@GTV reviews the Cosmic Fantasy 1-2 Switch collection by Edia, provides examples of the poor English editing/localization work. It's much worse for CF1. Rated "D" for disappointment, finding that TurboGrafx CF2 is better & while CF1's the real draw, Edia screwed it up...

Quote from: zetastrike on 06/16/2018, 02:04 PMI ordered mine last week.  Should be arriving on Monday or Tuesday.  I don't know why people are getting so worked up about a buzz during card access or some video noise.  I'm really pumped to get it.
It's not even a problem anymore. A really easy fix was posted online for that. All you need to do is solder a capacitor to the underside of your board and it resolves everything. I already performed the mod and now there is no noise at all anymore.
#2
@Kavas: I have the latest revision of this device (V3, which is V2 with a reversed cap). While I can confirm that I do hear slight noise while the SD card is being accessed, it isn't very loud in my opinion and goes away when you start playing games. I am however using a Core Grafx and not a white PCE, so that may be a contributing factor.

I do know that when using a White PCE (when I had one) with my briefcase and Framemeister setup, I had a bunch of issues with it. Mainly video noise/sync and other problems. All of them went away when I moved to a Core Grafx, or Core Grafx II. Coupled with the Core Grafx jailbar fix, the picture looks pretty flawless.

Horror Story is also an expensive game now.

I'm surprised more people don't know about the ROM ROM amp. I guess my only question would be (never owning one before): How does the quality compare to a regular amp/speaker setup?

I know sometimes older equipment are made to way better standards than newer stuff (made with cheaper parts, etc), so it would be interesting to know how these are built!

I can sympathise with peoples feelings, but if collecting makes him happy I can't really argue with that. He has just as much a right to disagree with us, as we have a right to disagree with him.

Side topic: I assume collecting sealed Hu Cards is a terribly risky proposition. The vinyl sleeves would almost certainly be melted on the plastic. In addition, I've found that removing the sleeve sometimes takes part of the artwork/paint with it. :/ You'd probably want to open the games and remove the sleeves as soon as possible. But that's just me.

Quote from: guest on 02/09/2018, 12:04 PMThe upper grafx is unpolished and lazily engineered. I mean WTF?

I'm still waiting for the GDEmu guy's version of the CD hardware emulator.

Universal Serial Bus. :P
Lol. My bad :-) What I meant to imply is that it behaves very unlike most USB mass storage devices.
#8
Quote from: guest on 02/08/2018, 10:51 PMI thought that the big problem with the Upper Grafx is that it essentially drops a frame?
I was under the same impression. Via the conversion process to HDMI, the device has to drop a frame to keep sync. So they need to use special filtering or interpolation to try and hide the judder. It's nice that it supports HDMI, but there are other line doublers/upscaler devices which do this way better.

To be honest, while I applaud the work they did, I don't think it's an SSS3 killer/replacement. Everything they did seems to feel like a compromise. For example, they got CD-ROM images working, but they support only the strange formats no one uses. To select a CD-ROM image you need to use the CD Player, because they were too lazy to make a proper menu. For SD card support, rather than work with a real file system (Fat32, etc), they just made the SD card blank with no file system (So you can't use it like a standard memory card. Ie. to erase an item, you need to delete everything past that item in sequence. Lord help you if the game you want to delete is at the start of your SD card!). To transfer files, you get a USB port, but it's treated like a classic serial port (Need special drivers/software that they provide)

The list of compromises just goes on. :-/

I assume in the Super SD System 3, the extra ram is always available (visible to software) regardless of which BIOS you load? <Crosses Fingers>.
#10
Quote from: guest on 02/02/2018, 01:47 PMThey've said that Games Express games work the same as all CD games. Select the appropriate system card in the options and play as usual.

I'm no GE expert, but isn't there basically just their equivalent of CD2 and SCD system cards? You don't need to worry about the Duo/Super CD-ROM-only games, which you can't play with an IFU or Turbo CD combo.
Ah, I was under the impression that it had the extra memory on board the system already. If it doesn't, then those games are not relavent anyways.
#11
So apparently this device works with Game Express titles (as explained by the makers on another forum), but they didn't really touch on how this works. I assume it involves you loading the BIOS images from SD card, and then the device simulates the extra RAM found in DUO systems.

Does anyone know if all the Game Express BIOS cards have been dumped yet? I know there are multiple versions of this card, so you kind of need to match the game with the card?

Quote from: NightWolve on 02/01/2018, 08:12 PMSSD3 didn't go for that final touch to supply YPbPr/Component output for most US TV sets, it's geared to Europe in the RGB regard. Even then, a % of YPbPr TV sets need you to double the resolution to 480p or it won't work and you'll have to switch down to crappy Composite (they always still take 240p in Composite jack).

Anyway, they're both great products and I look forward to seeing how much these teams advance. Just making my preference known.
I agree, it would have been nice if they went the extra mile. I suspect that most people who use RGB mods have upscalers already, so it won't be as bad a hit to them.

In regards to the UperGrafx, it looks like an interesting device but I feel (in my opinion) that it's still kind of premature. I'm not sure if they were able to address the frame rate issues (judder) and from what I read about version 2, it seems like preparing CD-ROM games is quite involved. Specifically because they decided to cut corners on it's implementation (Ie. USB port treated like a serial port, SD card written RAW without file system, proprietary tool to write CD-ROM images to SD card, Odd CD-ROM image support, etc.
#13
How much did it run you if I might ask? Hopefully you got a good deal!
#14
I doubt it. If what people say is true, I think everyone is sitting on the sidelines because it's likely that he already found a buyer for the console (at an inflated price) before he even has one in hand. So that's why at this point, he's willing to pay just about *anything* to get one. As long as it's not super unreasonable, he'll still turn a profit. At least that's what people are *probably* thinking anyways given his reputation.

Hi everyone,

I have for sale a pair of Brooks PS4/PS3 to NEO•GEO Super Converter [USB to DB15] adapters (Brand New). [ON HOLD]

IMG

Turns out I didn't need these, so I never bothered to open them. With an updated firmware patch, you can change the default button mappings for these converters to pretty much all the standard Neo Geo setups.

Asking only $70 for the pair + shipping (Essentially $19.98 off retail!). Payment can be made via PayPal!

Thanks!

Hi Everyone,

So the other day I was playing Chew Man Fu with a friend and he managed to collect over 99 diamonds. So as a result, he was offered to cash them in for a special bonus game at the end of the round. Except the old man said something like "Hold top left and push I" to start the bonus round. So he did it, but it didn't really do anything and he lost all his diamonds.

Has anyone else seen this before? Do they know what is supposed to happen when you cash in 99 diamonds?

Quote from: guest on 05/22/2017, 09:21 PMAbout teh rar3z: Who the hell wants to genuinely play "The TV Show" so bad? That's right: no one. And that goes for a lot of tobias'd titles
Lol, I admit "The TV Show" was a bad example, but some games like Dracula X and Gozaru are legitimately enjoyably titles. (^_^); But as a whole, yes rare games don't usually deserve the asking price being commanded.  Unless your a hardcore fan, "Good" or even "Excellent" doesn't mean $200+ "Good" or "Excellent".
#19
I don't envy people who want to find legitimately rare PC-Engine titles these days. Before when you wanted legit copies of "The TV Show" or "Bazaru de Gozaru", it would take a while for them to appear, but when they did they were authentic. Now markets are flooded with semi-honest (?) listings that say their copies are the new 2016 pressings from Germany, or just outright false with no warning at all (except for the expert collector who can spot them).

For example, this guy selling "The TV Show" sealed. But don't worry! It's not hand made! It's a 100% custom designed one from 2016, made in Germany. At 100%+ markup to boot! :/

http://www.ebay.com/itm/SEALED-The-Tv-Show-for-PC-Engine-Turbografx-Turbo-DUO-/182496134350?hash=item2a7d9e04ce:g:aAQAAOSw2gxYz0Ua

I think most of the old timers here already have these rare titles, but for the new guy getting into the PC-Engine, it's probably going to be a rough ride (Especially with speculators driving the price up for all things retro game).

Hi everyone,

Nothing too glamorous, but I have for sale some Neo Geo MVS cartridges. Condition ranges from ok to well used (Arcade carts after all). They are as follows:

Originals:
Thrash Rally ($35) (PENDING)
King of Fighters 98 ($50)
King of Fighters 2001 ($25)
Samurai Shodown II (Repo label - $35)
Samurai Shodown III (Repo label - $40)

Bootlegs:
King of Fighters 2003 ($40)
SNK vs Capcom Chaos Super Plus (Special ver that has all the secret chars unlocked! - $40)

OR $200 for everything (Savings of $65 USD)

All games tested, with exception to the Samurai Showdown games which I had trouble inserting into my system. They worked before, so I assume all that's required is just a board alignment/re-seating. Payment via PayPal + shipping (USD).

Cheers,

Quote from: Pokun on 03/10/2017, 02:54 AMI think the virgin Ten no Koe BANK just means Box 4 has to be empty, not that it never has been used.
I agree with this. From a product standpoint, there are too many usability issues with having it work any other way. For example, what if the user has save data already on that partition? Do you just overwrite it? Do you prompt the user to back it up first? It sounds like the easiest fix (with the least amount of work) would be to simply check that it's empty before allowing the code to proceed.

In my humble opinion, PCE > NES port of DD2. The reason being, the PCE port is just more capable. More colors, CD Quality music, intros and cut-scenes, etc. It's not that the NES port is bad, it's just that it's hamstrung by the physical limitations of the NES. Had the PCE port been butchered, like the game Golden Axe for example, then I'd agree the NES version wins hands down.

There are literally 100s of sellers pushing PC-Engine/TG16 games on eBay already. We all know this. If we wanted to buy from eBay, we would have done so already without your "prompting" us. It's not as if your 100 games suddenly changed the eBay landscape, so we better act fast and take a look.

How about, you know... contributing to the forums/community first rather than looking at us like we're stool pidgins ready to be fleeced out of their money.

EDIT: And FML you even posted in the *wrong* forum section. You literally were in such a hurry to promote your eBay sales, you posted to the PC-FX forum instead of the proper one. <slow clap>

Hi everyone,

I have for sale a PC-Engine Core + 4 games!

IMG

I got this as a spare unit, but I realized that I have way too many "spare" units as it is. :) This system comes bare as you see it, but also includes 4 HuCard games complete in cases.

Note: Due to the age of these games, some of the spine labels show slight signs of pealing/wear. It's rather minor in my opinion (a little glue would put them back in place), but I thought I would mention it all the same to be complete.

Asking $89.99 USD + shipping. Payment via PayPal.

Cheers!

PC-Engine DUO-R (SOLD)

IMG

Ah, another spare unit that has to go! I got this as one of my numerous 'backup' consoles, but I never got around to modding it for RGB output or anything fancy like that. I specifically picked this up since the condition it was in was excellent! It has no yellowing of any kind, and from what I tested, the CD-ROM works great too (Edit: I should preface that these are drives are pretty old, so a little re-calibration tuning is likely in order regardless). I essentially power it up, played it for a few minutes, then packed it back up. It's been sitting in storage ever since. Comes with one game, and game pad. This unit doesn't come with cables or a power supply, but they are easy to come by. In addition, the power supply for these things are pretty darn heavy, so buying one locally would be much more affordable than trying to ship one anyway.

Well, that's about all I have for sale right now. If your interested in any of these, please do feel free to shoot me a PM. Shipping cost per item will depend on the buyers location. Payment can be made by PayPal.

Cheers,

This is just personal preference, but I found FreeBasic to be a good alternative for people looking to learn programming. It has most of the major features you'd want in a learning language, and it also cross-compiles easily in DOS, Windows, and Linux. It's nice being able to write your code once and have it work all over. But that's just me!
#32
Although I could buy a 100% working fully refurbished RGB modded Duo for cheaper, I can't resist a good free raffle. Please enter me!
#33
Given that it appears quite evident that someone before you tried to open the console and fiddle with it (unskillfully), I'd sooner assume they were the ones who somehow caused the problem. I've never heard of RAM chips leaking anything like that, so I would assume a 3rd party did it.
#34
Quote from: mickcris on 08/31/2016, 07:18 PMThe device is pretty cool though.  But, like others have said, the price is too high.  Maybe they will lower the price if it doesn't sell well.
Ya, they would need to reduce the price by a significant amount since their only customer base would be people who just want 'good enough' quality at 'impulse buy' prices. Considering it costs pretty much the same as a Framemister, there is virtually no reason to choose this over it. The reason being, the Framemister was designed specifically for quality upscaling, has a company dedicated to it's development and backing, and has already gone through multiple hardware versions/generations trying to perfect their product.

I'm not saying it's impossible, but it's very unlikely that some (relatively) random nobodies would come by and do a better job than a company who spent years designing and maintaining their 'killer-app' upscaler product.

08/30/2016, 09:41 AM
Ok, so now that everyone is battling it out, does anyone care to share any tips on how they are dealing with weight loss? Was it mostly just cutting back on the kinds of food you ate, or was it more to do with being active?
#36
I would agree with CrackTiger. Just modify your console for JPN-21 RGB out, then get yourself a Framemister. Not only will the quality be perfect, you'll be able to reuse the upscale on any RGB source you want.

Generally speaking, for tools I usually use FOSS before anything else. So rather than learn a proprietary piece of software like Photoshop, I naturally prefer to use GIMP instead. The same goes for office productivity software. Even if the license for MS Office only costs like $13 (Company Discount), I'd prefer to use LibreOffice and not vender-lock myself in. It's especially true these days given how many FOSS is equal to, or better than the pay alternatives.

Hey everyone,

Speaking for myself, and perhaps a load of others, I have a fond attachment to the pcenginefx community. Having visited for such a long time, I see regular faces who continue to show up and chat about everything (The good, the bad, and the new)! But after a while I started thinking... Sure the PC-Engine community is alive and well, there are probably other obscure or lesser known Asian platforms/games/hardware that don't get a lot of coverage. So much so that maybe some of the knowledge we have now, might get lost in the future as 'old-timers' retire from the scene and head out to greener pastures.

So after having that thought, I decided to parlay my computer experience and start my own website dedicated to preserving Asian retro gaming! While not nearly as specific as the pcenginefx forums, it covers a much larger area of Asian retro gaming which I feel is under-represented online (At least in English speaking corners). Being that I'm not really aware of many centralized places for English speakers to get this kind of information, I figure this would as good a time as any to start. :-) I know not everyone will care about the greater retro gaming scene outside of the PC-Engine, but my door is always open for those who are.

Cheers!

PS: Since I literally only opened my doors a short while ago, there is still a lot of content left to be added. I did manage to get a few PC-Engine scans in the download section up. You'll need to be registered and have at least 50 posts to really be able to start downloading stuff, but that's really more to stop hit-and-runs. If anyone has scans, files, or anything else they think would be worthy to contribute to the archive, please do feel free to let me know!

The game looks very nice!

Will more animations be added to the main character sprite in the future? I noted that she kind of jumps and moves like a stick figure. If you added more frames of animation to cover jumping, turning from one direction to another, etc, you could probably get it looking very smooth. I'm sure it's probably just a place-holder, but I figured I'd ask anyway just in case. :-) Good work!

Quote from: guest on 07/21/2016, 03:08 PMThis is cool and all, but it's a bummer that it's for IFUs only.

Though lots more work and cost, the best solution would be a replacement for both the drive and the IFU.  A robot can dream.
I was under the impression that this didn't need an IFU. All you need is a base PCE system that has a proper EXT port.

EDIT: Bah nevermind, I think this will indeed require an IFU. When I think about all the extra hardware the IFU provides, like save ram, SCSI like interface, etc, it would be a lot of work to replicate it.
#41
Thanks everyone. How likely do you think this is a power supply issue? The reason I ask is because it's the easiest thing to fix/replace. All the other fixes would involve me opening the unit and performing some modifications which I have no equipment/skill for.
#42
Hey everyone,

When modifying an IFU-30A for RGB output, is there anything inherent about the hardware that would limit the quality of video being generated? I know the jail bar fix has to be applied to the actual PCE console itself, but would anything else cause an issue?

The reason I ask is because I have a PCE Core 2, modified with RGB out and jailbar fix and it looks flawless on my framemister. However, when that same console is placed inside an IFU-30A and I use the RGB out on that device (Which was modded by a different person), I get OK RGB out, but you can clearly see what looks like interference on the screen. On some areas of uniform color, you can see what looks like wavy line noise that kind of crawls up the screen. It isn't as pronounced as the jailbar issue, but its still interference that seems to occur in regular intervals.

Is that a product of a bad RGB mod? Or does the IFU-30A have some kind of hardware deficiency that limits the kind of quality it can output?
#43
@NightWolve: Sorry to hear that. If you do go through with a lawsuit, it would be interesting to see what kind of a defense they would use. I'm not sure if there is a defense against douchebaggery. :P

Man, I'm so out of the loop it seems! What game did Watermelon publish, which they didn't pay out for? What was the excuse for not paying? Or did they just drop the excuses and say "we don't want to pay because... Because we can!"?

@NightWolve: I'm sorry to hear your having troubles with XSEED Games. Did you do work for them, for which they don't want to pay you for as well?
#45
A little off topic: For the game "Deden no Den", is there any reason to own this? Does it have any unique maps or anything that sets it apart from '94? Or is it just literally a re-skin?

I agree. If you thought Android gave users freedom of choice, then Linux will just blow your mind.

I used to be a hard-line Windows supporter (MS-DOS, Windows 2000, etc), but once I tasted Linux I never went back. As long as you can ignore all the BS and FUD people try to spout about it (Ie. It's too hard for the average Joe to use, etc), and are not actually afraid of learning something "new" (Ie. Anything not made by Microsoft), then you'll find its one of the most liberating and powerful operating systems around. Just grab any distribution that uses DEB packages/repos (Ie. Ubuntu, Mint, Debian) and you'll be already set!

I remember the first day I installed Linux, I went "Ok, So first I need to uninstall all the pre-installed junk, and then re-install all the proper apps I want one by one." and then I realized "Oh, Firefox is already installed. Libre Office is already installed. I guess I don't need to remove and add as much as I thought". Even then, installing stuff was a breeze! Just pick the handful of items you want to install from the repos (or app-store if you will), click GO, and just get a coffee. It literally does it all for you. Best of all, non of this "You just installed Flash! Because this application is garbage, it requires you to restart your computer now. Ok or Cancel". :-)

I also don't know what happened. How did Watermelon make a mess of things to get everyone to hate them so much? I suspect it has to do with how they released Pier Solar, in that some people got screwed over (ie. defective versions, canceling orders, not shipping, etc)?
