Everdrive Questions

Hi Guys,

This just landed.



Having only experience with emulators in the past I'm not 100% on how to use them. 

So, I've got a  question in two parts.

1, Is it just a case of dragging roms onto the SD card then bunging it in the Everdrive?

2, Or is there a process I need to go through first?


Any help would be awesome.

Well, I got the Everdrive up and running at the weekend! 

MASSIVE thanks to NightWolve for the guidance and everything else.


Only problem (if it is a problem) I have now is I've got every Hu card game and I hardly know where to start!!!

 Anyone else find they can't stick to one game and keep reaching for the reset button to try another?

Also need to gets me a Everdrive case, I've seen a few designs and like the look of the Buffalo Wing ones but they're about £19 shipped which seems on the steep side.
 
Anyway I've made a list of Shooters that I'm going to work through, seems like a good a place as any to start.

This is one of the drawbacks to emulation.  I can remember back in the day when my family had the NES and just one game - Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt for the first 8 months.  Then, I traded some toys of mine to a friend for a copy of Rambo.  Man, that game is a bit of a stinker, but we played it and played it and played it because it was all that we had, and we finally beat it.  Then, we borrowed Mega Man 2 from a friend, and did the same thing, just played it forever until we beat it.  We didn't have the money to buy games or rent them at the time, so every game that came our way was cherished - Section Z (we never did beat it), Micky Mouscapades (we beat it), Legacy of the Wizard (never beat it). The Legend of Zelda (we beat it), etc...  The thing is, I remember what it was like with only a few game choices and the mindset of "This game can and will be beat if it takes all month!" and "I'm going to get some enjoyment out of this game if it's the last thing that I do!"

When I tried some emulation for Gameboy Advance and Nintendo DS and had 100+ 'new' games to play, I had the same feeling that you're feeling, "Eh, I don't know if this game is EXACTLY what I want to play right now." - after playing for 15-45 minutes, I would switch to another game.  Then I wouldn't come back to the game, because I didn't feel like replaying the first 30 minutes and/or I had forgotten what was going on in the game.

Anyway, what I'm saying is that having the entire library at your fingertips is awesome, but please, please give these games a chance!  When you start a game, try your best to play through it without skipping around blithely.  You mentioned that you hardly know where to start.  Maybe playing through them alphabetically or by release date would be the way to do it, so that you don't miss any of the games.

Absolutely. This is a common phenomenon.

It even has a name: LE JADED DILETTANTE...and I suppose anyone who had access to a lot of games and lost interest in them for want of new thrills suffered from it, even before emulation made it ridiculously easy to play every game, ever.

The only reason I beat Karate Kid was for the reasons you stated—I was stuck with it for 6 months.

Otherwise, what a crappy game to squeeze enjoyment from!

It's the same problem when you own hundreds of legitimate physical games, but oh what a nice problem to have.  I find it's helpful to have a clear goal, like beating someone else's high score, trying to complete a new game every two weeks, playing games in series (like all Ys or Cosmic Fantasy), etc.

Yeah, I suffered this also. I remember how exciting it was to have everything collected at your fingertips and a few clicks away with emulation! But then it all became a gaming browsing collection, that's about it. Heh. I already had some slowdown issues though and rarely making the time for my backlog collection of originals, so there is more to blame than that, but yeah...

I have personally found a ton of enjoyment in playomg games based around a theme. For a while I only played batman games, and it was a blast to see the different takes on the characters and genres, playing theough some (NES Sunsoft Batman, PS3 Arkham Asylum) and putting some down never to return (Genesis Batman Forever)..

I went through a phase where I mostly played Rennovation published titles like Granada and El Viento.

I have been trying lately to beat all of the castlevanias in order of release. This started when I got my Duo-R, I didnt want to play the pinnicale of the series before finishing some games I never could in the past. I'd beaten II, IV, SOTN and all of the portable games after Game Boy. I never could get past Death in the first game and level 9 in III. So when I went on this quest I finally beat the first game, but am now stuck on level 9 of III.

Having access to a lot of games is certainly a blessing and a curse, but I love having the games available for reasons like this

This right here.  Have an objective, and stick to it.  Although, sometimes I will just pick a random game.

The plan:

I think I'm going to chew through all the shooters first, it is, after all, why I bought the system.

This at least gives me a starting point and a framework to build around.

  I'll probably not play them in alphabetical order so, as I'm a bit of a list maker, I'll keep track that way and maybe even note down a few lines about the game. This should help me if/when I return to a certain game in the future.

I used to have a zip file I made with all the games US and JPN organized with doubles removed (Dual releases) but I'm sure there is another similar file out there.
You'll love having the Everdrive, mine has never given me an issue and it's an easy way to play all the games you don't have for the console.

Though it has a mixture of HuCard and CD games.

Basically a perfect start would be Soldier Blade!
PC Denjin and GunHed are held with very high regard.
Magical Chase is actually a really great game despite the controversy.
I love Hana Taka Daka but nobody else seems to care about it.

Soldier Blade has already had quite a bit of play as I like that style of shooter and am a fan of Star Soldier/Super Star Soldier/Star Force on the Famicom.

I've been using a shoot em up list that I printed off from a link that BigusShmuck posted on the first page of my "hello new guy" thread.

I got the pink highlighter out and ran it over all the Hu card games, as they're moved in with the CD games, to make it easier to see them. One thing I noticed is that there are a few games missing from the rom pack I was given so I think I'll find them out first and make sure I've got a complete set before I start.

Quick question on the everdrive: can you load a super cd hucard image and use it to play all the CDs? I only have the 2.0 card for my us cd system. Want one of these and was curious if that would work.

version 2 should work for running System 3 image. I don't know if version 1.x can run System 3.
