No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

I was talking to inrunranrinrunsomebody about this today, and just wanted to mention I got past the bit I was confused by - but humorously, you were saying I should give the baddies some credit not to put two conspirators in adjacent cells - but they did! She was just to the right, rather than in the one I could see. Hah!

Now I'm off to unravel the mystery of how to beat this boss. Gah!
Thanks again for the help.

termis

Just wait till you get to the last boss of this one.  Awesome is the word.

exodus

Sadly I already saw a bit of it on youtube. I spoiled everything!

This game really is quite nice, I'm surprised more people don't talk about it, given how action-oriented it is. And the initial town music is great! Wish I knew how to strip it out into an MP3. It's been stuck in my head all day though, so maybe it's for the best this way.

I'd recommend it to anyone who's got a moderate grasp of japanese - the language is pretty simple.

nat

I got mid way through this game this past year when my save game memory got completely wiped out. I'll give it another run to completion some day, but I was a bit bummed after the hours I'd put in already.

Oh, it has gotten a lot of love, but the folks who usually promoted it haven't been around here (or other forums) for a long time. It used to often be included in the "underappreciated" threads on various forums...

Despite some minor annoyances, Blood Gear is top gear. :)

ah, I see!
and nat, that's horrid, that happened to me on the saturn once. Lost a whoooole lot of RPG saves, and never went back to any of the games that got screwed.

yeah, I'm totally stuck again though, trying to figure out how to beat this orange boss that has rotating guns all in the room, but which takes no apparent damage when I shoot him. then he shoots energy balls which kill me right away! There's some sort of shiny gate-looking thing behind him, but I can't get there. any help? I went back to town but didn't find any clues - I suspected maybe I could reflect his shots with my shield, but I can't manage to keep the thing until I arrive at the boss, heh.

SignOfZeta

So I started playing this today. Damn. Its nice! The control sucks at first but the more you upgrade your shit the smoother fighting becomes.

This is truly a high end, full on Hudson release. I can't believe I've never even heard of it before.

Pro tip: To avoid the bottoming out delay caused by big jumps, use your Arm Gun (or whatever its call, the basic punch) just before you land.
IMG

nat

You get some pretty killer artillery as the game progresses.

exodus

well chad, let me know if you get to the freaking stupid boss I'm talking about :P

SignOfZeta

I think I can see the boss you are talking about on the map. I just got through the mountains.
IMG

exodus

my new speculation is that I was not shooting him in the right spot. try aiming in different places and see if you can get his health bar to come up.

SignOfZeta

How did you get the girl out of jail? Do I have to leave the town and come back later for her?

Yep, the artillery is pretty cool and I looove its sound effects.

awack

This thread has forced me against my will to start playing this game again and this time, beat it.

I wish you could have more guns in inventory at once instead of having to deplete all of the ammo in order to pick up a different gun.

exodus

to get her out you've got to unlock the gate - put on the empire soldiers' clothing so you can get into all the buildings around there - in one, there's a guy behind a bar - walk up to the left and you'll hear the soldiers talking about the key to the gate being moved somewhere. the guy at the bar tells you the combo (it was RRLR if I remember, but you have to choose it in kanji). then at the other building you'll see the guys bringing a switch there, which basically looks like a save machine. input the code, then you'll hear a gate open, and if you go back to the cell she'll be gone. then you can get to the boss, too, once you leave the city and all.

SignOfZeta

Ah, I must have missed the save point looking thing on the wall. I did all that other stuff.

BTW, I love being is disguise. It was so cool in Ys 1&2.
IMG

exodus

yeah, disguises are awesome.

SignOfZeta

OK, I figured it out. You do have to leave the city. You have to go though the next action stage and blow up some shit. Then the guys in the city take precautions. When you come back there will be troops standing next to all those parked Gears and the conversation that you eves drop on will change and all that stuff you mentioned will happen.
IMG

exodus

ohhhh. I had done that already by trying to go beat the boss originally. man, that's complicated. heh. lemme know what you think of that boss!

SignOfZeta

OK, I beat that boss today. I had my weapons upgraded fully, bought the best shield (did not equip it at this time), equipped the beam saber and made sure I had a Shot Gun in storage as well as being maxed on Medium repair kits. My body was one less than maxed on all levels.

Head towards the boss killing everything with a mix of beam sword and shot gun. Meter you shotgun usage so that you run out of shotgun about half way through the boss's base. Then you can have room to grab the Powered Bazooka that sits in...the Bazooka Room. Don't fire it yet.

When you finally get to to boss, equip the shield and hold down the fire button in his face so that he gets beam sabered at maximum speed. Ignore the random fire from the ceiling and such. This is kind of a "Mother Brain" fight. Your health will drop very quickly during this so make sure you are healing if you get below 1/2 health. You will need every Medium repair pack you could carry. Eventually his mid section will open up, instantly switch to the Powered Bazooka and hold down the fire button until he dies. If he doesn't die before he closes up, you'll probably not survive another cycle. I'm sure its possible to use more skill that this. You might be able to Lock yourself to the right and dodge the big glowing ball (which is the vast majority of damage to you) but I got sick of dying that way and just bought enough kit to pass it this way.

After this you get a jump pack that lets you double jump. You can then cross the mountains to the south, see a cinema, and explore a new map. Also, the new shops will be able to upgrade your Gear to higher levels than the previous shops. I hadn't maxed my body or legs yet, but I'm glad there is more room to grow.

This game is good, btw.
IMG

termis

Yeah, I first tried this one out on a iso, but then the game definitely proved it was purchase worthy.  I think I paid around ~$20 for mine some time ago, but looks like the prices have even gone down since (there's one up for $13 on ebay now).  Definitely worth the asking price.

exodus

wow, you really did some grinding then! I guess the solution is to just stick it out. I feel like I'd do fine right now if I had a shield (I have it equipped and keep losing it on my way there - so I'll just purposefully lose it and equip it later. Should be a dequip option :\)

I always have a bunch of bazookas for whatever reason, so I'll just head down with a shield and slice/blast away. How'd you get a beam sword btw? Or are you just talking about the normal sword you can buy in town?

exodus

oh, and I peeked ahead a bit via youtube videos some time ago, and you get at least one entire additional tier of upgrading, so don't worry about maxing out now.

exodus

#23
and btw, let me know if you need a quick primer on what all the upgrades do. Another thing I discovered - if you sell a weapon with one bullet left in it, it still sells for the same!

I wound up leveling myself way too much - I knew that if I kept the shield I'd be alright! I only used one M-unit on him. Hehe...oh well!

SignOfZeta

Quote from: exodusOr are you just talking about the normal sword you can buy in town?
Yeah, sorry, the original sword. You don't get the next sword until the next map.
IMG

exodus

yeah. that next purple boss was a bastard til I figured out I could just sword swipe him whenever he came near. shouldn't have wasted all those m-units on him!

SignOfZeta

I wasted that boss in about 3 seconds. He was so easy compared to the last boss, or even other grunts on his stage.

So I'm loving this game. I just got my anime requisite "mid season re-build" and now I'm wondering what to do about the blue...acid stuff, that burns up my mech and all the enemy mechs at the same time. Any help?
IMG

exodus

you're further than I am I'm afraid. I'll let you know when I get there...got distracted by my 360 returning this week (and work...mostly work).

SignOfZeta

You better get there. You're the reason I'm playing this game!
IMG

exodus

haha...I will! I just have not so much free time. I should've convinced you after I had a larger head start.

SignOfZeta

OK, so I needed to blow up a wall to escape the rising acid stuff. None of you regular weapons hurt it. The exact name of the item that does it slips my mind, but it was some sort of non-sensical kana gibberish name followed by the word "bomb". I got it from the old Einstein looking dude in the first town on this map.

Now I'm just working on not getting my ass kicked in the boss's base, which probably requires some grinding.

This is the spot where I realized that the game isn't completely linear while getting tips from runinruder, as my experience varied from his. The key to not getting stuck is to know that there isn't only one way to progress through the game. There may not be multiple paths available at all times, but there are times when you'll encounter something that isn't necessarily meant for the path you've arrived from and can act as misdirection.

I was writing a walkthrough/journal as I went along and I'm pretty sure I made it past this point. I'll see if I can find it in case you get stuck (another forum member got stuck there). I'm pretty sure that termis finished the game not too long ago.
Justin the Not-So-Cheery Black/Hack/CrackTiger helped Joshua Jackass, Andrew/Arkhan Dildovich and the DildoPhiles destroy 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together! Both times he blamed the Aarons and their staff in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged/destructive/doxxing toxic turbo troll gang which he covers up for under the "community" euphemism!

nat

I had made it a fair ways past that point before my save game got wiped, as I remember having to blow up that wall. I don't remember many details about the boss base itself, however.

Well, it's already been more than two years since I went through it, but that part definitely rings a bell as tripping me up for a bit.  But the place that really got me was the big maze with bunch of warp spots (thread about it here).

pixeljunkie

rise from your grave! I'm finally trying to get through this with the FAQ that is online. I am on the first boss at the bridge and he kicks my ass. The FAQ mentions the use of an R4 rifle [I think, I'm writing from memory here and a few beers in for tonight]

Where can I find this weapon? I've been to all the weapon shops and its not for sale anywhere. I'm using the J19 [?] gun that everyone sells and that plasma sword thats also readily available. I've also upgraded as much as possible at the factory every chance I get.

What's the deal with the hunters you run into at the destroyed town? Is there an explanation of the story online anywhere?

pixeljunkie

returning to this game sober this morning, I figured out a few more things. My main interest is some form of translated story. Even paraphrased?

That landing trick also works with that Ruga Sword thing ie the upgraded arm weapon infact it should work with any melee weapon.

Later on you get some kind of back pack that allows you to float a bit higher once you reached the height of your max jump but you need to time that right..

I know this is an old thread but I got stuck somewhere near the end of emerald dragon and not sure where to go since my warp stone has run out and I am stuck somewhere near the last island but I started playing this and well it's quite a decent adventure platforming game.

It looks like Hudson Soft took the basics of Keith Courage in Alpha Zones/Mashin Eiyuden Wataru  and transformed it into a bigger game.

There is a level with really nice water fall effect that has layered scrolling and I just wish more levels throughout the game have more scrolling fields.  I'm just past the bit where you rescue your red haired lady friend from the prison and now gathering money to strengthen my mech.

The Mechs are called PG = Powered Gears

EDIT

A game like released so late in the pc engine's life should have had some minor ARCADE card support for some reduced loading in cut scenes etc.

The explosion sound FX are just the best for any pce game!

when you are in town and out of your PG holding down button II while walking great increases your speed.

When in the battle screen if you press RUN you will lock in that direction.  To unlock and be able to turn and face the other way press RUN again.

exodus

Ahh, this thread's revival makes me want to play this again!!! I stopped a few days after I made this thread because I went somewhere.

dang, that was 7 years ago. whoops.

I never made it far in this game. I gotta play it again!

I can't believe I wrote all that shit about this game. I remember almost none of it.

I was out of work in 2009 and played a LOT of 16-bit stuff.

I am assuming the one vs one battles scale up the more you level up your powered gear stats.  Compared to the long play vid on youtube where the cpu just seems to stand there mine just pulls out the special attack every moment..

When the opponent does his special attack on you your PG just freezes for a few seconds and that's when he can do about 60% damage in one go!

Sadly I don't have a shield in my inventory and none of the shops sell it or health units at the moment in the current area of the game.
IMG

exodus

I totally don't remember. I'll try to play a bit next week and catch up here!

SavagePencil

Wait, I thought shields showed up at one of the first towns?  Or did you lose it?

Its cool boss is done.  Once you do a small quest to retrieve something I think was called a GPR you get 3000 money and then some of the shops reopen and you can buy health units and weapons.
