I've only played the first level of each, but I think we all know where JJ & Jeff stands.

I would say this would be the first matchup in history to be a total KO in favor of the challenger, but I know we've got one or two weirdos here that will actually vote for JJ and Jeff.

Turbo D

I'm that weirdo! I voted JJ & Jeff:D

probably if you wrote kato-chan & ken-chan, i would have voted for that one

no seriously, son son II is a way too great game that kato & ken could have a chance against it. but which doesn't mean that i don't highly appreciate kato & ken. it's still an awesome and tough game!

Since its been a while since I've played Son Son II, I fired it up last night and was reminded why its not my favorite game, even though it mimmicks Black Tiger. Its kinda like Dracula XX in how it tries to use the gameplay of the original, but has level design and elements that contradict it.

Its still a good game, but the gameplay isn't as good as JJ & Jeff and its not nearly as much fun. Although certainly not a dealer breaker, Son Son II's music is boring while JJ & Jeff's is catchy and memorable. So although the poll is for which game I prefer, I found JJ & Jeff to be the superior game as well.

I was actually surprised how clear the winner was, I expected this to be worse than Super Star Soldier versus Dragon Spirit. :P

Though I've yet to play Son Son II, I still had to choose it over JJ & Jeff.  Poop jokes only go so far and as much as I enjoy the latter, I'd only pick it over a real stinker (i.e. Ballistix, Impossamole, or Genpei Toumaden).

hmm..  if I may

Air Zonk 12, Aero Blasters 5   ...  This is a toughie.  I'm not much of a Zonk fan but AB is just sooo difficult.  it's a toss up.  Both games have some great tunes (atleast the first two in AB that I've set ear to).
Dragon's Curse 9, Dynastic Hero 5 ...  Easily DC.
Rondo of Blood 17, Lords of Thunder 11 ... pass
Ninja Spirit 19, Splatterhouse 9 ... This is a great pairing of games.  I guess on any given day I'm more of a Splatterhouse man
Super Star Soldier 15, Dragon Spirit 3 ... Probably SSS although I'm not sure why. I don't love it.  Dragon Spirit is a good game but..
Dungeon Explorer 18, The Legendary Axe 13 ... DE.  I love Axe but 99% of the time I leave it frustrated.
Altered Beast 11, Batman 8 ... I haven't been fortunate enough yet to play either. (of course I played AB on the Gen in the day)
Soldier Blade 16, JB Harold 6 ... It must be Soldier Blade !  I'm saving JB for after I go sXe.   ;)

If you get J.J. and Jeff, I URGE you to actually play through it instead of just basing your opinion off a quick level run like most haters do. The platforming gets insanely fun as the levels go on, it's a lot more than just "poop jokes". Truly one of the most overlooked platformers ever made, it really feels like Super Mario Bros. on the Turbo.

JJ & Jeff is the only decent straight-plaformer that I can think of on Turbo/PCE. Games like New Adventure Island and Blue Blink are platformer-shooters. Ghost Manor and Son Son II are more like Wizards & Warriors.

What about that crazy game where you constantly change forms?

At first I thought this was some kind of sarcastic reference to Shape Shifter, but are you talking about Obacchama Kun? That's another fantastic PCE platformer, which reminded me of J.J. and Jeff a little. I was very impressed with it when I played through it and it's one of my favorite platformers now.

I think it's a little bit of a stretch calling Blue Blink and New Adventure Island platform-shooters.  A good number of the weapons in these games are lobbed and do not reach the other end of the screen.  By your logic Super Mario Brothers would be a platform shooter because he can toss fireballs.  Tossing and shooting aren't really the same thing.  Monster Lair is a platform shooter- most of the weapons fire through the end of the screen.

The three Bonk titles, Axe I & II, Bonze Adventure, Doraemon Arabian Nights, Dracula Boy, Jackie Chan, Liquid Kids-  all leagues better than JJ & Jeff- imo.

Obacchama Kun is a fun and bizarre little game- fantastic, though?  Keranu is there any tg/pce game that you aren't head over heels for, or is it just the mediocre titles you're in love with?  :P

I totally agree. Hero Tonma is a "plooter" (shooter/platformer)  :P. I would never have considered NAI a plooter.

I like Obacchama Kun more than some of the more popular platform titles because it has some really unique level designs and even more so, original and outrageous enemy patterns. You really have to play through these kind of games more and take notice of these things because if you simply just look at the crazy aspects of the game, you're missing out.

J.J. and Jeff always reminded me of Super Mario Bros. with how you have to get used to pacing yourself with the tight run and jump mechanics. Despite J..J. and Jeff having a kick attack, you really don't use this much for attacking enemies and so you're able to breeze your way through levels by bumping off enemies heads and performing the same kind of platforming you would in SMB. It's all about mastering that flow in J.J. and Jeff that makes it so fun, which I think most people don't bother with because they're spending too much time stopping to kick enemies or whatever. The warp zones obviously took inspiration from SMB too :D .

In New Adventure Island, Blue Blink and Monster Lair your only offense is to shoot. Jumping on enemies hurts you, so you're just dodging and shooting. Thats why they feature multiple projectile weapons.

In JJ & Jeff and Super Mario Bros(even with flower power), you not only jump on enemies to kill them, but they are integrated into the platforming and level design. In JJ & Jeff you also have the kick and spray can attacks, but the farts are only needed in special cases and the kicks are more for secrets. In these games, the main focus is on platforming.

JJ & Jeff is actually Wonderboy/Adventure Island with the shooting substituted with jumping on enemies.

Again, those aren't as pure of platformers as JJ & Jeff. What makes most of those games cool are the things that make them unique/less platformy.

I did play through it- was a pretty easy clear- I liked the board with the roller coaster- that was fun- again I'm not knocking it- it definitely is original- I just don't feel that it's fantastic  :)

I see what you're saying- only I feel it's definitely more "tossing" than "shooting"- as most of the weapons don't reach very far and the boss fights are really like the only places where the "tossing" is required- especially with NAI - as you start off without a weapon after you die each time- jumping and running are significantly more important in these games- I also feel that shooting platformers should be forced scrollers- like Monster Lair, Veigues and Genji Tsuushin Agedama- I guess it's just a  matter of opinion though.

I don't consider those games real platform-shooters either, only compared to a straight run & jump game like JJ & Jeff.

I've always wanted to play a platformer that emphasized platforming, ie: only running and jumping. I thought that if I ever picked up some programming skills, I'd try to make a platformer with no enemies or deaths(I hate instant deaths), only various obstacles, tons of actual platforms and all kinds of challenges per stage... with ranks based on times.

But you must admit, the different ways each enemy attacked was brilliant :) . I can't think of any other platformer that put as much concentration on the variety of attacking and doging enemies.

Sounds like Niko Niko Pun- you really can't die in it and it's just running and jumping- though ludicrously easy- a game made for the wee set.  You have Bakushou Yoshimoto?  That's as pure as a run and jump you can get I guess- though you can get hit.

Yeah I just wish that the gameplay was better- some of those levels felt as flat and unfinished as Talespin levels- and the secondary characters seemed to make the game a bit too easy...

The secondary characters were extremely fun and clever. I just love the physics of the old man throwing the hammers, feels so nice.
