RUN+Select = Soft Reset (For what reason?)

Hey Everyone,

I've seen some PC-Engine Duo users do RUN+Select to reset back to the bios menu before powering down or changing games. What purpose does this serve? Is it bad for you to just change games on the fly or power the unit off immediately in some way I'm not aware of?

LostFlunky

Well with a CD game, you wouldn't get it to boot unless you reset... I do that when changing CD games.  No real reason to power off at all when changing a CD.

Maybe there is some concern about corrupting the onboard save-files?

RegalSin

The original Gameboy also has this feature built into, maybe you could ask Gunpei Yokoi the answer to that question. So far, as I know, the PCE along with the gameboy, does not sport any reset button whatsoever.

The SMS. NES. Genesis, SNES, has a reset. It is a real pain in the arse,
to get up every god damn time, just to reset a game. Why? Because some of us, unlike in Japan, do not have their consoles right next to them, on the floor. However the gameboy also have this feature, and some SNES games, too.

Flatfact......it is a in game reset. Think of it, like with an emulator.
Some games have the reset feature turned off ( because to my knowledge, the feature is on always, and you must disable it, on a programmer level . ) .

Turning the machine on and off can damage it.

Using the built in reset feature, can damage the system, or even saves?

So basically if the feature is not built into it, tuff cookies. Otherwise be blessed to have something that is always switched on.

No reason for it really, People do it to err on the side of cuation should something go wrong.  I do both, mostly becuase I can.  resetting is an easy way to get what's on the screen off.

BT: Look at how the fake SFII' carts instantly sold out and were immediately listed on eBay before the flippers even took possession. Look at Nintendo's overpriced bricks. Look at the typical forum discussions elsewhere. You can't tell most retro gamers anything!

I do it to stop the spinning disc and deactivate the lens before I open the lid. My main concern is that a spinning disc can bounce or scuff when the lid is suddenly opened. If nothing else, it reduces the chance of a fumble.
I'm a cunt, always was. Topic Adjourned.

The proper way to shut off the system from a cd game is to reset to bios. It's even in some of the manuals.  I like the soft reset feature and wish all systems had it. I'm sure everyone here has accidentally reset there game though at intense gaming moment.

Trenton_net

Well, I know the manuals say to do a soft-reset to bios before shutting down, but I was wondering if there was a more technical reason for doing so. The best answer I can think of is to dis-engage the CD lens and spin down?

To be different from other consoles?  This's only my second cd based console so I still turn it off when changing games out of habit.

I like it too, but I wish they had made it a little bit more difficult to execute. f.e. pressing run + sel for 2 sec. or twice in a row etc.

It happened uncountable times, that I had reset a game when I was in a rage by pressing sun + sel accidentally or intuitively.

Well, modern motherboards are more sensitive than older ones, but one reason as to why the PS3 lost its big on/off-button in the back while going "slim", has to do with the motherboard always staying warm. A motherboard that goes from warm to cold to warm to cold will develop problems over time. Im uncertain how much of a problem this is for older systems though. I could also see the logic in soft-reset to prevent possible corruption to save games, or simple spinning cd fumbling etc.. My 3DO FZ-10 doesnt have this feature, as far as im aware, and i always wait for the game disc to stop spinning after opening the lid (which resets the consol when you push it back down, without turning it off mechanically).

I always thought the select+run reset was b/c the console had no dedicated reset button.

I remember at least one game that you had to hold select+run for 3 seconds to initiate a reset, but I can't remember the title...maybe Ys 4 or maybe a shooter...anyone?

Last time me and a friend were playing Pomping World, he died before me, then managed to reset trying to get more credits.  Never mind...

This is just one if the many things that the PCE pioneered that people take for granted now. The Sega-CD, Saturn and Dreamcast also have control based resets. Imagine how today's generation would react if you took away the 360/PS3 button from their pads?
Justin the Not-So-Cheery Black/Hack/CrackTiger helped Joshua Jackass, Andrew/Arkhan Dildovich and the DildoPhiles destroy 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together! Both times he blamed the Aarons and their staff in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged/destructive/doxxing toxic turbo troll gang which he covers up for under the "community" euphemism!

QUESTION: Why ask why?

ANSWER: It is terribly convenient to have a soft reset available at your fingertips.

HuCARDS and CD's alike benefit from it (to change settings, manage memory back-up save states, etc. etc.)

I would be annoyed if I had to hit a button on the actual console every time I re-started a game (or swapped a CD).

A lot of games will reset if you hold ABC and press Start.

I always soft reset before powering down a CD game.

But seriously, they should have made it a more complicated button combination. I've never gotten very far in a 5-player session of Dungeon Explorer with friends because, inevitably, someone always ends up resetting the system when you have yourself and up to 4 other people playing who aren't accustomed to the turbo.

Do we have a running list of CD/SCD games that Do Not reset by doing the mentioned Sel+Run technique? :-k

Bonk III CD goes to the titles screen rather than the System Card menu.
