I guess videogame enthusiasts (gamers?) have a (perhaps undeserved stereotype) reputation for being couch potatoes.  Clearly that's untrue, as I've seen/read from many of you about what you get up to while not gaming.

Me, I'm surprisingly slim considering my lack of cardio (all I ever used to do was skate, now it's mainly frisbee in the summer).  But if anything I've started gradually getting into exercise, generally freeweights and push-ups/pull-ups at home.  I'm actually surprised at how little effort it's taken to see an improvement.  Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to win any awards, but I'm happy with the way it's going.

the next thing I'm going to try and do is get more cardio in.  There's running, which I'm kind of dreading - I'm a smoker, so I'll probably get knackered quickly.  Alternatively, I wait for summer again and start with the frisbee, a bit of basketball, or maybe tennis.

What about you guys?  Do any exercise?  I bet some of you do martial arts (actually, that's another possibility, but I hate getting punched ;/)

Swimming is great exercise.  I might actually do some if I can pull off not being incredibly puny and white during the summer.  And I forgot about Fridays.  Dancing must be great cardio!

Too lazy (and genuinely unwilling) to do proper exercise, mostly because it's boring. Not really comfortable around the kind of people my mind believes residents in these so called "training centers" and less pleasant memories from the P.E. lessons in school starts roaring their heads.

That being said. I'm not opposed to moving, or alternatively shaking, mah "bodyeh". Quite like to move around, jump around, and least for shorter distances, run around.
That's why personally, a good obstacle course or similar always wins over a straight game of for example soccer, or another "normal", "serious" and "proper" sport exercise.
I want to have fun while moving and I dread the day when I actually have to sign up for a gym card.

I usually do 3 or 4 sit ups in the morning.  Then I turn off my alarm clock and get out of bed. One can only hit the snooze button so many times. :)

I've actually lost over 20 lbs since the Summer, but I blame that more on the roller-coaster of stress I've been riding during that time.  Stress=loss of appetite to me. However I have gotten into rowing a little boat around our neighborhood lake with my 4 yr old lately.  And a fair amount of drumming practice, so maybe those help out a little.

And one cannot stress enough the importance of beer curls.

Yeah, good point.  Something like paintball would be a good combo, if a little expensive to be a regular thing.  I used to get a good workout from laser tag, even though you're not supposed to run >__>.

I too am disinclined to go to a gym, because
a) There are bound to be people in there who totally show you up
b) It costs fucking loads
c) I'm not really the kind of person who wants to subject themselves to ... I dunno, being judged I guess
d) You can do most of the same things in the privacy of your own home for a total of $30.  $4000 for a treadmill?  Try running.

My  one caveat is, if I can get over myself, there are an abundance of hotties going in and out of my local gym.  That, and a few machines like cable pulls are the only reasons I'd EVER contemplate joining a gym.

Sorry to hear that man.  Mind you, considering the seemingly limitless amount of energy kids have, maybe it will be cardio enough running around after the little un'?  And you could always get a puppy for double the stress.

Oh yeah, probably real fun. But, yeah, too expensive and most likely cumbersome for a regular workout.
Tho', when I was younger, me and a few pals used to have this totally frantic free for all deathmatch using soft airguns. It's kinda like football except that you use a disc. You can't run with the disc, you can only pivot in place so you are constantly passing the disc to other teammates. It doesn't sound like it, but there's a lot of running involved. Possession changes to the other team if they intercept the disc or you make an unsuccesful pass.

I hit the gym once or twice a week, if the little spare time let me go. 70% free weight and few machines.

at home I have my two dumbells (atm each max. 50lbs) and a camp bench (lol).
with these I can do most of the basic stuff at home as well.

have also few grippers (up to 225lbs), and some other lil equip.

it helps me a lot to not become a fat farter towards my forties.

These things are awesome:
(not me. Also, hit mute)

Cost 1000 yen, and they hit muscles you didn't even know you had. When I started, I couldn't do a single rep, and now I can do 50 in a row. I can almost do one on my feet rather than my knees, but that is fucking hard.

I do push-ups, sit-ups and all kinds of stuff with two adjustable dumbbells. I walk all over the place as part of my job, and I watch my calorie intake. As Kevin Spacey said in American Beauty, I want to look good naked.

Tatsujin

lol, have that too.

I think it is a great and effecient tool (one of the very few cheap ones that actually pays out), but it hurts my back too much. So I can't do much reps. very great for the abdominal muscle(s).

I do free weights, 6 days a week:

Day 1: Chest
Day 2: Biceps
Day 3 : Legs & Back
Day 4 : Chest
Day 5 Biceps
Day 6: Triceps & Shoulders

I usually workout at the gym at work during my lunch break, then come home and do some more + an ab routine. I always take whey supplements and stack with carbs and BCAAs after working out

I've thought about joining a gym, since they usually have alot more equipment than my gym at work or what I have at home. Just haven't been able to afford it yet with my 2nd kid on the way. Maybe someday...

I do a sort of an augmented WiiFit routine on weekdays (about a little over an hour 5 times a week in the morning).
- 20+ minutes of strength stuff (do the harder exercises and use dumbbells instead of wiimote, 2 minute plank, push up and side planks, etc)
- 20 minute free run (use an elliptical machine on highest setting instead of running in place).
- 20 minute of yoga and cool down.

Been doing it pretty consistently for a couple of years.  I've always been skinny, but I was looking at some vacation pictures a couple of years ago and I noticed that I was developing a gut.  I've managed to get quite toned and slowly lost around 20 kilos in two years (I also made slight adjustments to my eating habits.)  I didn't bulk up, wasn't looking to, I still look skinny but the flabbiness is gone.*

*Well, I still have a tiny bit of a spare tire...  It's sort of like a semi-5-pack thing going on. :P

Thanks, now I have something to call mine. I think it's just genetic that my body likes to disproportionately store some fat there. I've gotten rid of it before, but by then I was so skinny that my face looked like I'd just come out of a concentration camp.

What would one of these threads be without some workout advice?

Seriously, if it hurts your back at all, you're probably just not using the right form. I've experienced the same thing, and I'd guess you're letting your lower spine take your weight as you move toward the floor. Don't worry about touching your hips to the ground, but rather keep your whole lower back arched up like a scared cat. Flex your abs, and make them take the weight. I know that if I take care to do that, I can do this exercise even when I have a sore back and not aggravate it at all.

Quote from: Tatsujin on 01/26/2013, 01:33 AMFor those who do teh weight training, what are your fav. exercises for which muscle parts? :)
Here's what I'm doing in my current routine:

Day 1: Chest
- Flat bench (straight bar)
- Incline bench (dumbells)
- Decline bench (straight bar)
- Incline flyes (dumbells)

Day 2: Biceps
- Hammer curls
- Curl bar
- Seated dumbell curls
- Preacher curls

Day 3: Legs and Back
- Squats
- Lat pulls
- Calf raises
- Seated rows
- Leg curls
- Lat curls

Day 4: Chest (all with dumbells)
- Flat bench
- Incline bench
- Decline bench
- Flat bench flyes

Day 5: Biceps
- Dumbell curls
- Straight bar curls
- Hammer curls
- Preacher curls
- Cable curls

Day 6: Triceps & Shoulders
- Reverse military press
- Front raises
- Seated tricep extension
- Shoudler shrugs
- Tricep kickbacks
- Side lateral raises

I do 3 sets of each exercise... starting with lighter weight first and increasing the weight with each following set. I try for 10 reps in the first set, 8 reps for the second, and 6 reps for the third. If I can do more than 10/8/6 reps with each exercise, then I increase the weight for each set.

At the end of each routine, I finish with some ab exercises. I start with flat planks, then side planks, then elevate my feet and do more flat planking. On my "day off", I also workout my abs, this time adding several sets of crunches with a 10lb plate behind my head, then several sets of legs lifts, and finish with the plank routine I usually do on days 1 - 6.
