@GTV reviews the Cosmic Fantasy 1-2 Switch collection by Edia, provides examples of the poor English editing/localization work. It's much worse for CF1. Rated "D" for disappointment, finding that TurboGrafx CF2 is better & while CF1's the real draw, Edia screwed it up...

Recently beat Bloodborne, didn't beat every optional boss but still got the good ending and felt pretty good. What a great game, can't wait to try more Souls games!

Also been playing some Donkey Kong Country on the snes classic in preparation for Tropical Freeze on the Switch this Friday.

Aw I miss when SamIAm used to do these, they were great! Voted for Hellfire S if I can even play it :)

Jason Schreier from Kotaku just wrote an excellent book called "Blood, Sweat, and Pixels." It's a really great book filled with 30 page stories on a ton of different games (Stardew Valley, Diablo III, The Witcher 3, Uncharted 4, etc.).

He interviews a ton of developers and people who worked on these games and really goes over the hardships that go into making a modern AAA (or sometimes not so AAA) video game. Gave me a whole new perspective on video games today and what the hell really goes into them, what's beyond a developer's control, and the thought process of why a company would do something we don't always agree with.

The part that really got me about the book was about the video game "crunch." The time crunch that developers are on in order to release a game on time. Some companies will work crazy overtime like you wouldn't believe just to fix bugs, make art assets look just right, or implenting some sort of function that's totally vital to a game's success.

Quote from: guest on 02/20/2018, 06:25 PMI have a laptop hooked to the hdtv in our living room. It plays everything we watch and is setup with many libraries of classic games. It also plays real PC Engine CD games. It can use much better controllers than SNES without adaptors or or mods or anything. It comes with us on trips and is convenient and portable. I paid as much as a Super Nt shipped for it several years ago.

It doesn't get relegated to crts either, but it sure would be nice if it could connect to one.
I was just asking this in the chat, but what kind of controllers/adapters do you use when emulating on a laptop? I'm starting to realize that I won't always be able to carry CRTs with me (have been without one for months now so I haven't played any retro games in awhile) and it would just be more practical for me to move the way of roms on a laptop.

I've been looking at something like the 8bitdo snes pad, but I'm also pretty neutral on that pad in general.

Quote from: SignOfZeta on 02/21/2018, 11:41 AMMy consoles may stay packed up for months at a time but when I get them out they get played every day for weeks. The older you get the more consoles you accumulate and the less time each one gets in your day to the point where it becomes *extremely* unlikely that all of them will be used in less time than it takes for them to accumulate dust.
I've also been finding how completely unnecessary it is to try to have everything hooked up all the time. Pretty soon I'd like to invest in some plastic tubs to store my shit in so that it's safe and relatively easy to access when I do get the itch to play Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch on Sega CD for 20 minutes and then throw back in a box.

Quote from: Psycho Arkhan on 02/15/2018, 12:47 PMThe remade OST is pretty awesome.

I think the best way to describe this is that it looks like an artbook jumped into the game.

The one review is like THEY CHANGED NOTHING IT SUCKS.
I mean, couldn't you argue that by not changing all that much it is sort of an unnecessary remake?

Also surprised you like the OST, I've heard some negative stuff about it overall.

Beat the Shadow of the Colossus remake on PS4. It was really great to play it all over again, even if it took me half the amount of time. Still great, still a little tough to control, still a wonderfully emotional game.

Been playing Night in the Woods and Stardew Valley on Switch. Also got Bayonetta 1&2 and Wonder Boy on Switch. I have a lot of games to get through in the next month or two.

Quote from: guest on 02/05/2018, 09:05 PMPlayed some Castlevania Chronicles (X68K mode of course). Challenging but a lot of fun, and the best soundtrack (3 versions no less) in the entire series!!

I think I like it more than Super IV but less than Rondo and Bloodlines overall.
Yeah that soundtrack is soooo damn good, you're making me miss my x68k.

Woah I didn't know someone from here was a part of this! I was on the fence but now I definitely have to check this out. Very cool exodus! I'll probably pick it up on PSN since I just got a 20% off coupon from Sony.

Quote from: seieienbu on 02/02/2018, 08:10 PMI went through 3 PS1s and 2 PS2s.  Still on my first Xbox 360 and that thing got played more than any Playstation I've ever owned.  This may be a dumb tin-foil-hat thoery, but I think a lot of the outrage about Xbone was staged by Gamestop.  The motive would obviously be to keep their terrible business model of stupid-pawn-shop to screw people out of money.  After that, well, if you yell enough on the internet people will agree with you eventually so people joined in on the fun and suddenly it was super trendy to hate on M$ for all the evils they used to abuse kind hearted gamers.

Personally, I hate the PS4.  It plays the same games slower than the Xbox, the online infrastructure is worse, and I dislike the interface.  Running tournaments on PS4s is a miserable experience.  You have to go 3 menus deep to actually delete controllers so that the idiot who played on pad 2 sets ago doesn't fuck up your game when he sits down with his wireless controller in his pocket.  PS4 got Street Fighter V and Shenmue 3 though, so I had to go Sony for the exclusives.
Sony is definitely ahead of Microsoft in the exclusives department unless you're super into Halo and Gears of War. But when it comes to online they're both definitely flawed.

Though I don't know how any prefers the Xbox UI homescreen to the PS4 one. It's filled with adds and tiles and junk that feels so convoluted (though I have heard it's gotten a little better).

Quote from: guest on 08/29/2017, 08:36 PMCave Story was really great on the Switch. So many choices for soundtracks and it controlled really well. Plus it's getting (or already has gotten) updates for 2p mode and a few other things. Though, I'm still stuck on the final boss.
I've been stuck on the final boss in the original Cave Story on my Wii for nearly eight years! He's a bastard and the devs should've dialed the difficulty back on him some.
Same to me waaaay back with the PC version. That final boss is a bitch. Difficulty-wise, it is out of place compared to the rest of the game, which is why it harms the overall experience.
I also played the alternate route (where you do not pick up a certain item, to alter the story), still no luck.
Yeah I think I may just restart the game and play it all over again to try to get some better powerups. It'll be a good in between game.

Also, the Nintendo Labo thing is pretty cool for kids. I've seen it being discussed in terms of STEAM learning in schools potentially. That would be great if that's what it actually does.

Love seeing adults get butthurt about Nintendo cardboard not marketed for them, though.

4. BotW is more than just GTA Hyrule in that GTA is more limiting than BotW. OoT shows its age and as someone who has no nostalgia for it, it's a bit hard to grasp currently. I usually prefer 2D Zelda games. LttP being my favorite and LBW was a ton of fun, and the original is great.

6. I would use the short hand weapon? THe axe thing. No fucking clue, I may need to start over if I ever try again, I ran out of blood vials.
1 - which boss is giving you the most trouble and what weapons do you have?
Misery isn't too bad once you get the hang of dodging her quick shot attack. I recommend standing still and then jetpacking away after it gets close.
Doctor #1 - the double helix attack always threw me off, just gotta practice and learn where the holes are.
Doctor #2 - just keep as much distance between you two and you'll be fine.
Doctor #3 - Don't kill misery unless you have to. you can kill her summoned thingies for health.
also, after the 2nd form, you can talk to the purple mimiga twice and they'll all drop some health for you

4 - I'll admit I'm biased in that I hate botw. I found it almost as offputting as Skyward Sword, but I could at least tell that had some good ideas in it.  Also, I know Zelda titles are primarily adventure games, but with every item breaking like it does, that really deincentivizes combat, to the point that I'd rather run than fight, which doesn't seem heroic really...
also, why does every game need crafting? it just bugs me.

6 - I feel that.  but keep at it, ASCEND.
I liked the Kirkhammer (the sword with a sheathe that turned it into a hammer) and the Rifle Spear.
and don't forget, Bloodborne is kinda designed to be played more aggressively than DS
Yeah for Cave Story I really want to go back because it was the first game I got with my Switch and I was really loving everything about it. From the cool music and atmosphere to a game that controlled well and was fun to play. THen I hit a wall with that final boss rush and backed off. I'll go back.

I really enjoyed BotW way more than I thought I would. I was pretty neutral (at best) on it leading up to and after its launch. Having never played a 3D Zelda and always being more a fan of the 2D Zelda games, I doubted it would be for me. But it really struck me in a way that a game never had before with its sheer exploration and literally embodying the "See that mountain off in the distance? You can go there" type of attitude.

That being said, I totally agree that the weapon durability is pretty ass and the Master Sword needing a charge is dumb. Crafting food and potions is ok, but when the game doesn't remember a recipe for something you just made 2 seconds ago, that's a bit of a problem. It's got its flaws for sure and it's certainly not the best game ever made as it's currently being lauded, but I sure enjoyed it for what it's worth with some 90+ hours both portable and at home.

Bloodborne has this weird draw for me despite how awful I am that makes me want to keep going back. I think I will but in slow strides.

In a year where I sadly did not have my PCE around me very much, I've been playing a ton of games.

1. Uncharted 4 (PS4)
2. Uncharted (Vita)
3. Tearaway (Vita)
4. Metal Gear Solid 3 (PS3)
5. Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker (PS3/Vita)
6. Metal Gear Solid 4 (PS3)
7. Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes (PS4)
8. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (PS4)
9. Hotline Miami* (Vita)
10. The Last Guardian (PS4)
11. Final Fantasy VII (Vita)
12. Nier Automata (PS4)
13. Horizon Zero Dawn (PS4)
14. The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (Switch)
15. Super Mario Odyssey (Switch)
16. Sonic Mania (Switch)
17. Inside (PS4)
18. Journey (PS4)
19. Titanfall 2 (PS4)
20. Uncharted The Lost Legacy (PS4)
21. Mario 3D Land* (3DS)
22. Bonk's Revenge* (PCE)
23. Gate of Thunder* (PCE)
24. The Last of Us (PS4)
25. Wolfenstein The New Order (PS4)
26. Wolfenstein II The New Colossus (PS4)
27. Golf Story (Switch)
28. Super Bomberman R (Switch)
29. Skate 2* (PS3)
30. Skate 3* (PS3)

* Games I've already beaten once before.

Games I played but did not beat

1. Cave Story (Switch) - Stuck on the end boss. :(
2. Xenoblade Chronicles (3DS) - After 15 hours of enjoying pretty much only the music, I do not like this game.
3. Splatoon 2 (Switch) - Story mode is cool, but online is coooooler.
4. The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time (3DS) - Got caught up playing FFVII instead, I'll go back and finally beat this eventually. But in a year where a stellar open world Zelda game came out, this took a back seat.
5. Cuphead (PC) - The kind of game to blow you away right from the start. I just got distracted, I'll get back to it.
6. Bloodborne (PS4) - I'm not sure I will ever beat it.
7. Animal Crossing New Leaf (3DS) - You can't beat it, but I sure played a lot of it again for the second time on 3DS. I just really want one for the Switch because that mobile game is not fun.

Games I'm currently still playing that could have maybe made my top ten list of 2017, but I didn't finish in time/just started a few days ago but is really damn cool so far.

1. Persona 5 (PS4)

Top 3 games that came out in 2017 for me

1. Nier Automata
2. The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild
3. Cuphead (even though I haven't even beaten it yet)

Pretty fantastic and inventive game, I really love how intuitive the transformations are and the perfect blend of tight platforming and solid exploration. The game doesn't have any moments of tedium like Breath of the Wild did.
Well if you try to go for the true true ending of 500 moons it gets a bit tedious to run a fine comb through each level to scour for moons, but it's not as bad as BotW since you mentioned it. It honestly adds a good bit to the challenge of really trying to work through previous levels in newer ways.

So I tried to reread through some of this old thread, but I can only take so much medic_wheat grammar-less posts.

Has anyone seen the Super Famicom/SNES NT that he's doing now? This one looks way more affordable (to a degree) at $190 with some cool looking variants. From what I understand, I think the FGPA concept is pretty cool considering what this aims to do, which is to get you to play old carts on an hdtv with no lag and perfect quality intact. I would certainly say this is an interesting and cool concept that isn't nearly as high-roller as the NES one he did that was half a grand.

 https://www.analogue.co/pages/super-nt/

Though, I'm also bumping this thread because I don't really know the reasoning behind the hate for kevtris here. Wasn't this the same guy that also pretty much debunked the Retro VGS with his FGPA board? On the Giant Bombast at around 1:16:50 ish they talk about the potential for there to be a PC Engine one of these things, and they talk about kevtris' reluctance (and almost flat out disdain) for this community as a reason for him to never do one for the PC Engine. (Link to podcast https://www.giantbomb.com/podcasts/) Did this have anything to do with previous members who have since quit? Current flack? Are you guys that opposed to the idea of something like this for the PC Engine?

I'm mainly just really curious and really not trying to stoke any fire here. I wasn't totally keeping track of threads involving this stuff because I wasn't totally interested at the time, and also just lacked knowledge on the subject.

Finally beat Sonic Mania on my lunch break. It felt maddeningly stupid for my first 5 tries, but after that I really figured out how to maximize my time (because my biggest downfall with fighting Dr Robotnik was running out of time). I would give that game like a 3 or 4 out of 5. I had some fun with it, and felt a bit annoyed at times, but overall had a good time.

Also finished Breath of the Wild earlier this week and that game is something. On one hand, the overall experience of playing an open world game like this with such an expansive world where you can literally go anywhere and climb anything was amazing, especially in the first 10 hours or so. But it certainly had its setbacks that made getting through the last 15 of my 75+ hour adventure feel a bit tedious. I still say it's a great game overall without a doubt, but it's nowhere near a "perfect" or "best of all time" game.

May pick up Golf Story next or Stardew Valley soon. But I also may finally play Resident Evil 4 or Bloodborne for the first time to get in the October spirit.
