Best Dungeon Explorer class for single-player play?

Hey guys,

I've been trying to play a bunch of DE lately, and although the game is obviously great, I obviously suck at it.  Bad.  Mainly I've been trying to figure out which character class is best for single-player play.  I feel like I try not to play the game like it's Gauntlet and just power my way through everything, but I still end up getting killed a lot.

Thanks for any tips that you can provide.  I tried searching the forums, but the search function ain't the greatest, and this site doesn't appear to be searchable with Google.

Thanks!

Chris

The Hermit and Princess are pretty good once you've reached 'em, but to start out you should try the Fighter or the Elf / Thief / Witch; the former for his strength, high HP, and magic shield and the latter for their heal magic.

I was having the same issue jibba. Started out not quite knowing who to use. I've tried the fighter my last few times and have done alright, but I'm terrible too.

Need some practice in me, that's for sure. I'd like to beat this game one day.

Gentlegamer

I use Fighter and upgrade speed a couple times first.

If you are unaware when beating a boss and getting a crystal wait till that crystal changes colors and  step on it when it is the color you want to upgrade that specific ability.

PukeSter

Thief is very slow.

I liked Warlock more than the Fighter.

It's ok to use a restart for every dungeon. The game is tough for single player!

DildoKKKobold

The fighter is hands down the best character, as his potions either double defense or offense. However, I always find myself running low on skulls in the late game. As a new player, you want to be relying on white potions for the harder times anyway. I think my best time when I was actively speedrunning was around 24 minutes.

I've been playing a game this evening as the fighter, and have been doing well.  I think I've beaten 4 bosses so far?  Last one was the Tiger dude.  I've been taking every crystal as an Attack upgrade, so that seems to be helping me mess some fools up.

Thanks for all the replies, guys!  Too bad me, Tooch, and Nully can't play a 3-player game over the net...

I actually had friends over about a month or so ago and I made them try this with me. Thought it would be easier with 3 people. It was not. At all. Yelling "Don't rush!" gets old real fast.

Though online turbo would be cool. We should figure that out somehow. Maybe we can make a broadband adapter for our duos? :)

I know Jabbajibba said he upgraded attack almost exclusively, but I agree: boosting speed for the fighter is an easy way to be successful, quickly in DE.

Fighter is always your best bet starting out.  He is the most balanced.

Shit, I didn't know that.

need more practice and a brush up with the manual... particularly when it comes to use of magic. Gives me an idea of what to do tonight!
This is basically a carbon copy of my DE experience.

If I recall something about the small crystals....

When you die don't you lose those permanently from you're upgrades but you keep the big crystal level ups?

It's been to long....

spenoza

I also like to farm certain enemies for stat powerups. Just make sure you can deal with the Death Garlic (as I call them).

The items don't carry over with passwords. Crystals do.

I've actually been doing much better with the game last night and this morning.  I re-started my game from scratch again this morning, and alternated between upgrading agility and attack with every boss battle (still using the fighter.)  I just made it to the slippery slime or whatever he's called, but he pinned me up against a wall and I was on my last life, so I'm going to have to find my way back over there again.  The more I play this game, the more I love it, though.

Heh, it can be tough in multiplayer when you're playing with goofs that don't know what they're doing, especially when they keep standing in front of you, blocking your shots.

I always remember gambling as well to increase my lives.

8 or 9 is max right? When you get down to 2-4'ish gamble away to get yourself back up.

I could be wrong on this too. Dang I am gonna have to sit down and play this game again.

That's it, no more Bomberman for the fiance, I am taking my Duo back and sitting down to some Dungeon Explorer.

Edit:

This was with the Fighter. I leveled the attack two times then the agility two times and then I just dumped everything into the purple one... stamina until I was at around 400hp then I went back to adding to attack. I think there was one place in the game I couldn't reach something because I didn't have the agility to pass or push against the force pushing against me. Speed does help a lot especially for boss battles but it's not required. I prefer higher health and lining up my shots quickly vs trying to run around.

Ok, after I woke up last night I sat down with a beer or two... Popped in some Dungeon Explorer. After continuing from my passwords three times I finally reached the end screen. The game is harder than I remember. But I think I am just very rusty as it's been almost 15-20yrs since I have actually played it. I remember running through this game without ever dying... Oh well just takes a bit more practice to get back to that level of play.

Oh.. side note I obviously freed the princess and got her code but I couldn't remember how to get the Hermit in the house east of the starting castle. Were there any other hidden characters in this game or just those two? I know Dungeon Explorer 2 had a lot more hidden characters that I am pretty sure I never found.

Well if that's the password for the hermit that's all and good but how do you actually go about getting him officially? I guess I could Google a bit. Might not want to many spoilers in this thread if the OP and others are on their first play through.

Nazi NecroPhile

Play as the Bard and go to the Hermit's house to challenge him.  If you're strong enough to survive, you'll get to play as him.

That password will do nothing on its own.

The fighter starts with a higher number of points than any other character. That gives him a huge advantage at the start.
