There seems to be a whole lot of hate on this forum for everdrives/cdrs?
I personally can't see the problem with playing on an everdrive or cdr, it's not like I'm taking the food out of someones mouth for something they have created, buying an original copy of any pc engine game is not going to put any money into the hands of the publisher/developer anymore.
I don't give one about packaging or having a shelf of full of stuff particularly, but I do like to play pc engine games on original hardware and on CRT, whether the software is original or not is only a means to the end of actually playing the game for me.

Psycho Punch

Piracy is still piracy but it's not like the companies responsible for the games profit any longer with those privately traded copies. It's not a big deal if done privately (i.e. don't sell bootlegs or exchange it for goods)

too each his own. I love to play all my originals, because behind every game there is a small personal story, and that isn't just how I DLed it from the I-net and put it on a SD card.

The problem with such discussions is that the word piracy is being used for an umbrella terms for all sorts of practices and motives that are very diverse and often unrelated. To name a few: for-profit counterfeiting, personal backups, digital preservation and conservation of software, abandonware and unclaimed IP, translation projects, ability to flash/emu unaffordable/hacked/unreleased titles, etc.

I think you will find that the issue is not as simple as "all piracy is wrong".

Everyone here draws boundaries differently.

Where do you draw the line?

Do you pirate current games made in the last 10 years? 5 years?

Movies?

Software?

The reason "piracy" is so controversial is that there are so many factors, depending on any given scenario, to consider.

If you think pcefx hasn't argued endlessly about this...then you haven't been here long.

I started the topic knowing it was poking a hornets nest but only meant with regards to pc engine software, of course it is everyones own moral choice about how they live now with movies, software etc...
I haven't posted much on here but have lurked a fair bit, it's a great place for knowledge of the system but I have noticed many times when isos & roms are mentioned that it has been seen as something unspeakable.
I'm interested to hear to what other people feel, I'm not trying to make myself feel at ease playing games that I haven't paid for ;)
For me bootlegs are the biggest pile of crap ever, the cost of buying something legit but it being exactly the same as pirating it in the first place, completely worthless imo I'd rather have a cdr...

>too each his own. I love to play all my originals, because behind every game there is a small personal story, and that isn't just how I DLed it from the I-net and put it on a SD card.
Most of the time I look at games I bought 15-20 years ago I think damn it was expensive even then ;)

If there was a way to buy the games for a reasonable price that meant some of the $$$ would go to the original creators I would...
But even when I bought a pc engine with splatterhouse back in '91 it was from a kid in my class... he got the profit from me, his folks had bought it from an import shop who had bought it from HK (it was PAL RF modded shudder) so the 'official' sales channels were already way out of the link already, the people responsible for the content had already had their cut on the first original sale in Japan...

Gotcha :)

I believe, fundamentally, that the most important thing is for folks to enjoy/appreciate video games.

I don't really care what folks do, as long as they keep it private and aren't trying to be a profiteer.

I actually do not mind reproductions (I understand the appeal) as long as original carts/cases are not sacrificed en masse (to the point of extinction, so to speak).

PERSONALLY:

I do NOT think that we are entitled to anything we want simply because we want it. There are literally thousands of amazing games available to most folks at nominal cost. We should enjoy those games and be content.

Of course, some games are difficult to obtain, either  due to genuine rarity or price. This scenario generates a lot of controversy. Ha! As long as folks are not trying to profit, I understand the desire to play ISO/ROM. I'm never going to pay $$$$ for Terra Cresta II. I will not die if I don't play it. If I do play the ROM, I am aware of the decision I made and the moral implications (let's be honest, an increasingly large number of games are becoming valuable IP once again...ha! Who would have thought it would happen...but Steam, Virtual Console, mobile ports, etc. etc.)

Alt-Nintega

I just made 100 CD copies and 300 cassette copies of Miley Cyrus new album and I sold them for 25 cents a piece to the local kids. I also printed 100 posters of Miley butt naked with a dildo in her butt, and I sold those for $1 a pop. Not even 1 thing I did was an act of piracy and no one cared or gave a shit, even the cops bought a few items.

Moral of the story. Anyone can make an Everdrive and sell it to whoever they want, and they will never get into trouble.

It's not piracy.

If it were really Hailing the pictures of Miley would have a cat up her butt, or Miley drawn as a cat with Bailey Jay up her ass or something.

though I'd like to support game developers for the games I really love... I've always bought my games used or just straight pirated. So hard to justify buying a game for more than 20$ nevermind 60+. And paying for software emulation of older games on newer consoles just seems so backwards

wildfruit

I only download games that I believe are realistically not making the owner money any more or sometimes things that never made it to PAL land. Never torrented a movie or anything like that. If it's good enough to watch films are cheap enough to buy. I do like to cache video game music from youtube though. Saves streaming it a million times

There doesn't seem to me to be much hate for the concept of piracy on here.  Instead, it's frowned upon to actually discuss how/where to get stuff for free online and I find it hard to disagree both with that policy as well as the pcenginefx users willingness to abide by it.

This is a gaming website, not a piracy website.  You have to draw the line somewhere and not allowing discussion on acquiring roms/isos keeps the site safe and keeps it from becoming another internet cesspool.

Yarr, I don't see much hate for piracy either.  There's hate for Tobias's pricey bootlegs, lengthy discussions about whether or not CDRs hurt blazing lazers, and lulz at that goober that tried to sell CDRs as a "backup service"; otherwise nobody gives much of a fuck.

What sucks about Tobias was that he was a fucking lying scammer. He had produced good quality Sapphire boots. Priced at like $30-40 a pop they would have sold on their own merit without him lying and shit, but he was greedy. At least he doesn't lie about his stuff being legit copies now, but the greed is still there with those high prices.

The only positive to the guy is his stuff is produced at high quality. If the stuff he had put out in those box sets of his were done by anyone else with a better rep, and priced better, no one would really give a flying fuck. Most of the IP Tobias is reproducing as is, is Konami's, and they seem to not give a rats ass about much of anything anymore outside of gambling wares and fitness centers and Metal Gear Solid games.
