Which announced but unreleased Turbo game are you most disappointed about not being released for the domestic Turbo. I pulled together a list of good ones that were announced at various times but not released.
--DragonmasterDan

JoshTurboTrollX

good thread Dan.  That is a sad list of excellent games.  *sigh*

I voted Cosmic Fantasy III as CF2 was one of the best selling turbo CD games, and we could have used another game in the series state side to help sales... but... yeah..

What really disappointed me were games like Dracula X and Ys IV not even being considered for release in the U.S.!!

They both came out too late. By the time those two came out in late 1993 the Turbo was almost dead. TTI was out of business just a few months later. In the case of Dracula X, they also would have had to license it from Konami which would have cost more than they had to spend. Remember, they didn't even have the money to release games they had already licensed, hence the list.

Added in edit: Well, 3 of the games on that list were Working Designs games (the two Neo-Geo ports and CF3). So you can't blame TTI for all of it.

Far East of Eden 2, and Bonk IV: Bonk RPG (prob higher for Bonk as it never got release at all).

Probably Bonk IV, King of the Monsters, and that Dangerous Journeys D&D game, since they don't exist on the PCE either.

Does Neutopia 3 count as announced? I'm pretty disappointed that never came out.

My vote was for the Bonk RPG.  If it turned out half as good as the Super Mario RPG on the SNES it would have been awesome!

Any chance of updating the list?  It's missing a lot of games.

My vote is for Dangerous Journeys.  I would have loved the novelty of seeing Bonk RPG, but it probably would have been another crappy, linear, mascot JRPG like that Mario RPG on SNES.

Not getting Battle Load Runner barely bothers me at all as the import version is readily available and fully playable.

I chose Bonk RPG for two reasons. One, it seems like it would've been fun, no matter how it turned out. Two, I'm not ultra-familiar with the lineage of the other titles mentioned.

It was a hard choice for me between CF3 & Manji Maru.  I chose CF3 because I already had an established love for characters, that return in CF3.  Note that CF1 was also planned as kind of a budget title...but obviously got nowhere in production.

As for Bonk's Quest(TTI's name), most of the pictures floating around on the net, are fakes.  Red made them originally as a joke, but then interest started buzzing(similar to how Bonk got started in the first place), & so they started developing it.  There are official pictures in an oldl EGM I have, probably Steve/Esteban has it already scanned.  The real pictures of the game.....don't look near as good as the old mockup/joke pictures unfortunately  Ofcoarse, even all of this could be wrong.  There's no real way to know for sure without going to the source, the people who actually worked on the game!

For me, all the unreleased games were equally disappointing.  I would have to say Dangerous Journeys just because TTI was finally starting to get some good US only titles out for the system.  Ports of any of the great PCE titles would have been welcome as well.  I would have probably ditched Bonk 3 SCD for Star Parodier/Spriggan/Drac X = pipe dream.

I remember back in the day reading about upcoming games and thinking the TTI (though they had their act together better than NEC-USA) was still missing the mark on what they snagged from the Japanese selection.

I had a discussion long ago about the upcoming Terraforming game.  My friend and I both agreed that what was probably recommended to TTI was Spriggan Mk. 2 Re Terraform Project.  Somehow wires got crossed and we ended up with Terraforming.  Not a bad game, but probably not the best choice.

TV Sports Baseball may have actually made it very far into development considering a former NEC employee had an EPROM of it.  I wasn't sure if he was ever able to get it working.  If you're out there malicedoom - any updates?

Dangerous Journeys is the only game that I knew of that was slated to be released but never was. I have the PCE version of Battle Lode Runner so I'm in the same boat as Vestcunt with regards to that. The following games were announced in the 1993 Club Duo Catalog (in addition to King of the Monster 2, Macross 2036, and Battle Load Runner, whic you already got):
Macross 2036SLG
Wizardry 1 & 2
World Heroes
(WD)

People on this forum have said the KotM2 and WH were finished and playable.

The Official TG-16 Game Encyclopedia previews an alternate version of Camp California.  Some guy has appeared here twice over the years flaunting pictures of it.

Let's not forget Strider for the Supergrafx.

Xymati and PC Gunjin should also be included - there were announced by an established developer and screenshots were released.  Xymati has been switched to the xboxlive and nothing has been heard regarding PC Gunjin for five years.

I don't know anything about them, but, for the sake of completeness, other folks have mentioned a PCE Batman platformer and a U.S. release of Cosmic Fantasy 1.

Finally, while they can hardly be considered games, The Official TG-16 Game Encyclopedia also lists the following educational "Discis Books":
The Tale of Peter Rabbit
Benjamin Bunny
Scary Poems for Rotten Kids
Cinderella
A Long Hard Day on the Ranch
Thomas' Snowsuit

I hadn't read that interview before.  It seems Mr. Marsh convinced NEC to abandon Dangerous Journeys and then TTI picked it up again a few years later.

ICOM was a Chicago-based company and Dave Marsh describes NEC as "just down the road" in his interview.  He also says the Addams Family license was still on the table.  Thus, the conference room they were sitting around was probably somewhere in Illinois and the meeting was prior to the Addams Family release in 1991.

TTI later announced that Dangerous Journeys would be released in April 93:  http://www.video-game-ephemera.com/image/014_a.jpg

(main page here:  http://www.video-game-ephemera.com/014.htm and PCEFX discussion here https://www.pcengine-fx.com/forums/index.php?topic=9768.0 )

When Dave Marsh talked to NEC about Dangerous Journeys it 1989-90 the country was at the height of its Dungeons and Dragons = Satanism hysteria.  The women who's son committed suicide had just published her book "The Devil's Web: Who Is Stalking Your Children For Satan?" and TSR had recently changed it's policy and stopped referencing devils and demons in its products.  Gary Gygax was by no means a Satanist and TTI was probably smart enough to realize the fact a couple years later, restarting the project.

I don't think there's any way it could've been Spriggan 2, there's lot's of dialogue in it, which means lot's of translating, even if they left out the voices.  Terraforming was probably either cheap, or free for them to bring over.  IIRC, Bonk 3 CD was given to them as a freebie.  Baseball had to be done, it just had to.  I've mentioned it before, but Game Dude even had a listing for a used copy of it at some time.  But, the guy I asked didn't know anything about it.  Might mean that some kind of eprom was sold to them at some time??

And I forgot to mention it, but, that Action RPG Adventure looking game, that was supposed to be 2 player, called Riftwar Saga.....I've always had a jones for that game.  Might've been terrible for all I know, but it looked(from the 2 screenshots I've ever seen) & sounded cool.

As for that alternate version of Camp California that someone talked about, I hope you don't mean me?  An old friend of mine, who's dad worked for Icom(& did the gfx for Ghost Manor, not to mention played the hero in that game!) had an old early demo of Camp California.  I'm sure I've mentioned that, but, all I know about it, is that it was incomplete, & only had the title screen music, I remember hearing it over the phone, but never saw it in person.

And as for World Heroes, & King of the Monsters 2, I swear that one of the Shirley Bros. told me they were done, but wouldn't release them because they were afraid TTI was going to release WH2 with the Arcade Card, but then ofcoarse didn't release KotM 2 because it REQUIRED the Arcade card, irony at it's best #-o

yeah the pce Batman isn't bad by any means it's just that there's already another game out there that's more or less the same on the pce (Doraemon) and on the TG16 (Cratermaze) so it would have been cooler if it had been a platformer especially being the only superhero game in the whole PCE/TG16 libaray

Yeah, I read through it.

Really though, it is reversed. Westerners were buying Japanese games, that were for all intents and purposes just as Japanese as they were before. It's just that there's so much more Western stuff out there specifically aimed at Westerners that the Japanese and Western markets have started to split significantly.

I only said it because this was what my friend and I believed back in the day.  With efforts like Beyond Shadowgate, it wouldn't have been unreasonable to think that they could have aimed higher.  Once we got Terraforming, my friend and I just looked at each other and asked "how did they pick this game?"  It's a great game, but free or not, it did little to expand the market of the Duo in the US.

Even a US Dracula X or Sapphire wouldn't have saved the system by that time, but it could have sent it off with a bang.  I suppose they could have released a US Virtual Cushion and Hi Leg Fantasy.  Take the Wii marketing scheme to a whole new level.
