Yes jibba i'm saving you time for this shameless plug
Awesome, been looking forward to this since it was mentioned on retro blast! :D On that note, while I do dig the Vive cast, I hope you guys get back together and do some more retro blast episodes in the future.
Ever listen to the retrogamesquad podcast ? Jibba was a guest on that awhile ago still it's a shame to that podcast will end by the fall.

Thanks!  It was kind of weird being on his show, because I don't think that there's a lot of overlap in our audiences, but I like his channel a lot so it was awesome to be invited over.

Quote from: ccovellThanks for the props in the video!
No dude, thank you for taking the time to re-scan those pages for me.  That was above and beyond.

I just saw your SNES video. Everytime somebody just slams his F-Zero car on to the racetrack after jumping, it makes my skin crawl.

Pro-tip: Try the up/down buttons next time and watch the jump length and car's speed, and how it affects the landing.

Good episode by the way, if a bit lengthy. I've got that Otaku documentation on DVD, I'm pleased you're referring to it.

CGQuarterly

Yeah I noticed that you could soften your landing, but I don't think it makes that big of a difference.  Due to the rubber band AI that I referred to, there's not much point in doing little things like that to shave a few tenths off of your lap time.  And yeah that Otaku documentary was cool.  At least the video game parts.  Some of the other stuff was a bit weird.  Sorry if you thought the vid was too long.  31+ mins is a lot for a YT vid, but for the SNES anything less would be uncivilized.

ClodBusted

Don't worry, it's not that much about the actual length. It's more about how to make it exciting for the viewer. I'm no expert on video editing by any means, but I think Gamesack got it nailed with their style of narration, transition from section to section (game to game), and the short break in the middle. They could make me watch videos that last hours.

You're doing a pretty good job. Compare this to other videos, were I tend to get bored or even doze off after 10 minutes since the narration and style just can't bring it on to grab my attention span for any longer.

esteban

I think this SNES video helps folks who didn't live through NES-->16-bit era understand the context (as well as the launch titles).

I would not have shortened it. 30 minutes is great. If they stopped it early, they were not really interested, anyway.

I remember when my brother's friend brought SNES over and plugged it into the TV...it was magical (chase).

Of course, I felt that way about all the consoles the first time I played them.

Ha :)

Weren't Sim City and Gradius 3 also launch titles?

Quote from: Joe Redifer on 07/23/2016, 06:38 PMWeren't Sim City and Gradius 3 also launch titles?
They were, but Super Gradius III is supposed to have been release shortly before the SNES.

My friend and I bought Dragon Slayer and Shapeshifter months before the TurboDuo and System 3.0 card came out. Too bad Dragon Slayer didn't have the same interactive Omake mode for the system card warning that the PCE version does.
Justin the Not-So-Cheery Black/Hack/CrackTiger helped Joshua Jackass, Andrew/Arkhan Dildovich and the DildoPhiles destroy 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together! Both times he blamed the Aarons and their staff in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged/destructive/doxxing toxic turbo troll gang which he covers up for under the "community" euphemism!

While I agree that Game Sack's style is great, CGR comes with a totally different, documentar-ish vibe, and I completely disagree with you that the video was too long. It's well paced, informative, while still relaying a great deal of enthusiasm for the topic at hand.

I don't know Jibbajaba, besides him seemingly being a bit of a douche in these boards, but his videos are getting better and better with each iteration, and I would personally want him to continue with his current style, instead of crossing over to the more casual approach that shows like GS bring to the table.

I'm really not sure.  The problem is that there is a small percentage of my subs that really enjoy them, so I would hate to stop doing them and let some people down, but there are other people who see them as filler.  The Game Fan vid has been up for over 4 months and has about 4,500 views, while the SNES launch vid has been up for a little over 2 days and has over 16k already.  And the way I did the Game Fan video made it a lot of work, because I did that whole intro deal and then added in all of that gameplay footage.  So that's time that I could be spending making one of my other videos.  Someone wants to mail me some UK mags, so if that ends up happening then I might do one of those.

I've experimented with different types of videos over the years, but I think that at this point it's pretty clear to me what my channel is "about".  That's why I turned the Game Fan vid into a brief historical retrospective with a read-through attached.

Quote from: Joe Redifer on 07/23/2016, 06:38 PMWeren't Sim City and Gradius 3 also launch titles?
Most places you look on the web will say that they were launch titles, but they actually came out the following week.  If you bought your SNES on day 1, then it was just the three games that I covered.  As Black Tiger mentioned, there is this belief that Gradius III (or even both Gradius III and SimCity) were on store shelves before the console itself arrived, but I've never read anything to back that up.

Quote from: nopepper on 07/23/2016, 07:20 PMWhile I agree that Game Sack's style is great, CGR comes with a totally different, documentar-ish vibe, and I completely disagree with you that the video was too long. I'm kind of replying to ClodBusted and you, here.  One style isn't any better than the other, but as nopepper rightly observed, the shows have a different flow.  I think that the Sack's "quick hits" style of going through the games is probably more conducive to keeping the audience tuned-in.   Watch time and viewer retention are important metrics on YouTube, and when YT is your livelihood you have to pay attention to that stuff.  They have developed a very successful and consistent formula.

I on the other hand pay very little attention to that stuff because YT is not, and never will be my job.  That's not any kind of swipe at people for whom it is a job, but just a statement of fact.  I therefore don't really have to care about making my videos watchable to large swaths of people, and have the creative freedom to just do whatever I think is cool for any given video.  Yes my channel is monetized, but I have actually never linked a bank account to my YouTube deal, meaning that every cent that the channel has ever earned is just sitting in an AdSense account.

To be fair, I'm a much bigger douche on the Neo-Geo forums.  I appreciate you saying that I am getting better, as that's certainly my goal.  Continuing to refine my current style is absolutely the game plan.

Pretty good "fan commercial" essentially for a flashcart. That you got 5,800 views already suggests a healthy established channel, I didn't think your viewership had grown that large.

I am curious as to how much is sitting there. Something tells me you never look.

Never know. Could be used for some big purches of a game/item you wouldn't normally spend the money on.

I like that your show is just that. Your show. You don't feel the need to pander to a larger general audience to make it more profitable.

Makes me feel a little bad for other youtubers where their show and to a larger extent their personas have to be marketable and profitable.

Hahah, that's a horrible screen cap!  "Close your eyes and open your mouth..."  That's a Pioneer SX-828 under the TV.  Receiver/Amp from the 70's.  I've had it for about 5 years but just brought it up to CGQ-HQ recently because the receiver that I was using sucks.

Well, things have changed a bit since I posted that.  It's kind of funny because it seems like YouTube money is this taboo subject that you aren't supposed to talk about, but whatever.

After I posted the SNES launch video, the channel started bringing in a lot more money.  That video got a LOT of views, and my "baseline" daly viewership also went up a lot (and therefore so did ad revenue).  You're right that I didn't really pay attention to the balance in that account, but when you have a YouTube channel, it displays your estimated revenue for the last 28 days right on the dashboard, so I could see that more money had to be accumulating.  I figured it was dumb to leave it in an AdSense account, so I went to the bank and opened up a business checking account and linked it to my AdSense account.

I'm going to talk about it in the next CGQ&A, but I ended up using a pretty big chunk of the money to buy a new camera for shooting the show.  I never thought that the channel would make enough money that I would actually be able to reinvest it in the show, so that was pretty exciting.  I have also purchased some other things for the show (like games and accessories that I need for upcoming videos).  My only personal rule is that the money should just always be used for that, and not for me to just buy stuff for myself because there isn't *that* much.  Just enough that if I need something for the show then I can just go ahead and buy it and not worry about it.  For example, right now I am shopping around for a new microphone stand.  I have spent quite a lot of my personal money on the show over the years, so it's nice to no longer have to do that.  I'm only going to bring it up on an episode of CGQ&A because I am honestly really grateful and humbled to be in that position, and just want to say "thanks" to the people who've stuck with the show.

I won't go so far as to say that I feel bad for people who make their living on YouTube, but I am glad that I don't have to.  I can just make what I want, when I want and not worry about it.  I don't select topics for the show based on what I think will get more clicks, and I don't have to do awkward paid content.  People e-mail me wanting to sponsor the show, or to pay me to review their products and I generally don't do it because I don't want to feel like a sell-out.  I accept Everdrives from Krikzz because I was already promoting his products when I was buying them with my own money, and I really do think that they're awesome.  If someone else that makes stuff that I already use (and therefore think is awesome) wanted to sponsor the show (like Elgato or something), then that would probably be fine.  But I get requests from people making homebrew games that look terrible, and there is no way that I am going to tell my audience that they should spend money on something that I wouldn't personally buy.

Thanks, Clod.  Although I got a few negative comments (which is unavoidable), overall this episode was well-received by my subs.  Still remains to be seen how it does with the YouTube crowd at large, but we probably won't see that until next week.

I didn't comment on the video, but I will say I found the South American segment most unpleasing. The guy was kinda hard to understand, and there is something about his cadence and delivery that was not pleasing to my ears. I couldn't finish the segment.

I had just a little trouble understanding him, and I'm not even a native English speaker. Yeah, the accent was a little tough, optional captions would be a nice option.

By the way, do you guys try automatically generated captions from time to time? They can still be hilarious, even if YouTube got better with English. On Japanese videos, the auto captions are still utter nonsense.

There are captions.  I uploaded them based directly off of the show's script.

This was a very informative video, jibbers. Normally I'll play your videos when I want to take in some info until I am put to sleep by your silky-smooth monotone voice. It's like,.. TV static, or sleeping with a fan on or some other white noise. :P

I thought the segment of the Master System in Brazil was the most interesting part of this video and was always fascinated with how popular the system was in that region. His accent was strong but I could follow along for the most part. I think what was difficult for some was the way he was using inflections in speech that would be commonly heard in Portuguese, making it difficult for some to understand.
