Im thinking of getting my snes modded for region switch and component but i have no idea how to do it if someone is an expert at it and knows which is the best snes model to get let me know and is willing to mod it.

Not sure if its ok to post it in this forum ill have it moved if it isn't.

Duo-r, turbokon, and apolloboy seem to be our resident "do it all" modders.  I'm sure that any of them could do this mod for you. I have had thesteve and duo-r do work for me. other possibilites are BlueBMW and keith courage as well. You really can't go wrong with any of them. Fire off a pm, if whoever you choose can't do the job, i'm sure they will direct you to who can.

thesteve already doing my turbo duo rx ill try the others as he doesnt do snes or hasnt messed with them/

The component mods quality for Snes isn't consistent. What I have seen of it is many people tend to do it their own way per trial and error for their own tv, and the results they get wont carry over to someone elses tv always. In other words, while their display may give the system a decent image, your tv may have issues with the signal, and it may have waviness or noise in the image. Its harder to tell if there are image issues if the person doing the mod is only using a LCD for testing, so whomever you have do the mod, request they test the component out on a couple of different CRT tvs before shipping the unit back to you.

That way if there are any issues present they stand a better chance of ironing them out. If you are using a lcd yourself for your snes, and your LCD already has a fine gamemode and can handle svideo fine, then I recommend just sticking to svideo, because you really wont notice a real difference between the two too well on a lcd.

I just recently learned that 1st generation SNES systems had an encoder chip that was outputting Component video all along. I haven't finished my mod, but I can tell you that the video quality is absolutely gorgeous on my 32" CRT! The issue is of course that since these systems output a 240p signal, many new LCD TVs will outright reject it from the Component inputs, enforcing a demand that it should be 480p - so you'd still be stuck with s-video or composite. But it's guaranteed to work on any CRT that has the YPbPr (Green/Blue/Red) RCA inputs for it!

I do have to update my findings about this mod, though. I might make a youtube video about it. Basically, it's best to add the basic transistor amp to each line (the 2n3904 from Keith's/thesteve's S-Video mod) and a 15 Ohm resistor to the Luma line; the Red and Blue were perfect after amplification in my case. Close to the color level of the system's S-Video output.

Anyway, you need a SNES model that was built from '90 to '93. Ones that look like this:

You say you want your SNES modded but then ask which is the best model to get, so which is it? You have one or are getting one? If you got the newer ones, yeah, you might be SOL as that S-ENC encoder chip was removed/changed. The Model 2 and the Junior don't have it - you'd need an expensive RGB to Component circuit board to output that signal. These models:

The SNES already outputs RGB so all you need is a RGB scart cable and a scart to component converter. If you haven't bought one yet, you can use the same converter for your other systems as well and most output natively from their av output already. Your TV must be able to support 240p from component though. A lot of flat screens don't so wont sync the image or wont display anything.
As far as the region mode goes, if you are just trying to play Japanese games all you need is to break two little tabs inside the cart slot with some needle nose pliers. It's incredibly simple. If you need a 50/60hz switch then yeah youl'l need a more complicated mod.

well my snes just died so thinking of getting a new one. My turbo duo rx is getting worked on and thesteve asked me to plug in the composite to the Y input on the component to see if it would show black and white graphics which it did. Would that mean my tv is capable of displaying 240p? And would that mean a scart to component converter would work?

Yup, that's your proof that it'll work! A 240p signal is being processed, so component video mods from your 16-bit systems will work with that TV. If your TV is a CRT there was no question that it would work, it's with the newer LCD TVs that there is a problem - they reject the signal if it's not at minimum a 480p one. Anyway, you're good.

About your SNES dying, if you send it to steve for repair (maybe cap replacement or power supply issues), I can give him the info on tapping the internal component video pins for a sweet mod that he could do for you while fixing it - if he's interested, that is. Only an option if your SNES is one of the early models that has the S-ENC chip and it's better than a RGB converter if available.

my tv is a lcd/led hd tv. 42 in panasonic. And my snes died 2 days ago i think the fuse went pewp as it wont power on. I was trying to bend the pins some a little bit better im not sure if the pins have anything to do with it powering on at all. But it was dieing anyways i was getting corrupted graphics in ff3 in the ocean with clean contacts and the vertical line was getting worse. So i bought a new one on amazon last night the guy said he tested it and said no vertical line but well see when i get it.

Ah, you're lucky then, it's a new big screen LCD type and 240p works on it. I burned out the fuse on my SNES as well actually, had to change it and for the hell of it, I did a full capacitor replacement using ceramic/tantalum caps. Everything worked out just fine.

8bitForLife

i dont have a soldering gun or any skills in it. Did your snes have vertical line problems before you changed all the caps and did it fix it after?

It didn't have these line problems that people refer to before, but steve told me that the use of quality capacitors can eliminate stuff like that in the video and the noise/hum in the audio (very apparent in my TurboExpress with new, but cheap aluminum caps). It could be that the SNES units that have this vertical line problem is due to the capacitors being old (20+ years now for 1st generation systems) and a recap would help.

8bitForLife

not sure who to send my snes too thesteve doesnt work on them he said and cant get apollo to respond to a pm i sent him so meh.

Thesteve did my Duo mod and I love it. I also got a Turbo Express modded by BlueBMW that I purchased off here and that's also perfect so I highly recommend those 2 guys.

Yes I have done this same mod t my Snes to play imports and it works great. I've also heard you can use a Game Genie to play imports but I've never tried that before.

I would do it, but all of my stuff is scattered all over the place. It does not take a lot of money ( -120 ), to get the tools or do the job, What is the job?
