I have had an IFU for a while but have recently had problems with glitching graphics on CD games. I thought it might be a problem with the CD-ROM unit but have tried it on another IFU I recently acquired and the glitches are not present.
I haven't read of any common issues with the capacitors in the IFU, but due to the age of the machine they probably start to fail eventually don't they? The audio is unaffected however, which is why I am not sure if it is a capacitor issue as the audio is usually first to have problems isn't it?

the IFU will have ram issues that cause grafx glitches
if its ram the glitches should be consistent, as in the same game will glitch the same every time
what game and when can tell you which ram

Ergot_Cholera

I tested it with Valis 3 because it has the long intros and speech. Some of the intro images load fine,  others are a complete mess whilst some are duplicated in a grid pattern. The main game seems to have a band of duplicated graphics along the middle.
is this enough info or is more detail required for proper diagnosis?

thesteve

try Y'S3
the intro runs into the PCM ram part way through, so it shows an actual bank change
at this point i suspect the CD work ram or system card

Ergot_Cholera

I don't have Ys 3, I only have a few CD games. I don't think it is the system card, it is a 3.0 and works fine with the other IFU I have.

thesteve

fair enough
is the error always the same (looks the same every time)
i had a TG cd base with some blocky grafx on the intro to CF2 and crashes, that was bad work ram
had a few duo with grafx issues on some games only and some missing sounds that were PCM ram wiring
had a SCDR2 with the grafx issues on some games, was bad PCM ram

Ergot_Cholera

Which is the work RAM and which is the PCM? I see M5M5256BFP X2 and LC3517BML.

I get some blocky interference on the intro screen to AIII. I think it's just the game though as I have no problems on anything else.

Yup another old thread brought back to life..

I got a similar problem with popful mail.  I tried cleaning the lens and the disc but the game doesn't load after a certain cut scene, you just hear the sampled speech and then it just hangs with a black screen this has happened several times and I have also tried swapping the Arcade pro and super CD card around and still the same thing.

Sometimes it loads and continues but the graphics are glitched but I am able to continue with the game.

after several more tries it finally goes perfect....and I managed to beat the game.

Think it might be the disc has a bad spot?  It's the only area of the game where I get this problem and I have so far not encountered this with another other CD game...

Is this the only game it happens in?

yup only in that spot. I can exit the area and goto all the other areas in the game and there is no problem.  It is just that cut scene that seems to be trouble so I don't think it is the console.

The disc could have some disc rot. You should be able to see it if you look at the bottom of the disc.

can't see any any physical markings on the disc except for a few very faint less than 1cm scratches.  I am wondering whether to get the disc resurfaced.

Seems to be temperamental sometimes it loads properly and sometimes it just hangs

burn a copy and see if its the same
