Hey everyone.

My Turbo Duo appears to be getting worse and worse... ::sigh:: but lets see if I can't get some help and bring my buddy back to life.

What it does currently is play All my HU cards just fine, when I put a game CD in, it will play the game up until there's some Redbook audio then it won't load anything (no image, no audio, just spins, gives up, click, spins, gives up, click. over and over)

Example if I put Ys I & II in it loads, plays the intro screen, then as soon as it fades to black to go to the next scene that has audio, nothing happens.

On Ys III I get nothing at all since that game starts with audio. IF I load this game up and press the eject button on the lid, the game will un-hang and show video (just no audio)

These are Retail CD's (not burned copies) and are spotless

Things I've done so far. So far I've replaced the caps in the unit, greased up the gears and rods, and even tried replacing the laser with a new HOP-M3 (either with the new or original laser the issues remains the same)
On the replacement laser I attempted to twist the dial from one end to the other, barely turning the dial at all each attempt.
Also both the white and red cables that attach the lens to the main board have been reseated and attached firmly all the way, no loose connections

What else can I try? what should I look at?

Thanks everyone!!! I hope this can be resolved. ] ]

Try adjusting the pots on the motherboard that are next to the disc drive, there's a handy adjustment guide on this board you can use, although I never had much luck with that to begin with. You're not really supposed to adjust the pot on the laser itself, just the ones on the motherboard.

I did find this ... https://www.pcengine-fx.com/forums/index.php?topic=8926.0 so far by adjusting the VR103 ever so slightly I got the game "Loom" to go further than before, it plays! just no sound at all... bummer, still no improvement with Ys 1-3

try VR102. 101,104, and 105 almost never need adjustment so I would leave those alone. Also, might not hurt to re-grease the rails for the CD lens or just swap them around if you don't have any grease on hand. Any audio tracks near the outside of a CD will stop working when the rails are not grease or lubed enough.

I've been playing with the pots and matching the ohms as best I can from the previous link, things have gotten better, just not perfect just yet. I can now get Loom and some other games working/playing just choppy audio at times. Still no improvement from Ys I II III
It's getting there just more patience and work

the audio is choppy? Does it cut in and out really fast kindof like a guitar tremelo? If so try pot 105. Also, this is sometimes a sign of a lens dying or bad caps on the CD portion of the board.

If you haven't replaced the caps yet on your Duo, I'd suggest doing it now before the caps can cause further damage to the motherboard.
