been watching the 3rd episode of PCEngineFXTV, and I was suprised: When describing fatal fury special requires a Arcade card and adaptor, you refer to the cards as "hugh" cards.

I had always referred to them as "who" cards, but now I wonder if that is correct. If the cards are, as I presume, named for hudson soft, shouldn't they be called "huh" cards? How do the Japanese pronounce "hucard"?

Good question there...I don't think this topic has ever come up in any message board (that I've seen over the years)...mostly because everyone that I've talked to about it says "Hugh" not "Who".  I think that "hugh" is the most common pronunciation at least for Americans...for the Japanese I'm not sure....

1)"hugh" card (U in Universe)
2)"who" card (U in neUtopia)
3)"huh" card (U in hUdson)
4)"turbochip"
5) other

Hehehe, cool topic! :D

With my Portuguese accent, I'll choose number 3: "huh" card (U in hUdson).

I've always said "Hugh Cards" because I think it just sounds more natural to me. :)

The Japanese romanize the sound "hugh" as "hyu" so I think it's safe to assume that they romanized "HuCard" to be prounounced "Hoo-Card" since the "hoo" sound is romanized as "hu" in japanese.  Is this formum unicode??? Let's find out...

フカード : Hu-Card
ヒュカード : Hyu-Card

In PCEngine magazines from the era in question, the top kana is always used.  I believe this settles the issue.

(You'll have to have Japanese fonts enabled to view the examples above.)

Of course there's absolutely nothing wrong with pronouncing it the other way, as long as you understand that your Americanizing the pronunciation.

Just like Japanese say "AI-SU-KURI-MU" instead of Ice Cream, you're free to say "Hugh-Card".  :P  Let's all mispronounce each other's languages with love and respect!
