What (if anything) would bring success to the Wii U?

Just throwing this thought out there. I happen to enjoy my Wii U. I think of it as a diamond in the rough.

I don't think they could lure back the third parties. It's too late for that. Also, the tablet controller isn't going to win the masses over with its innovation. It would have done that already.

They seem stagnant. Relying so heavily on the next Mariokart, the next Smash Bros, the next Zelda. There are few interesting things in the works, but it feels like they are just going through the motions for the most part.

I was thinking about this and it is a crazy thought I know, but what if Nintendo bought Sega/Sammy with all of Sega's franchise games? Reboot some of the classics. Dig into Nintendo vaults for games they have seemed to forget about. Do cross overs other than Sonic. Bring a stronger First party to the table to create some gems to draw more people in.

Buying Sega would be great publicity. Granted I don't know the state of Sega's design studios and what rights they have retained, if they would sell, or if Nintendo has that kind of capitol, but it's a interesting thought.

Maybe Nintendo could buy Hudson along with Sega. Get the machine going and really turn out some quality reboot/remake/new titles. I think that if the Wii U is to last anymore that another year or 2 they will really need to generate some helpful publicity and push out some consistent and more frequent quality first party titles.

I wouldn't be surprised to see them come out with a cheaper, stripped down version of the console to generate sales.  Basically, axe the tablet from the package.
Unless some third parties found ways to make "spin-off" games of popular franchises that fit the U, Nintendo will need to rely on first party franchises.  The whole thing was a misstep to release essentially another version of the Wii when the original Wii's popularity/sales were in a tale-spin.  It's almost like they tried to follow what they did with the DS line.  Incremental update to what's already out there.  Even better, they should have made the tablet it's own stand alone, take-anywhere game device that didn't have to be tethered to the machine. (figuratively speaking)

I think what they're doing now is a step in the right direction. Don't know if it will "save" it though. I think they should have waited until they had a few more solid titles like the ones they've released recently before they put the system on shelves. Best thing they've done lately was have a free downloadable game included with Mario Kart 8. Probably pushed a few people to get one.

It needs a price cut and/or a cheaper model without the pad (make iOS and Android apps to replace the functionality), and it needs more games.  Nintendo has the cash reserves - they can hold on to it and slowly lose it or they can spend it to buy up some IP.

- Can they get rid of the tablet controller? Do the pre-existing games that utilize it become unplayable? They would definetly need to be releasing a bigger stream of quality titles if they did this, because the system would have no way to differenciate itself from other last gen systems besides the first party titles. Not that the controller drew a crowd, but at least it was a line in the sand for it's uniqueness (is that word?).

- Someone suggested it is doing fine. I would agree that the games that are good are worth the ride, but to the casual video game player, do they generate enough excitement to buy the system? Plus, as far as I know the sales outside of the first party titles are not great. So if there is only one Nintendo developed game every 5 to 6 months (non DLC of old and smaller new games), what happens in between? I hear a lot of comparisons to Sega Saturn numbers for adoption rate. The Saturn was awesome, but it is something to consider sales wise.

Wind Waker HD, Super Mario U (& Super Luigi!), Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Rayman Legends, The Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3, Sonic All-Star Racing, NES Remix 1 & 2, Mario Kart 8, Scribblenauts Unmasked, Super Mario 3D World, ZombiU, Shovel Knight, DKC Tropical Freeze, and Lego City Undercover have all brought success to my Wii U.

It seems the Wii U is very similar to the Gamecube....hardly any third-party support with first-party games to keep it afloat.  The key has always been third-party.  You gotta make the game development process easy and don't have to go through huge loops to get your product approved, have hardware that is enticing enough for them to play with (powerful hardware that is cost effective), and technology that targets the mainstream and hardcore audience (these days good online gaming & social media, although I dislike them both).  I've study the game industry, and it's always the same.  When a console has a large variety of games, it will do really well.  Third-party doesn't like the Wii U, and there aren't any signs they will ever support the Wii U in the near future. 

Nintendo will just have to keep pumping out their own games until the system's successor comes out in a couple of years.  Nintendo has already said they are working on the next system over a year ago.

The thing with Nintendo is they can wait it out with a system that is under performing at best, and still do well while they wait for more devlopment for it to strengthen sales....

Sega as a company couldn't which is why they ditched the failing Saturn and jumped onto the Dreamcast which ultimatly failed not because of the system but the company Sega was done for and couldn't keep it going.  Sega couldn't wait it out and let the devleopers work on their system and thus it failed.....the most fun about the Dreamcast was that Sega took ALMOST direct ports of their arcade games for quick cash and to sell the system.  and if it wasn't for the PS2 maybe Sega could have held on one more year and made a better foothold........but the Dreamcast had other issues like how anyone with a cd burner (which by that point it was already coming standared in most home computers) did and made burned copies of their games without any real copy protetction to save the company.....


My bigest hope for the Wii U is that Nintendo will feel pressured to merge their 3DS system and made another add on to play 3DS/DS games on the Wii U much likey they did for the SNES, and Gamecube...........apart from that I am honestly not worried (yet) about the Wii U or Nintendo's future...


sure maybe they will absorbed Capcom, or these other devleopers that need to be saved financially......

I don't mean save them as a company. Making a success of, or yes, saving the Wii U is what I mean. I don't think Nintendo itself needs saving.

Then in that regard there is really one two options...or a third if you combine them

1)  Regain 3rd party support (from game developers/publishers that matter) XSEED is a great start.

2)  Buy out some of these game companies that are dying out like Capcom

3)  Do both.......
Or a possible 4th make an attachment that would allow 3DS/DS owners to play their games on the Wii U with touch pad support.  That would be a system seller right there.  As their handheld market has a strong base that would easily translate to the Wii U consumer base.

Sadly the only way to regain 3rd party support would be to dump money at a game developer/publisher and say "make me a game that is exclusive to the WiiU" similar how they did it with Bayonetta.

Sooo.....besides the Wii U dry humping, which I agree with for the most part, I think the best suggestions are:

- Buy another developer(s) with an established list of franchises
- Reconfigure the Wii U to play DS/3DS game cards
- Get a lot more quality first party titles out to market

I don't think buying temporary third party love is the answer, nor do I think luring them back is a viable option. The sales of existing third party titles has closed that door. Ask Ubisoft if they will make another Zombie U.

Here is another thought. Why not concentrate on your next console with an exit strategy for the current one? If the next console is a Gameboy/Nintendo home console in one (which can be done with HDMI out), which includes two nicely designed controllers and nifty base to drop the handheld into for play on the TV (like the NEOGEO thingy they released a year and a bit ago), and game cards instead of DVDs, they might have a chance to steal the show with something unique that actually serves two purposes. It's a rough idea I know and I'm sure other people have thought of this, but I think its an interesting one, and one that they are more than likely exploring since they combined their handheld and console division.

The best idea is to scrap the Wii U and start all over again...  and this is coming from a guy with 20 Wii U games that loves the system.

The XB1 and PS4 have approximately 5-7 more years of life ahead of them.  If Nintendo could get a system out next Christmas with a the power of a PS4, that means it has 4-6 years to compete directly with those systems, with an ability to have all of the same third party games.

Right now the Wii U is losing money.  The cost of the system will go down and the install base will go up and the system may turn a profit in the near future.  The problem is from a business perspective, "turning a profit" isn't good enough.  If the best case scenario is making a little money, the system is still a failure.

Launch the new Nintendo system Christmas 2015 and launch the new handheld along side of it.  The big launch game?  Pokémon, which can link between the handheld version and the first home system Pokémon that is cannon and not a spin-off.  You can get the home system for $350, the handheld for $200, or the combo pack WITH Pokémon for $450.  Handheld can be used as a controller, but it is not mandatory, so developers don't have to get creative when they don't actually have creativity.  However, this combo does allow for backwards compatibility with Wii U games.  Any "Indie" game that is downloaded, so not a full retail product that is on disc as well, must have mandatory cross-buy and it costs the same as the game on the XB1 and PS4.  This would give the most value to buying the game on the Nintendo system, essentially locking down the sales of downloadable games for Nintendo for anyone that has more than one system.

I for a long time was thinking a system that Nintendo's savior would be a system that is BOTH the handheld and the console, but I am afraid that would be underpowered and Nintendo would be in the same place they are now, so I changed my mind about that.

Finally, what about the people that own Wii Us?  Will they be pissed they bought a system that only had 3 years of life?  Do Ambassador Program 2.0 and anyone that has a Wii U registered automatically gets a bundle of Nintendo software downloaded on their system.  This will be if you buy within 12 months of release to provide an incentive for early adoption.  Give something like 5 NES, 5 SNES, 5 N64, 5 GC, and 5 Wii games for free, but let the users pick from 15 games on each system.  To make things even better, these games have exclusive re-skins never to be available anywhere else ever again...  so perhaps you have a character select in Super Mario Brothers where you can use Link, but this is a simple sprite swap so it isn't too much work for Nintendo.

I just solved Nintendo's problems.

What do mean when you say N64 type Ram expansion? Does the Wii U require more memory for anything? I was under the impression that graphic enhancements would be limited by system design at this point (IE: GPU/CPU capabilities). I'm not sure adding memory will enhance anything on the Wii U. I suppose more memory would allow for a smoother running game, but I'm not sure that was an issue with the Wii U anyway.

Also, I'm not sure anyone would buy a Wii U for COD. If I cared about COD, I would definitely buy a PS4 or Xbone. I don't think a Wii U would even be a consideration for COD at this point. It's not really Nintendo's strength. It's a "nice to have" . It would be like putting Pikmin on the Xbone. Not sure that would draw a lot of attention from Xbone gamers. But, maybe I'm wrong.. I just got done a night of Blops 2 with my Son, CoD on the Wii U is actually a lot of fun, having the screen on the pad is something he loves and gives me the full TV, and we can play against each other or online that way.

Supposedly there is at least 1 Nintendo titles each month for 2015 plus some nice stuff on the way, frankly EA can still fuck off, PeS is coming to replace fifa so soccer fans are covered, Madden is still big but people are pissed that no one else can touch the NFL, so that isn't going to last forever.

As long as they keep the software coming, plus the nice little collab here and there, I'm pefrectly happy, there is enough indie and small but stable 3rd party support to fill in the gaps.

Sad story is Xbone is selling poorly, but they still support it, it's fanboyish of the industry and I hope plenty of companies take a hit due to it.
