Question about a laptop AC adaptor

I'm looking at a laptop on eBay where the seller states that I'd need a UK pin adaptor, because it's an American model.
Will the US adaptor really be ok stepping down 240 volts AC to ~20 DC?

It seems unlikely to me...

Depends, some adapters are multi voltage. This especially true of laptop adapters because people often bring them along when traveling.
