Quote from: Ji-L87 on 12/17/2012, 02:47 AMI DO have some problems winning races and drifting tho', anyone got some techniques to share? :)
Here's a few:

Use the manual transmission. The car is a bit faster than the auto version, and most of the stupid driving tricks you can do in the game are easier with the manual.

Drafting (aka slipstreaming) especially in the beginner course, can make you go faster than your top speed. The manual Hornet's top speed is 201 mph, you can go 208 by drafting.

Learn to drift. The last turn in the beginner course is made to teach you how to drift. Two ways to drift: Slam on the brakes and enter the turn, then use the gas to control the rear end, or downshift in the turn. When you get used to it, use both.

Downshift to slow down. This is an arcade racer, you can't blow the engine up overrevving, so if you need to slow down in a hurry, throw it into 3rd and you'll almost instantly be going at 3rd gear's top speed, which is around 170mph. Doing this in straights is pretty safe, but it's dangerous around corners unless you are trying to initiate a drift.

If you have the HD versions, look at the leaderboards and download the videos for the top players. See what they do and do it yourself! The top times use glitches for the best time, but you can still learn something.

If you are playing on Saturn, unlock the orange car and use it. It's not the fastest car, but it's the easiest to drive for a rookie.

Ji-L87

Thanks!
I was already driving with manual transmission (racing games are just more fun that way) but I'll give those methods a try. Cheers! :mrgreen:

I have already watched it twice.
Did he also do "game over yeeeeeeah!"?

I am fairly positive. :)

Joe Redifer

That would indeed be very creepy if it was an American dude singing like that. And yep, Game Over Yeah is him, too!

Quote from: JKMRe: Not being able to hear the voice in Daytona USA HD

The crew chief's voice plays out of the rear speakers on a 5.1 setup. Sounds okay on my setup, although I have the rear speakers turned up a little.
I do play in a 5.1 setup. Actually 7.1. PS3 version is used. Room is set to pink noise at the following levels:

Left = 85db
Center = 85db
Right = 85db
Left Surround = 83db
Left Back Surround = 83db
Right Back Surround = 83db
Right Surround = 83 db
Subwoofer = 95db

That's how I set up real movie theaters so of course I set up my living room the same way. I think maybe Sega just sucks with sound now or I have an option set wrong somewhere.

GohanX

Quote from: Joe Redifer on 12/18/2012, 09:09 PMI think maybe Sega just sucks with sound
This is probably it. The other things that play out of the rear speakers are pretty out of place, it's like dead silence and then NOISE! I do wish it had an option for regular stereo, but I'm not going to reconfigure my 360's audio every time I play Daytona.

Joe Redifer

I was recording in stereo when I made the Game Sack video and it was no different.

Nice! A half hour of Saturn goodness. The Saturn has turned into one of my favorite systems over the last few years. Thanks for the episode, Joe. :D

blueraven

The Saturn is one of those consoles that the owners wish never died.

Kind of like Elvis.

Funny thing is, I remember when Magic Knight Rayearth was on clearance at Software Etc. new for $10. And the feeling of anguish knowing that it was the last title for the system.

Well, watch the next one in a little over a week as it'll have some.

Also, I don't have a working Turbo tap. I took out player 5's DIN to make it into an RGB jack for my for the IFU and now Turbo Tap doesn't want to work with even 2 players.

Already did that in the Gamecube episode.  :)

Joe, I loved that episode. I watched it last night as I ate biscotti and cold coffee at 11:50 pm. :pcgs:

I was not familiar with all the games, which, of course, makes me eager to play them!

Joe Redifer

I'm just amazed that someone saw it over at Retroware TV! It's kind of hard to get views over there because the submission gets hidden really fast.

Yea was watching "The video game years" and it came out on the side bar under related videos. I got lucky because i havent seen it come up again. Seen em all!! Do you guys plan on doing any episodes based on consoles before the 8 bit era?

Man, an SG-1000 episode would be extremely interesting. I have over 20 games for it, and it is a great system for its time.

Joe Redifer

Eventually we'd like to. But first we must procure systems and games.

wallzter

The Sg-1000 should be right up Joe's alley!!!

Heheh, the SG-1000 is very different than Sega's later systems. It's like a ColecoVision, but way more badass. Identical specs, as well. Also somewhat like the MSX, but MSX has a ton of weird computer software. I don't collect MSX.

Joe, if you have any questions about the SG-1000, and what games are easiest to find and fun to play, please PM me. I have a good portion of the system's library of fun, arcade-like games. :)

Pretty good episode. Wish you'd had more games on disk to show off, especially ones which made better use of the FM capabilities. Zelda 2 was a fantastic example, but it looks like you guys try to record from hardware, and I know it can be a pain to get hold of some titles.

Also, a proposed episode idea, something that's had info around on the 'net for a long time but could use the quality Game Sack treatment: JPN vs US releases. Dracula 3 (NES vs FC, imagery and audio comparison), Bare Knuckle series (US vs JPN), etc... Stuff like that could make for a cool episode, especially since you guys do a great job with quality video and audio presentation.

The library of games I have for the FDS are very limited. Wish I had more to send, especially FM capable disks. Though as I have said to Joe I enjoy the NES/Famicom's standard PSG more than the FM. There is just something warmer about the PSG that makes it more listenable. The same can't be said with the Master System's FM. It rocks!

I am glad Drill Dozer had a mention. Curiously, there are parts of the game that remind me of Air Zonk of all things. Once you power up your drill to level 3 the music changes (there is different music for the other levels too) and the tune sounds like something out of Air Zonk. The blue level complete sequence (I think that is what I am thinking of) looks like Zonk's with it's blue bubbly scrolling background. Very interesting.

Yeah, never heard of this one before but it seemed very interesting, the sprite animation seemed rocking and the rumble feature amusingly silly.

Edit: Just did a quick search for what a boxed copy goes for and stumbled over one of those VGA graded ones. $80 plus shipping, now ain't that a steal :lol:  #-o

Drill Dozer is a pretty inexpensive game, that price is stupid. Everyone with a GBA should have it.

Over at TNL for a while we kept grabbing clearance copies at Walmart or wherever for like $7 and shipping them to other members for free, because EVERYONE should have Drill Dozer.

Jossshhhhh...Legendary TurboTrollX-16: He revenge-bans PCE Developers/Ys IV Localizers from PCE Facebook groups and destroyed 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Josh and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together! Thunduur Bladers!!!! Thanks Joe for finally covering this excellent SEGA masterpiece (in the arcade anyway). You mirrored my thoughts on the arcade game word for word. It was my favorite arcade game growing up and it still is. I was understandably let down by the domestic home versions but I gleamed every last ounce of enjoyment out of them back in the 80s. The SMS version's cave environs were a test of reflexes to say the least. And I would even enjoy the build-up to each stage on the Genesis version. I beat both many times. Love this game more than it is healthy! :D

Not going to lie - I was pumped to get my Thunderblade arcade machine, then horrified when i realized that I have no more nostalgia for the game :) It's a technical marvel for sure, but man it controls like dogshit. It went to a good home though - the guy I sold it to is doing a full resto on it.

I always thought I had a good handle on the arcade's controls. I could even land on the roofs of buildings during both overhead and behind-the-shoulder sections in the first stage. :)
