I don't, but it's not because I wasn't around back then... We couldn't afford (or didn't need to afford, if you ask my dad) cable in the 80s, so I passed by all this Nickelodeon stuff. By the time we did get cable in the early-ish 90s, I was past the age where that kind of programming was appealing. I spent most of my cable viewing hours watching MTV and shit like that (you know, back when they played music videos).

We had this absolutely GIGANTIC rooftop antenna in the 80s and were able to pick up most local channels from the city. It looked exactly like this:

You don't see any of these on houses anymore, that's for sure.

I got my ass kicked in Super Volleyball last night.  I kind of like the graphics and minimal music.  Play control is a chore as I constantly referenced the manual trying to remember how to do the special moves.  Tried to save a team, but didn't have room on my Turbobooster.  Are there any screen-shot comparisons or reviews between the Turbochip and the Genesis version?

Yeah, it's not like other 2 minute caravan modes where your score is based strictly on kills and finding secret bonuses. In Zeroigar, time left on the clock after defeating the boss, life left, and special weapon power left all play a huge part in your final score.

Here's my current:

So where's everybody else?!? Let's get these scores rolling in!

Due to popular demand the below text has been made into it's own thread and stickied for easy reference.

The series started as the "Wonderboy" series, as developed by Westone for SEGA. Due to licensing issues what with SEGA retaining the rights to the "Wonderboy" name and Westone retaining rights to the actual game, the games are named something different on nearly every platform they were ported to. Sometimes they even differ in name on the same platform, between regions.

Without going into things too much, here's a quick legend for you:

Wonderboy (1st game)
Wonderboy (SMS)
Adventure Island (NES)

Wonderboy in Monsterland (2nd game)
Super Wonderboy in Monsterland (SMS)
Bikkuriman World (PCE/TG16 JP)

Wonderboy III: Monster Lair (3rd game)
Wonderboy III: Monster Lair (PCE/TG16 JP, Genesis)
Monster Lair (PCE/TG16 US)

The Dragon's Trap (4th game)
Wonderboy III: The Dragon's Trap (SMS US)
Monster World II (SMS JP)
Adventure Island (PCE/TG16 JP)
Dragon's Curse (PCE/TG16 US)

Wonderboy V: Monster World III (5th game)
Wonderboy V: Monster World III (Genesis JP)
Wonderboy in Monster World (Genesis US)
Dynastic Hero (PCE/TG16 both regions)

There are other platforms these games appeared on, but I listed the main/most common ones here. Only the first game saw a port on the NES. Speaking of the first game, it's also the only game that didn't make it to the PCE/TG16. The Turbo game New Adventure Island is very similar to the first Wonderboy, and it could be viewed as a "remake" of the original with greatly improved graphics (added parallax) and level changes. Some of the level cues are taken directly from the first game but it's not a straight port by any means.

As you can see from the list, "Adventure Island" on the NES and "Adventure Island" on the PCE were actually ports of different games in the series. You might also know that 3 sequels were made on the NES (Adventure Island 2, 3 & 4). These games have nothing to do with the "Wonderboy" series and were spin-offs done by Hudson (not Westone). This spin-off series continued on the SNES and eventually the Wii.

There was a 6th game on the Genesis called "Monster World IV." The "Wonderboy" name was dropped from the title on that final game (probably because the hero is a girl) so it's technically not a part of the series.

IMG IMG
JVC made a killer CRT in the early 2000's. The "flat" ones like the one you have pictured, and the one that I use which is a little newer are fan-fuckin'-tastic for vintage video games.

I haven't noticed any lag on my LCD playing games, but the lack of scanlines on LCDs/plasmas makes these old games look all blocky and just like shit in general. The LCD is great for newer consoles like the Dreamcast and Wii, but anything pre-Dreamcast I play on the JVC CRT.

I have no idea how shubibiman got that score on 2 minute mode. It seems impossible. There must be some secret bonus there that I'm not aware of.

I like 3 better than Revenge.... In a nutshell: 3 has super-huge levels, which I love in a platformer. It recycles a couple level themes from part 2 early on, but there's so much to the game that in the grand scheme of things (and when it comes to Bonk 3, the scheme is grand) it's not bad. Tons of secrets, I like the bonus round system in 3 best of all the Bonks, and the soundtrack is completely original (where 2 recycled a handful of songs from Bonk's Adventure). Plus, the bounce-enemies-on-your-head-for-points is back after a curious absence in 2.

Here's my full review on Bonk 3 CD.

Bonk 3 CD: Bonk's Big Adventure
RED/Hudson Soft - 1993 - U.S.A.
Super CD-ROM
IMG
Bonk 3 CD is a perfect example of why the TurboGrafx/TurboDuo failed in the US. Instead of focusing on developing new cutting edge titles, TTi was wasting their time attempting to fix something that wasn't broken to begin with. Those of you who've read my review of the HuCard version of this game will understand that my critique here is not reflective of the game itself, but rather the enigma that is the CD version.
IMG IMG
Bonk 3: Bonk's Big Adventure already proved itself a worthy outing with the release of the cartridge earlier in 1993. For whatever reason, TTi felt motivated to try to one-up this release with a "new and improved" CD version of the same game. Maybe to try to push the CD format and the Duo in the process? Not likely, since by the end of 1993 the writing was already on the wall for the console. We may never know the motivation here, but that's beside the point.
IMG IMG
Bonk 3 CD addresses the "shortcomings" of the HuCard version by adding a redbook soundtrack and some extra 2 player bonus rounds. Wait a minute.... Oh, that's right, the cart version already had a fine soundtrack and plenty of bonus rounds. At least it should be a no brainer that a redbook soundtrack would automatically destroy a set of lowly chiptunes. .....Right?

Does anyone actually like this game? I remember, even as a kid, I was appalled by it's clunky gameplay and horribly designed characters. The game looks like a badly animated Public Service Announcement, the kind you'd see on saturday morning during commercial breaks.

Love me some Beach Boys music, but that only sickens the concept of this game. Maybe I'm missing something. Does the game get better as you progress? I never gave it the time of day.
What the hell? CC is an underrated gem in the Turbo's library... It's a great game in almost every way. I've never had a problem with the controls, and the cast of playable characters and length of the journey make for good replay value. Here's a fair review by my good brother IvaNEC.

~ CAMP CALIFORNIA ~
ICOM Simulations / TTI
Super CD-ROM
1993

Never in a million years did I think I'd end up enjoying Camp California. Goofy animal characters... sunny days at the beach... crappy tunes like "Good Vibrations"... it all sounded rather hellish to me.

I tend to prefer games that aren't as lighthearted or as Beach Boys plagued as CC is--games like, say, Shape Shifter. So it came as no small surprise when my open-minded brother Alexei told me that Camp California is reminiscent of SS in a number of ways, from how certain characters control to the usage of identical sound effects (indeed, Alexei's hunch that many of the men who made up the CC production team had also been members of the SS design crew proved correct). Upon receiving this news, I promptly purchased the game and gave it a go...

...and lo and behold, I was quite happy with what CC had to offer. I expected the graphics to be good, as I'd already seen some of the wonderfully colorful backgrounds and enormous sprites in screenshots. But the controls functioned much better than I'd anticipated; and while the vocal numbers are awful, the in-level tunes are actually very catchy and usually give way to badass riff-driven tracks when you reach the final area of a given stage. And the journey CC sends you on is not some simple jaunt on the beach; you get to visit plenty of different locations, many of which are anything but "cheery."

Some of those locations require that you make use of skills exclusive to particular characters: one guy can fly, one can swim, and one can tornado his way through enemy lines. While I wasn't looking forward to meeting this silly-seeming animal crew, I actually had a lot of fun putting their many interesting abilities to good use.

You have to rescue your abducted buddies before you can utilize their talents, however. And the path you need to travel isn't immediately obvious; you have to tour the area in your ol' jalopy and do a little experimenting in order to figure out the correct route to take.

You can't cruise around endlessly, however, as you have only so much fuel to burn. But if you put some time into exploring the surprisingly large levels, you can find lots of secret items, including recyclable objects that can be converted into gas.

Of course, you'll run into some tough (and very odd) villains who won't allow you to roam around at your leisure.

The characters, visuals, stage tunes, and exploration elements all work in CC's favor, but I can't pretend that the game is flawless. Yes, it plays much better than I thought it would, but the controls are far from perfect. And when you take hits due to those controls, you'll have to endure annoying screams of "Bogus!" or "Bummer!" from the otherwise likable characters. Also, it can be frustrating to march halfway through a long level only to realize the character you picked isn't cut out for the job at hand. And while the length of the quest is a positive, the absence of a save feature is not. You may end up traveling quite a long way only for real life to intervene and force you to abandon your console, leaving you no choice but to resume play from the very beginning when you return to the game.

But Camp California succeeds in so many areas that it shouldn't be very difficult for players who give it a fair chance to look past its issues and enjoy it.

Someone found our site a while back before we were really ready to publish it, but now we feel the time is right to "officially" go public with this thing. At present we have nearly 200 reviews online and will continue actively update the site with reviews and other content every week. The site is the offspring of a collaboration between runinruder, GUTS, (for those of you who know them) and myself. At present runinruder is responsible for about 90% of the content, with the remaining 10% being mostly my contributions, GUTS has contributed a couple reviews but more importantly, is entirely responsible for the site design. We decided to go with a blog-style site since it makes updating a lot easier. Our goal is to eventually cover every Turbo/PCE game ever made, and offer multiple viewpoints on many of them. Feel free to comment on the reviews using the comment forms on the site, or offer feedback in this thread. Enjoy.

I'm inspired on this one by the Warsong comparison up there. This is a somewhat unfair comparison as the PC-FX screen captures are of a markably lower quality than that of the PS and Saturn caps. When viewing the PC-FX screens, keep in mind that the game isn't really washed out like it appears here-- it's colored just as dark and richly as the other two versions. I think part of the problem is that the Saturn and PS caps are straight from emulators while the PC-FX caps look like they were taken from a TV. I stole 100% of these images as I can't be bothered to capture my own.

This is Warsong 2/Langrisser II/Der Langrisser FX (same game). One of my personal all-time favorite games.

EDIT: While I only own the PC-FX version, the Playstation version looks from the screencaps like the exact same game, pixel-for-pixel while the Saturn version looks like it is basically the same game with subtly redrawn graphics. Also, the PC-FX has beautiful FMV cutscenes; I can't speak for the other two.

Awesome.

In 1995 I bought a '76 Lancia Scorpion for $1 from my neighbor. He was moving and just wanted to give it to me, but I felt we needed to put something on the bill of sale. If the Scorpion isn't a Giorgetto Giugiaro design, then I'll be damned. As a matter of fact, the Scorpion looks so similar to a DeLorean, it's almost like they recycled the Scorpion design, added a few gimmicks (like wing-doors) and called it a DeLorean.

I didn't own the car long and it ended up getting sold not longer after.... I'm still upset about that. Should have kept it.

Here's a pic of one (the one I owned was metallic silver/gray, just like a DeLorean)--

I'll admit, I let my curiosity get the best of me. I pulled the trigger on one of the Space Fantasy Zone reprints from Anime4Ever. While I still paid more than I should have, I ought to preface by saying I got away with a copy for far less than the $160 asking price.

Why'd I buy it? Hard to say. I was really, really curious about the quality of the reprint and I guess I wanted to compare it with the Sapphire reprint that Anime4Ever also sells. I guess a small part of me also wanted to be able to rub it in the tool's face that bought a copy of the same thing on Yahoo Japan for over twenty times what I paid for it. If Anime4Ever has any business sense at all they'll take the rest of their stock to Yahoo Japan and make enough money to buy a small island and retire there.

So about the thing itself....

Overall I'm pretty pleased with the presentation, the quality of the inserts, spine card, etc, is really really good. On very close inspection you can tell it's a reproduction, albeit done on some very high end equipment. The disc is a CD-R and not a professionally pressed disc. However, they used some really high quality CD-R media-- the back is silver like a regular CD and resembles the higher end Diamond Silver CD-R media Missa turned me on to a while back. The game even played on one of my systems that normally chokes on CD-Rs.

The foldout is a scan and print of some magazine article on the game from 1992.

So is the reprint worth picking up? Not for $160 it's not. If I had to put a price on this, I'd say $40 would be a reasonable price point. I can't imagine Anime4Ever is going to sell very many for $160. But then again, judging by that Yahoo Japan auction, maybe they will. $40 is less than I paid, but anytime I start feeling remorse over my purchase I'm going to load up that Yahoo Japan auction and set myself straight. At the very least, it's an oddity that relatively few people in community will ever own, so I can take some comfort in that.

I took some photos, but they really don't show anything you can't see on Anime4Ever's website. Here they are anyway, just because.

The board has a fuse on it, I'm sure of it. I've never been inside a Duo-R, but many NEC systems use non-glass type fuses that look more like this:

IMG

For example, the TurboExpress/GT uses a ceramic fuse of this type but black instead of white.

When you push RUN with the power on to see if you can get the CD-ROM to do something, do you have a CD game inserted and the lid closed? If the lid is open and/or there is no game the CD-ROM won't do anything.

It's long been known that by replacing all the capacitors in the audio circuit on the Express PCB you are able to cure all sound issues, but video issues have been a bit of a grey area. What has been unknown (until now) is just which component is directly linked to the common video problem these units are beginning to have.

Let's give a round of applause to Sinistron, the real hero in all this, for donating a TurboExpress with bad video for me to butcher on the operating table. It was a very long and tedious process, as I ended up replacing almost everything on the board by the time I was done and I had to play test after every component which meant quite a bit of assembly and disassembly.

The culprit turned out to be the smallest, most innocuous capacitor on the entire board and the only reason it wasn't the very last one I did was because there was one cap I didn't have a proper uF/voltage match for. At the very least all this paid off and finally put to rest just what causes the no-video issue. Real quick: the capacitor in question is in the power circuit, specifically, the line that supplies the mains to the LCD. This cap fails, dries out, bleeds, etc causing insufficient voltage supplied to run the LCD.

So let's get down to it.... I took photos documenting the entire process, but I'll only post the relevant ones here.

IMG
tefix1.jpg

Circled in green is the audio circuit. We already know what these caps are for, so we ignored them for this procedure.
Circled in red is the culprit for the video issue. You can barely see it, can't you ?

IMG
tefix2.jpg

Since I didn't know where the problem was specifically, I removed the shield covering the CPU, VDC, etc. The caps circled in blue are the ones that are exposed by removing the shield. It is not necessary to replace these to fix the video, but Sinistron got a freebie on this one. I included this pic so folks who might want to replace EVERYTHING can see just what's under the shield.

IMG
tefix3.jpg

Circled in red is the replacement cap I installed in place of the bad on. The cap is a 4.7uF 35-volt electrolytic. This is THE culprit of the backlight-but-no-picture video issue. Replace it and your video works again.

IMG
tefixfinal.jpg

Just a final look at the board after I was done with it. I had to run wires to remote-mount a few of the replacement caps due to not enough room on the board, etc. FYI, there is plenty of open space down behind where the batteries sit where you can remote-mount caps if you need to.

There you have it. It's a simple fix, really, and luckily it's probably the most easily accessible cap on the entire board.
