it was stuck). The rep instructed me to hit the upper left side of the CD-Rom with my finger. I could not believe what I was hearing, but he assured me it would work. After two tries the next scene finally loaded. So yeah, there was a bug with the CD2.

found some info on a mega cartridge adapter that allows you to play import games on your system. tried to find out more but didn't want to join another forum. anyone heard of such a thing?

I believe there is also a homebrew multi-bios available for the SCD as well now too.

Yea pretty much. The Sega Cds main issue was they gave it the ability to do some nice things sprite wise,and gave it barely enough memory to do what it was designed to do. With more ram onboard games on it could have been much better,with more going on and way more details. Still,the Sega Cd was a nice add on. It does have a nice selection of keepers,and if you have a import cart to boot Mega Cd games,there is a ton of Mega-CD games that are just awesome.

Model 2s lock up, so do CDX's. Usually tapping them gently on the side will unlock them, but not always.
