So I have an Ouya and gotta say I love this little system. For anyone who doesn't know about it, all games HAVE to offer a free version, and most are full games with options to donate!

It's not the most powerful system out there, and runs on android os so I don't compare it to the likes of ps3/xbox and such, but damn, there's all kinds of indie retro style games on it.

And there's emulators for most systems to play your retros as well.

Anybody else have it? What games do you like or what apps have you loaded? Let's talk Ouya, ooooyea
Nothin beats the real thing.

jtucci31

I've heard mixed things about the system, but how is the controller? It looks...interesting.

Gogan

I find it to be fairly comfortable. It's powered by AA battery, which I  had since summer and haven't replaced yet. They altered the buttons a bit since launch as a lot of ppl were complaining they were getting stuck under the casing. I've had no such problem. Controls pretty responsive as well.  Put it this way, you can play Image Fight pretty well on it.
Nothin beats the real thing.

DragonmasterDan

I've got one, it's a good media player. I use VLC, Netflix, CrunchyRoll, on it quite a bit.

bob

is there a TG/PCE emu for it?

Gogan

Quote from: galam on 03/10/2014, 09:48 AMis there a TG/PCE emu for it?
Yessir, I think it's called literally PCE EMU. I loaded up a USB stick, stuck it in the port, pointed to the directory. It emulates pretty damn well. I'm not expert on emulation tho. The controller I think is setup for I and II with turbo switches up and down. So far as I can tell.

And the thing is portable as hell being so tiny.
Nothin beats the real thing.

bob

my local target is clearing these out for $50...now I may need to think about it.

Gogan

Dang, I gotta check that out, I need a second controller

IMO for a retro/classic dude , I think it's a no brainer esp at $50

I had a GameStick for one day. What a garbage system. Horrid, bizarre controller, with the MOST SENSITIVE sticks of all time.

nevar forget 2013 - 1014
Yeah, never forget to not buy kickstarter trash based on a flimsy at best "all games required free2play" marketing scheme. You just end up with initially a lot of people buying the possibly poorly designed hardware, and everyone expecting to get a ton of free games, with no plans to actually buy anything.

Oh yeah, and there is always this tasty bit of intrigue involved with the thing:

"In July 2013, Ouya announced the "Free the Games Fund", a scheme to help fund developers, where Ouya would match any Kickstarter if a minimum target of $50,000 was reached, and provided the game remains Ouya exclusive for six months.[24] Suspicions were raised concerning the first two games to reach the target. Commentators noticed the small number of backers each pledging a high value amount, the large number of those who had never backed a project before, as well as the use of duplicate names and avatars that included those of celebrities.[48] This led some to suggest that the projects were artificially inflating their project's backing in order to receive extra money from Ouya. In addition, one project had a backer whose identity appeared to be taken from that of a missing persons case.[48]

Nevertheless, Ouya rejected any suspicion regarding the backing of the projects, and planned to continue with providing funding.[48][49] In September 2013, funding for one of the games that had been fully funded, Elementary, My Dear Holmes was suspended by Kickstarter.[50] The developers of the other funded game, Gridiron Thunder, threatened litigation against a commenter on the Kickstarter page,[50] and further dismissed concerns that they would have no rights to official NFL branding, a license currently held by Electronic Arts.[51] In the same month, another project caused controversy by openly stating that a relative of one developer had provided substantial additional backing in order to have the project qualify for money from the Free the Games fund.[52] The project was removed by Ouya from the Free the Games fund, resulting in the developers removing the project from Kickstarter.[52]

On September 18, 2013, Ouya modified the exclusivity clause of the fund. Developers will still no longer be able to release their software on mobile devices, video game consoles, and set-top boxes during the 6-month exclusivity period, but they will be allowed to release on other personal computer systems, such as Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux, during that time."

After reading this I went looking at a local store-

At first glance I was kind of excited, but soon realized the $49.99 sticker was JUST for extra controllers...

The $99 price tag is for the consoles. I asked if this was going to go on clearance, but the unhelpful store clerk just said she hadn't heard if it was.

I'm still kind of interested, but ONLY for a bargain.

It's small, has a lot of emulators and makes a nice multi-media box. At 50.00 it's a steal.

I am kind of disappointed that we won't see a generation 2 with better hardware. While I know many more microconsoles will come out in the future the small form factor of Ouya, combined with the nice interface actually had me quite excited about the future for the brand.

I do know the Mad Catz MOJO and perhaps other devices will be using Ouya software in the future.

Well, after chatt'n with Dragonmaster Dan I decided to track down a guy on CL and pick one up.

$60 just bare console, all hookups and one controller.  I'll probably catch some free time to try it out.  Just reading about some of the games that are sound pretty good I made a queue of games to try:
heroes of Loot
Towerfall (I've actually played this and quite enjoyed it!)
Dubwars
Ravensword
SKH Resurrection

Any others that I should look for?

I understand the need for emulators, but before I just turn this into an emu box, I'd like to give some of the current product a fair shake.  :)

Dub wars is fun for bout a minute. Cool idea tho.

I like
No Brakes! Valet
FF3
Mystery Castle
Super Grid Run
Cube and Creature
Sven
Polarity

I'll fire it up later and give ya a few more

Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of crap to sift thru, but some gems to be had for sure tho

A few more worth a spin

Muffin Knight
SHAARK!
Universe Alpha
HexMiner
Pinball Arcade (this is out on multiple platforms)
Pizza Boy
Fist of Awesome ( for some lol)
Ascent of Kings
Chrono Blade
Nub
Nothin beats the real thing.

I bought Final Fantasy III and Sonic CD on it. Final Fantasy III is the 3D remake, and Sonic CD has the Japanese music on it. Two games I already own other versions of, but well worth the money (Final Fantasy was on sale when I bought it though, not sure the regular price).

I have one it's a cheap workable emu box, worth 100 bones I guess...

HercTNT

You can buy a dual core android tv stick and Ipega blue tooth controller for roughly $60 brand new and do the same thing as the ouya. I have this very setup going at my house and get any game i want from the google play store. Mikes right, the Ouya is a cheap piece junk.

JoshTurboTrollX

6 days later and I'm really happy we picked it up.

My favorite Ouya games at this point are
Hero of Many ($3.99)
and
Ultionus
The Emulation capabilities are a HUGE step up from what I was using with the Xbox. Recognizing Wii and PS3 controllers just by syncing!  XBMC and it's plugins are totally fantastic.  I'm very happy with the $60 I dropped on this even if it is just a mild distraction.  :)

The Ouya is quad core and a bit more powerful than the 50-60 TV sticks. You can also connect USB devices to it, I'd rather have the Ouya at the same price point.

It's not "dead". It's more of a situation where they're shifting their focus to selling Ouya as a platform rather than continuing the hardware line. The original unit is still in manufacture, it's just unlikely that the plans for an annual new Ouya with gradual hardware improvements will come to fruition.

Current website updates have new releases slated for May of 2015, so I guess we can expect support for at least another year.

Also, I got it off Craigslist.  If you're interested I found another one locally for $65 +tax at a pawn shop.  I could snag it and send it to ya.

People are quite silly for thinking that only $8.5 million can fund a good console, albeit one with a severe lack of quality control. All the new consoles these days cost hundreds of millions, even for marketing.

The boxes you link to have a bit more RAM and are larger with ports and what not. I was reffering to the smaller stick models that show up on amazon and what not that were under 60.00.

Anyway, those boxes do look nice too for multimedia purposes.

I know what you were referring to. The device i linked was an example of a quad core since you were looking for apples to apples. My tv stick has usb as I stated.  Android games relay way more heavily on gpu than cpu. I have a quad core mobile device called the Iben L1. Its cpu ony runs at 1.1ghz. However, it has an 8 core powervr Gpu. I can run anything the ouya can. That quad core box i linked can run anything the ouya can. Especially with 2gb of ram. Which, is double the amount of ram btw. Thats more than abit :)

The Ouya was hyped all to hell because of its premise and its popularity on Kickstarter.  It seemed like it would be the ultimate indie console. They just did a whole ton of shit wrong, from its design to making nice with devs. I wisely kept my distance to see how it would all turn out and now I can honestly say that I am glad I did.

Just for yucks n' grins I played around with the Ouya tonight (after playing through Sonic CD (today's free ap of the day on Amazon app store) ) and discovered a couple little game demos that I found pretty interesting.  One that was absolutely stellar (seriously!) is this game called 'Read Only Memories' which at the moment is exclusive to the Ouya for a limited time.  I believe it'll be on PC/Mac/Linux and Ouya once it's available cross platform.
Anyway, the game really packs a TON of character.  It's a mix of a few really classy point n' click SKUMM games and has a more comical side feeling of games like Snatcher and Rise of the Dragon.  I'm really digging it, and wanted to share.  :)

I have seen Target and Amazon have some sales close to what I have wanted, I honestly see clearance a reality sooner than later.

I will give these guys credit, the money they raised is really small in the world of launching a new electronic product, so even getting anything out that is carrier at major retailers is impressive.
