Do you listen to other music while playing games?

On some games, the music gets to be a little monotonous for me while playing. Especially if it is a game like Military madness, where there are 4 songs to listen to...over and over again.

Do you listen to any other music besides the game's music?

In my hay-day, I used to listen to Led Zeppelin while playing Military Madness, and Faith No More while playing Neutopia. Those are the only two that stick out in my memory from a long time ago for some reason.

I remember growing up, playing Commodore 64 games with my brother, we would listen to Kix, TnT, MSG and Bulletboys.

CGQuarterly

Sometimes.  It depends on the game.  With some games, the audio is a part of the experience that I don't want to drown out with external music.  But there is also something cool about playing old games while listening to some period-appropriate music.  A Friday night spent playing Genesis while listening to hair metal is a Friday night well spent.

Nazi NecroPhile

There's nothing on OBEY that's bothered me enough to want to listen to something else instead.  The closest I can get to that is muting the PSP and half-assed paying attention to something on TV when I'm mindlessly grinding in something like Dungeon Explorer.

ATM, I can only think of one game that I played a bunch of, while listening to a new cd I had gotten.  I was playing Zelda 3, & had just picked up House of Pain's 2nd album.  So, in my mind, those 2 things are forever Linked!  Get it, LINKED?!?  HAHAHA, I crack myself up, but, all seriousness aside, that's a true story.  Whenever I listen to that album, I think of Zelda 3, & whenever I play Zelda 3, I think of that cd.  I think there are a few others, but I don't recall at the moment.

Kinda different.  Whenever I smell ozone from one of those ionizer machines, I think of Mega Man X: Command Mission.  When I was playing that game a couple years ago, we had just bought a some new cabinets, & the varnish from them was so overwhelming, that we borrowed an ionizer from a friend to get rid of the smell.  So, memories of ionizers & Command Mission are now intrinsic! :D

Hell yeah. Mostly metal and hard rock. I love to game to lamb of god, children of bodom, Marilyn manson, and shadows fall.

I don't much for the 8/16-bit stuff, but when Forza Motorsport came out and I could listen to my own music in-game, I took full advantage of it! I think Faith No More's Angel Dust and King For A Day albums were among the first to get ripped to the X-Box hard drive so it's nice to know there are other FNM fans out there. :)

I Remember for Vice City on my OG XBOX you could play music in your hard drive right through the game.  That I did and enjoyed.  I remember with ridge racer for the PS1 you could pull the disc and put in any music disc.  Other than that I stick with what the developers intended.

I always listen Youth of America by Wipers when I play Thunder Spirits. It works pretty good for any space shooter though.

Usually whenever I buy a new album that I've been really looking forward to, I listen to it with headphones and play a game or few. Yay.

kosko99

Yup, I tend to do that a lot.
Sometimes I play a DOTA game and on the background there is a Metallica live going on.
It's good on MMO when you can barely hear your other party members giving you orders

cr8zykuban0

i usually wouldn't. i've never really had an issue with the music in a game.  i perfer listening to the original sound track. it just feels weird if i put something eles on.

Some games, where there is really no "music", are perfectly suited for music:

VolfieV, for example, is a great game, with or without your own music. YOU MUST PUT VOLFIEV SOUND UP LOUD BECAUSE THE SFX ARE AWESOME AND AN IMPORTANT PART IF THE GAME (for me, anyway).

SFX loud.

The only obey I have listened to alternate music during was Turrican... and that was when I was a teenager. I put Megadeth's Peace Sells But Who's Buying album on, and listened to it over and over again... so it's the same as PD's experience with Zelda 3. Other than that... not usually... I will occasionally listen to other music on the rare occasion that I play RuneScape, but I usually play stuff by Tunecrafter when I do that, and she works for Jagex now, so... yeah.

Mario Kart SNES. I listened to tons of music with that game during the BILLION OF HOURS  my family + friends played it. I am talking 4-5 hour marathons routinely, non-stop, just-part-of-the-good-life.

Same exact scenario for BASEBALL STARS NES.

Micro Machines NES.

Super Pitfall NES.

KABOOM

JOUST

BALLOON FIGHT

etc. Etc.

Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved is great for adding your own music.  I highly recommend Tom Middleton's mix of "Lost Inside", or Sugar Crystals by Airiel.

A lot of my childhood was listening to Dr. Demento tapes that I had recorded over the radio while playing other games.  I can finally truly relive that with the boombox I just got, so I'm super happy :D

dallaspattern

This thread brought back memories:) I got my first TG in grade 5 and there was one tape I would listen to over and over as I played. That tape was: http://cps-static.rovicorp.com/3/JPG_400/MI0001/987/MI0001987574.jpg?partner=allrovi.com
Then one day, I invited the kid next door over to play. He laughed at me, dubbed me a copy of Blood Sugar Sex Magic and my life was never the same.

ClodBusted

I usually don't. But when I do, it is while playing Forza Motorsport 4. I got my laptop hooked up as a media server, so the Xbox 360 is able to stream music from the laptops library. I made a playlist consisting of Overclocked Remix and some other videogame related music that fits the driving.

Yesterday, I played Forza Horizon while hearing Outrun music in the background. I had a good time driving a Ferrari Testarossa aimlessly all over the map with passing breeze, magical sound shower and splash wave on my ears.

SephirothTNH

Ever since Futurama I've liked to listen to Rush while playing Space Invaders.  It just feels right.  In general though I don't listen to other music while playing games.

SuperGrafx

I prefer the game's soundtrack, no matter how bad.

ClodBusted

Oh and I remeber listening to The custom soundtrack radio station sometimes when playing GTA Vice City on PC. Mostly consisting of Bubblegum Crisis and Depeche Mode, as far as I can remember from over 10 years ago.

EvilEvoIX

Pantera and Doom really went well together.  I remember blowing shit up to Vulgar Display of Power BITD and it was fun.

Unacceptable.

Some games just have really monotonous music. It's OK to turn it down and play some Chopin instead.

I did it with the two Rad Racers, I had a car stereo hooked to the left input of my room stereo and.the NES to the other input. Nothing more rad than that.

I agree, but I rarely find a game with bad enough music to warrant not playing it. Skyblazer for snes comes to mind - the music really brings down the rest of the game so much, i couldn't continue playing

monotonous music not always = bad music.
and as I said, if the music is too bad, then I really don't play it at all.
bitd I did even play very bad games just because the music was so awesome. now that is ok in my book :)

No way. I don't really like music. I only like computer game music.
