@GTV reviews the Cosmic Fantasy 1-2 Switch collection by Edia, provides examples of the poor English editing/localization work. It's much worse for CF1. Rated "D" for disappointment, finding that TurboGrafx CF2 is better & while CF1's the real draw, Edia screwed it up...

Hey guys, I know I've been a stranger but I have been trying to lurk!  Work has been keeping me full time busy.

Anyway, I recently got the bug to buy some DS games, but I'm wondering about two:  Castlevania and Ghost Trick, particularly Ghost Trick.  The weird thing about that one was the cover art was inserted upside down and then it was shrinkwrapped that way (non-factory, do it yourself with your home shrinkwrapping machine looking shrinkwrap).  Other than that I just don't see anything else suspicious looking.  Castlevania was also new, had a Y-fold shrinkwrap, and all the manuals and papers (I think).  What weirds me out about that one are the english/french/spanish stuff on the front and back cover which is strange for a US release.  When you start the game you can also choose between french or english.  Was that in the original release in the US?

They are legit seeming enough that I shouldn't care or worry, but I know they were popular games and I got "new" copies off of amazon sellers pretty easily so I thought they might be booties.  Only have a regular DS lite to test with, I heard that a DSi and 3DS would help to test since they might not boot in those if they are bootlegs.  If anyone has any other tips to figure it out, I'd love to hear them.  The cart stickers, manual quality, embossed nintendo logos in the plastic and everything are good.  Serial numbers match everywhere on the box and cart.

For the rest of you, here is a drawing of an anime nurse that came with the Eyeshield 21.  I guess the seller is an aspiring manga artist!

New rules!!!

So just to give this a kick in the pants, I'm instituting a deadline of 2/10/18 (That's two Saturdays from now, I'll take every entry up until midnight if it's an issue).

The new deal is that even if only one proper entry is received, they will become the de facto winner.  That means that anyone entering anything even moderately resembling a fighting game winning quote will get it.  (You must meet the other requirements below, also).  If I get more than one, I'll proceed normally with a poll.  If no one enters by the above date, then I'll shelve the contest for another time.  So if you want it, if you're the only entrant, you win!  (For the record, as I am posting this there are no valid entries)

-----

Hey guys (and gals),

I had the good fortune to win a raffle for Street Fighter II some time back from xcrement5x.  I've had my time with it and I'd like to pass on it to the next challenger.  It's a loosie, but plays great even without the box!

IMG

Rules:
1.) Be a member in good standing here at PCEFX. (Post more than I do lately, for example.)  Have at least 200 posts where you were participating in conversations and not just buying and selling.
2.) Keep in the family, no running off to Ebay.  Raffle it again for someone else here when you part ways with it.
3.) OK, so it's not really a raffle.  I want all participants to come up with their funniest winning quote i.e. "Go home and be a family man."  When we have enough entrants, I am going to post a poll in this thread and PCEFX will decide which is the funniest one.  If there's a tie I'll break it with a randomizer.
4.) Shipping is on me for USA and Canada entrants.  Other countries, you cover shipping.
5.) Go!

We got the worst USA art ever.

At least CF2's is sort of funny.  It looks like a 12 year old drew it, but it's at least... accurate still?
DE is so painfully generic but now when I look at it I wonder if it was more ineptitude or rather some misguided attempt at evoking cubism?  Whether or not the style was intentional, it doesn't get me pumped for exploring dungeons.

So I have two Dengeki G's Engine issues I really don't have much need/want for:

Issue #2 (7/1996) and Issue #7 (12/1996)

IMG

Was thinking $20 for the pair, if you're interested let me know.  They are in good shape but have some wear to them, I think one from December 96 has a crease on the corner of the front. Just the books, though they do each still have the "18+" supplements to them as well which look like the last picture below inside the magazine.  Each magazine is just under 200 pages in length.

Would it be possible to simply scan cover+table of contents + any PCFX coverage?

So I can add it to this:

...and possibly to this:

https://archives.tg-16.com/Dengeki_PC_Engine_Magazine.htm

:)
I'd love to just have a stack of these to look through.  I have a single PCEngineFan from back in the day, wish I'd picked up more.

I actually opened my SS package on Xmas morning, but since we're visiting family down in TN I haven't got a chance to post yet.  Sorry for the delay, SS!  I am the very happy recipient of a Gomola Speed and Avenue Pad 6 so I can finally play SF2 properly!  I'm also gonna have to investigate getting a few more fighting games to use with it.  And I actually really wanted Gomola Speed, but didn't explicitly ask for it, so that's a great surprise too.  Here are some pictures of the festive turbob wrapping paper and goodies inside:

Holy crap!  So I got Medic's package in the mail today and it weighed A METRIC ASS TON!  I seriously had no idea what to expect.  So here's what I found in there:

IMG
IMG

16 friggin volumes of the walking dead!  No wonder it was so heavy!!

So Medic - you really nailed it with this package.  RotLD is one of my favorite horror movies, to the point where pre-dvd I went through some semi-professional bootleg service to get a copy (it was really hard to find at one point) on VHS.  I think there was a laserdisc version, but I never owned a LD player and i think even that was a little hard to come by.  Eventually the DVD came out and I nabbed one pretty much immediately.  I'm really curious to see if the Blu Ray has any cool new special features on it!  And another re-watch is imminent of course.

As for the walking dead, I have been following the main show and always wanted to read the comics.  I have yet to, so this is pretty amazing.  I totally did not expect this, so I will definitely read them in short order!

Haven't seen all the Child's Play movies either, so that should be an interesting watch.  Thanks again man, it really is Halloween in December now!

Quote from: SignOfZeta on 07/07/2016, 08:16 PMI used tapes for the PET and VIC20 (at school) but only floppies for C64 at home.

I've also never seen a legit retail piece of C64 software except for a cartridge a guy I know had...it was pirate city.
I know you are saying this tongue-in-cheek probably, but I still can't resist a little show and tell for one of my favorite and formative video game platforms.  I had a ton of pirate stuff too, notably my two favorite games, Lazy Jones and Impossible Mission, were both copied floppies.  And all my stuff was on 5-1/4" floppy, but I did get a tape drive from my Grandparents who must have bought into the C64 early on.  They only had a couple tapes for it, I've never personally used it myself but I have it around here.  One day I might experiment with it.  Running software from cassette tape must have been such a small window in the USA, and I think I pretty much missed it.

IMG

I used to have boxes for Pool of Radiance along with the manuals and log entry book, sadly they have disappeared somewhere along the way.  I did buy the gold box collection for PC for cheap one day and got a big replacement booklet, so it's not a total loss.  Used to have a boxed Cosmic Relief too, god knows where the stuff went to.  Guess it happens when you are a kid and parents or siblings might trash it when you aren't looking.  I was so proud to beat that game finally.  I think it was called Terramex in the UK.

Edit:  Also picked up Downwell and Sanctuary RPG: Black Edition on Steam today for peanuts.  A couple days ago I also got Pinball Arcade season 3 and Lakeview Cabin Collection.  Pretty happy with all of them.

Downwell:

Japanese developed action game, you drop down a well and shoot things with your rocketboots.  There's shops with upgrades and you try to get as far as you can.

IMG

Sanctuary RPG:

ASCII character based RPG, looks pretty slick to me.  I love stuff like this.

IMG

Lakeview Cabin Collection:

Spent the most time on this one so far, I love it though.  Basically little 70's-80's horror movie vignettes where you have to solve puzzles and run away from the killers.  If you're a fan of this stuff it is totally worth the sale price of $2.49.

I picked these up yesterday:

IMG

$5 for Dexterity and $19.99 for CV II, probably the most I've paid for a used game in a while (or a new one.)  Labels are in nice enough condition, though the store I bought it from had the nasty habit of sticking price stickers on top of the labels.  Passed on a few games I would have otherwise wanted because the risk was too great.

Speaking of anime, and sorry if I missed another thread about it, but has anyone seen the new Voltron on Netflix yet?  I watched a bit of it and it's not bad but IMO they dropped the ball on the music.  No sign of the original theme I loved so much as a kid, now it's semi-generic sorta fantasy/movie type stuff.  They also made a Pidge into a girl.  I don't know why but that upsets me, but it does! I guess I just don't like the source material tampered with too much.  On the upside they got that guy who played the manager from Flight of the Conchords and the werewolf leader from What We Do in the Shadows to be the voice of Coran, which is sweet.  Princess is no longer white bread, I guess your mileage may vary on that.  I wasn't too bothered by it but again I prefer the original models.  Looks like a design more out of Lunar or similar (has more of a 90's-ish feel than an 80's one to me).  The lions looked a little more menacing in the original, I think, which is preferable to me.  Voltron's design is mostly the same though I think it was missing the crest on it's chest and the star belt.  Biggest change that I noticed was in the face.  The new one is more squared off and has a frown.  I kinda prefer the DSL of the original, plus I love that 70's/80's/Giant Robot/Glam Rock look it had going on.  None of that remains.  The Robeasts so far have been alright, no complaints, feels like daikaijuu stuff which I like.  They used to get dropped off in giant coffins (awesome) and now it's a box and sorta coffin shaped but a little less descript.

I read a few reactions online and it seems like a few people are disappointed in the joining sequence.  I think it's mostly the same but the key element again was the music for me, and with that missing it doesn't have the same feel.  They also cut the "dynatherms connected/megathrusters are go/etc/and I'll form the head" stuff which I always thought was pretty awesome.  The majority of the other comments were from those freaks who want to make the characters into yaoi couples. (Same people ruining Fire Emblem (devs included)).  They scare me, so that's all I saw.

Overall, there is a bit more depth to the writing so it has that over in the original in most cases (except for pidge!) and it's probably worth a look if you were ever a fan of the original.

Yeah, I was talking about these kits.  You can of course link them together or even get larger backplates officially to do more resolute pieces, but I like the 16x16 ones, they fit nicely at CD jewel case height on my shelf.  Google the term lego mosaic to see some crazy huge and detailed pieces that have been made by others.

I used to buy them thinking it'd help for my jobs, but they wound up just sitting around and most learning was forced on-the-fly from the Internet or others. ;) I have found my Intel x86 Assembly book still useful in recent years though.
Did my stint as a Linux (and Irix) Sysadmin and mostly just used them to reference certain things now and then, especially the DNS/Bind since I worked for a webhost during the dotcom boom.  Sitting on top of those and unpictured is my O'Reilly Vi Editor pocket reference!  I had a little bit of a fetish for collecting O'Reilly books back in the 90's.  My programming skills are pretty weaksauce but I have always been interested in learning aspects of programming ever since C-64 Basic and the Qbasic days.  Quite of a few of those books I have rescued from friends or elsewhere because I just enjoy technology books in general.  I got this amazing Doozy when we cleaned out my Grandma's house not too long ago, check it out:

They are 16x16 so I had to do something small, but even after overcoming that issue the real problem is the lack and amount of specific colors.  I need to get some flesh tone pieces from Lego's pick a brick store to really get it right!  Trying to also find something I can do with my other 16x16 mosaic back, has to be something really small like an icon or graphic from a status bar, a powerup or other item, or you tell me!  I was going to do Bomberman but I ran out of colors for that too.  If I find the right thing I will put in an order for more bricks.

Ok, here's the deal.  Instead of the usual raffle, I'm going to give you the chance to earn the following:

IMG

IMG

Prerequisites for entering: 100 posts.

This is a two part challenge.  For the first part, I've made a playlist of audio clips from PCE and TG-16 games.  You will need to identify which games these clips are from.  Some will be easier than others, I did that on purpose.  Hopefully it's not too easy though!

For the second part, you will need to take the first letter from each of those titles and write them down somewhere.  Now, unscramble these letters to form an obey related phrase.  There shouldn't be any confusion about the titles I've chosen, but bear in mind the US title always takes precedence over the Japanese one.  Example:  If what you hear is Bonk's Adventure, then you will write down a "B."  It won't be "P" for PC Genjin.  So if it came out in the US, use that name.

First person to PM me the correct phrase wins the Power Golf 2 pictured above!  DO NOT POST ANSWERS IN THE THREAD.  Just PM me when you have it.  If you want to play along but don't want the game, just PM and tell me so along with your guess and I'll give you credit for finding it first. (Next in line with the correct guess will get the game).  After we have a winner I'll reveal what the games and phrase were. (Can we spoiler tag here?  If so I'll do that with the answers)

To make this fair, I'm going to wait until Saturday, Feb. 13th at 1:00 PM (Eastern USA Time) to post the clips.  That way everybody has had some warning and you can all start at the same time, plus it will give me a chance to clarify any rules in the meantime.

Good luck peeps!

Congrats to Black Tiger for cracking the code first!!! =D>

Congrats to sunteam_paul for winning the Power Golf 2! =D>

Answers here!

Click here to see the decoded message received from the Hunting Dog!

P.S., if you are entering from another country, shipping is on you! 8)  I'll ship to anyone in the USA for free.

Ok!  Here is the link to the sound clips:

Good luck!  Later in the day I will check back and provide hints if needed.  P.S. There are 14 tracks.  Soundcloud will continue playing something else when track 14 ends, it's unrelated to the contest.

Normally I'd be more exacting but I gotta run out the door for my date.  I will check on your progress  later on!  I hope it doesn't bother anyone's sense of fairness, sorry about that.  So you get a 10 minute head start if you happen to be here now.

Hints for all tracks:  9 of the 14 games had domestic (US) releases, 5 are PCE only.
Hints for track #1:  Fellow PCEFX'er Bernie might have something to do with this one.  All aboard the Turbob Xpress!  Choo Choo!
Hints for track #2:  Is one of the orange label games.  Features some of the biggest TV stars on the Turbografx-16.  Sorta.  Also known for having censored content.
Hints for track #3:  Often compared to a certain Nintendo title.  The title is four syllables long.  Also has a sequel on the TG-16.
Hints for track #4:  This tune really poisons your heart.  The "designers" who "worked" on this did a really nice job.
Hints for track #5:  This one tried to top the Turbografx-16 charts but found it impossible to do so.  The main character of this series was born in Sheffield, UK.  He didn't get his start on the TG-16.
Hints for track #6:  This game is well known for a having a particular style of music.  The clip used is not an example of this style, however.  Has it's very own VHS tape!
Hints for track #7:  This game took some inspiration from a famous series of movies.  These movies were known in part for showcasing a notable piece of sports equipment.  From a sport well loved in Canada.
Hints for track #8:  Try not to be too sting-y when looking to buy your own copy of this title.  It might the last one available.  You might even wanna set up some E-bay alerts.
Hints for track #9:  Is a port of an arcade game.  The chimps from Project X (1987) would be right at home in this one.  (look up the synopsis if you haven't seen it!).  Do battle on a holodeck!
Hints for track #10:  Power up with Pac-man in this console exclusive (in the 90's) arcade port.  The title starts with a vowel!
Hints for track #11:  Kilroy was here.  This one is a sequel.
Hints for track #12:  #12's protagonists are of a race featured prominently in the works of J.R.R. Tolkien.  And very prominently featured in "The Hobbit." (btw: not Hobbits.)  The title is an example of Japanese onomatopoeia.  One of Bubble Bobble's many cousins.
Hints for track #13:  Features a store with the same moniker as the band who would become New Order.  Contains many references to popular movies of the 1980's.  The man who wrote and directed this game still works in the game industry today.  By a company who can found somewhere in this forum post.
Hints for track #14:  Build up your body and and eat all you can in this one!  Then - surround your enemies to destroy them.

Hints for the secret phrase:  The phrase is three words long.  Part of the phrase comes from one of the TurboDuo pack-in games.  It contains a name.  The name belongs to a certain villain.

Hey guys, I've been wanting to host a raffle for a while, and I realized I have some pretty good games for Steam to pass along.  I'll do some PCE related raffles when I'm able but in the meantime I'd like to offer up these to my forum besties (aka you guys.)

Have at least say... 75 posts of quality forum material (usual "not only in buy/sell threads" yada yada) and just be a likeable sort of person in general.  If you don't meet these requirements, I will accept a plea in the manner of a small essay (long paragraph) on why you want said game so bad.  If it's pretty convincing I'll let you in the raffle.  If you go that route make it entertaining or tell a good anecdote for best results.

Reminder, these are all Steam codes.  I'm doing each game/collection separately, so there will be 4 raffles in the end.  You can enter in any of them you wish, or all of them, just tell me which ones you want in on.  I will pick a winner for each next tuesday.

Winners!:

I'll buy a sealed game if possible every time, but I open them always.  I admit they sometimes sit sealed on my shelf until I'm ready to play them.  But having everything in nice new condition is great, because I know I'll take care of it.  The used game market can be so depressing with all the messed up cartridge stickers, children's names scrawled in marker (or worse, see pic below), missing manuals, missing other stuff like posters, etc.  See my recent unboxing of Cosmotank, my mom found for me for Xmas.  Pretty cool to open a new GB game, got a poster which I'm gonna frame and hang up for cool game room decor.  I've already played it a couple times and I know it will stay in nice condition for as long as the sands of time will let it.  I just think keeping games sealed is a shame.  Of course you can emulate in many cases, but one thing I've found is with an unlimited pool of free games, you tend not to want to play any of them.  If you carefully acquire just the ones you really want one at a time, you will give them a little more love and attention.

I think everyone here is aware of the supply and demand issue concerning classic games.  There's a finite supply and keeping games sealed or worse (VGA graded) relegates them to the status of currency, functionally no different than a $50 or $100 bill, to be passed around and fetishized but never actually used for it's intended purpose.  It's a free market though, and if you buy em' sealed, you're free to display them that way.  I do think there's a degree of fetishism no matter what, I basically described that above.  But get the full use out of your purchase!  It can still be kept in nice condition after opening it.  And emulation isn't the answer for everything.  NEC emulation is pretty good, but I'm sure a few people could point out weird issues with certain games.  Saturn emulation blows.  N64 emulation blows.  Just sayin'.

Man, it's been a long time opening a new GB game for me, I was hit with a massive nostalgia bomb.  This shit even came with a cool poster!  I'm gonna get a frame for it and hang it up, too.  Does anyone have any idea where to score these thin plastic protective boxes?  I kept almost all of my GBA cardboard boxes and three GBC ones, I should do what this seller did and plop them in there.

Quote from: VenomMacbeth on 12/26/2015, 11:06 AMI've not opened all my presents, but so far I've gotten CIB copies of Elemental Gimmick Gear for the Dreamcast, and Alien Soldier for the Mega Drive!  I parted with my repro of that one awhile ago, before prices went crazy, so I wasn't expecting to ever get a legit copy.

Unlike Radiant Silvergun, Alien Soldier is one Treasure game I don't ever see myself getting rid of. :3

Oh, and I also got Season 4 Vol. 2 and Season 5 of The Venture Bros on DVD.  Woot!
Alien Soldier is one of my favorite games of all time.  I got a nice copy years and years ago, and I will definitely never let go of it either.  I hope you can beat your old times on your new copy!  I also love my Radiant Silvergun too though :)  Those are without a doubt the best two Treasure games in my mind, with no disrespect to Guardian Heroes and Gunstar Heroes which are also amazing, as are most of the games they put out.

Necro!  I went to my Mom's house last night and look what she got me:

New!   Wow, it's been a long time since I've seen a sealed in box GB game, like since when I was a kid.  Don't worry though, I'm gonna open er' up.  There's a nice little faux "VGA graded" box on the outside (it's just thin plastic) but I am gonna keep the box in there after opening and playing it.  I should get some of these for my other boxes, so cool!

Wow!  So much greatness!  My girlfriend also wanted to let you know that she loved the candy corn wrapping paper and also - you didn't know this about me yet (or did you...!) but I love old fashioned Christmas candy!   Thank you again bro!

Here's the rest of my haul, future mother in law also got me a Necronomicon Pinball which I've been wanting for a while now.  Brand new!!

I have my GB carts and loose Hueys in a plastic document holder box.  It's damn near perfect height for the GB carts (I have to angle them to get them to fit perfectly, but thats better to rifle through the titles.)  I need to get some of the Hueys some clothes from Seymour Onion, and I am thinking I will eventually buy some repro cases from pcenginefx and labels from Sparky here.

Quote from: Keith Courage on 12/03/2015, 12:59 AMI absolutely love this game and used to play it much with friends back in the day. Just get yourself the best handling and buy a gas tank for when you warp too much from hitting the back of the screen. From there on out you just need to figure out what the best items are to buy in which order. This will ensure you being able to stay fast enough to compete with the computer players.

maybe I like this game because I was a huge fan of Off Road.
I LOVED Off Road in the arcades.  I wasn't the kind of kid who liked cars/nascar stuff naturally, either - but that game was super fun and we had one at a campground I stayed at often.  Dumped a lot of quarters into it.  I think it would be totally worth having a dedicated cabinet for.

I wanna love Moto Roader too, and I'm not gonna give up on it yet (still don't own my own copy really).  I really like the upgrade system, just didn't have it figured out yet.  I wanna get MR2 and MR: MC (which looks more like Super Sprint or Off Road even in that you seen the whole course in one screen) as well.

Also, I dunno what it is about low-rez race girls either, but I love em!  Check out those hips man, must be what, like 12 pixels wide?  Ooh mama.
