All are originals (I don't dig CDRs).  Imports are all complete, near mint or mint.  I have several loose US Hucards though that I'll be replacing with complete imports over time.

Currently in the post, and on the way to my home are:

Detana Twinbee
Ys 1,2,3,4 (Japanese versions)
Super Star Soldier
Gunhed
NEC Avenue 6 pad (brand new, boxed)
Kaze Kiri: Ninja Action
Xak III

Liquid Snake

Don't have time to list everything........... 8)

Could you comment on how good the conversions of these games are?

Particularly Fatal Fury Special in comparison to the Neo Geo/Arcade version; I'm really interesting in picking that one up.

Any help appreciated.

Necro

I have a small collection:

3-1 Duo pack in cd
Air Zonk
Bloody Wolf
China Warrior
Dungeon Explorer
Keith Courage
Legendary Axe
Legendary Axe II
Lords of Thunder
Ordyne
Super Darius
TV Sports Football
TV Sports Hockey

As for FFS and WH2, you should just get those games in AES format.  They will probably actually be cheaper than PCE versions and will be arcade perfect with zero loading times...

I can't speak of the other games, but Street Fighter 2 is a fantastic conversion.  The gameplay is spot-on, and the graphics are excellent (considering the color pallete limitations).  I think it plays better than the other original 16-bit console versions.  In comparison to the SNES version, I like this one a bit better, though the music isn't quite as well done due to limitations in the PCE's synth (but still sounds pretty good).

You *need* a 6-button NEC Avenue Pad for it though, because the control mapping for the 2-button pad is really stupid (in my opinion).  I would think it would be better to assign one punch and one kick to the I and II buttons, but it sets light/med/hard to run/I/II, and you have to switch between punch and kick with the slect button.  It's *much* too hard to play this way, and it won't allow you to remap the controls in the options menu.

PCEngineHell

Yes,here we go....
SF 2 Champ.
How it rates to me:
I liked this version the most of the 16-bit ports.
Its graphics are very sharp, very colorful, and everything seemed right on.
All the voices were there, and much clearer then the Genesis/MegaDrive counterparts.
In fact sound as a whole sounds better to me then the Sega port.
Voice wise extremely close to Snes in fact.
On the monitor I use:Apex 24 inch, the Pc Engine Sf just looks better/sharper then both the Snes SF2 Turbo, and Genesis Sf2 Special Champ.
I modded a Docs 6 button arcade stick, that was for Snes,to work as a Pc Engine stick.I used the 6 button layout as a means to place it like this:
                          4           5              6
                    select        blank        blank
                          1           2              3
                     Run           ButtonII     Button I

It makes it much smoother to switch between punch and kick function on SF2.
Fatal Fury Special and World Heros 2 both support this layout perfect.
On FF Special Select acts as a weak attack,so you get a SNK 4 button like layout.World Heros 2 uses a 3 buttonlayout consisting of Run and buttons 2 and 1.
Which like FF Special,is perfect with my arcade stick.
My stick uses micro switchs, and is very durable.
I have had FF Special on MVS and AES both. And World Heros 2 also.
The Arcade Card Pro FF Special has better music quality then the carts.
It also uses Roland Sound. The voices are near perfect. The screen size is full screen.Everything is there intact.EVERYTHING!
Load times are almost nill actually.1-2 secs.
All animation is there, including forward and back animations when characters walk.
Picture just as sharp as the NEO aes system I used.
Characters exact same size.
The thuds are a little off.
When Characters go to the back grounds, they get smaller like the Neo version.
It makes the Sega CD and Snes cart look like a joke.
WW2.
It does the exact same, makes the Snes version look like a joke. The animation is all there, voices are very clear, very close to neo.
load times are between 2-8 secs.

Characters are exact same size.
Capt Kid has his vulture,on Snes he doesnt.....
has opening intro,Snes doesnt.
Cd quality music on intro and fights, snes doesnt, and neither does the Neo carts. All bonus rounds are there and intact.
Pict very sharp, colors right on.So close to neo it makes you wonder....
The tank busting trough the wall in Brockens stage is even there
The only grip.....they did a black bar at the top of the screen, not large, and used it for the energy bars and crap.
This is fine though,it didnt affect the size of anything, everything is the exact same size as the Neo none the less.unlike the Snes ports of fighters, where the black bars have nothing in them, and where the screen is cropped and everything is much smaller then the arcade versions.Snes ports sucked......
I paid 23 bucks each for both WW2 and FF Special.
FF Special was new sealed.
WW2 was used but near mint.
Ebay is my friend.
Arcade Card lives up to the name, near arcade perfect ports.
Youll get you moneys worth.
I find that the Pc Engine over all just did better arcade ports then the other 2 16-bit systems. You can take a Sega Genesis/MegaDrive,slap it with a sega cd/and 32X,and you will still never get the same kind of quality games, and arcade ports as a Pc-Engine set up."Note:Im not saying a TurboGrafx/Duo set-up.Why???Because US release wise we got screwed on games,US wise the Turbo stuff didnt compare with the Genesis libary of titles, and other then not so easy mods, and expensive Kasido adapters, your going to be SOL if you want to play more then 50 good hu-cards.And you dont require a adapter for the Arcade Card with a Pc-Engine setup."Anyway, same goes for the Snes/SFamicom.
The BEST titles were on the Pc Engine, shooter wise, action wise, fighting wise,RPG wise.Think about it,would any of you here ever trade your Pc Engine setup for a Snes/Sega Mega/Genesis set-up.Not on your life.
You know it,I know it,and every poor sucker who wishes youd trade your NEC stuff to them knows it too.Let them rot I say,or let them eat Magic Engine for that matter.

esteban

thanks for the scoop on SF II' and the SNK ports. I'm no fan of the vs. genre, but I'm still interested in hearing about stuff like this (i.e. comparisons of games across platforms).

Thanks for the info on those conversions.

Though now I've heard conflicting reports on the ACD FFS.

Another person told me that it was the worst port next to the sega cd version.

I really must try that game for myself, I really want to see just how close to the arcade original the arcade card was able to bring this game.

lord_cack

Hey my first post...woot woot. I am quite proud of my meager collection of games. I am quite lucky though as I got most of these games when they were originally released and saved myself a bit of money I guess. But of course I do kick myself everytime I remember the fact that I could have got Dracula X new for $80 when it was released....oh the things we do in the name of love...anyway, heres what I got:

Art of Fighting
Beyond Shadowgate
Bomberman
Bonk's Adventure
Bonk's Revenge
Cosmic Fantasy 2
Dungeon Explorer
Dungeon Explorer II
Fatal Fury Special
Gate of Thunder
Kieth Courage in Alpha Zone
Legendary Axe

Neutopia
Ninja Spirits
Order of the Griffon
Power Golf
Power Golf 2 Golfer
Sim Earth
Somer Assault
Street Fighter II Champion Edition
Turrican
TV Sports Basketball
TV Sports Football
World Court Tennis
World Heroes 2
Yo Bro'
Ys Book I and II
Ys III: The Wanderer from Ys

Thats all for now. But, in a couple of weeks I will have more to add....
A dark tide will rise and she will walk again. He is coming.....

PCEngineHell

The Pc Engine port of FF Special was the best port.It was as close as you will get unless you have a NeoGeo setup. The sega cd port cd audio was nasty, the music sounded sapped of life for some reason, and some background stuff was missing.Character animation was missing also.Voice quality wasnt all that hot either. All in all I thought JVC didnt try had enough on this port. The snes port was missing the intro, and was cropped into that stupid small 400-300 screen aspect ratio, like most fighters on snes, the wide screen fighting game system.Only the MK games and Killer Instinct seemed to be full screen on that system. To be honest,I really hated the snes port.I hated the sega cd port too,I liked FFS so much, and still like it just as much this day,and it was a eye sore to see the Sega CD and Snes ports.Such let downs.

lord_cack

I agree, Fatal Fury Special, World Heroes 2 and Art of Fighting I might add, are fantastic ports on the PC Engine. In every repsect, but these games are TOUGH. But, that in and of itself is true to the arcade versions. Snes versions will have to do I guess, for those out there not bless with a system that can handle them.... :D
A dark tide will rise and she will walk again. He is coming.....

Again, this was interesting. I'll keep your thoughts in mind if I ever write about these games. :)

I have played the ACD port of art of fighting and I will concur that it is the best port outside of the neo version though still a ways off.

AOF sucks anyway IMO.

If anybody's interested, I've been thinking about posting a few screens and notable differences on yahoo or something btwn the the Arcade/NeoGeo, PCE and SNES versions of SF2 CE, AOF, and whenever I get it FFS.

I'm going to post another topic for my FG conversion comparisons since continued discussion here would be totally off-topic.

Staying on topic, here is my small list of pce originals.
Well, technically they aren't really mine, I just work at a local game exchange and have unlimited access to them.
The system isn't for sale fortunately though all the games are and we hope to have little tournaments for retro games later.
Anyway, I digress...

Hu-card:
Bonk's Adventure
Bonk's Revenge
Bonk 3
Devil Crush
Splatterhouse
Keith Courage
Legendary Axe 2
Ninja Spirit
SF2'
few others I can't think of...

CD:
Y's Book I & 2
Fire Pro Wrestling
Dracula-X (though probably not for long sadly)

Some Turbografx titles i have for some time now, all the others including consoles i collected within 3 months.
Not that bad eh?
Maybe worth mentioning is that some titles that were released by NEC like Wonder Boy in Monster Land, Fatal Fury, Devil Crush, Out Run,... I do have on other consoles so i'm not looking for them anymore.
When i save up some money i think i will focus on some good shooters.

Cheers

I picked up Cosmic Fantasy 2 and Monster Lair off ebay,so Im adding them to my list.

Keranu

I just want to add that the PCE arcade card ports of the SNK fighters are excellent and are the best non-Neo Geo versions, well at least for Fatal Fury Special since it's the only one I have played. Truely magnificent.
Quote from: TurboXray on 01/02/2014, 09:21 PMAdding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

there are other with much bigger collection than mine... besides PC Engine was/is side hobby for me from way back...

there are still many titles I haven't get around to pick up... which makes my visit to Japan interesting as it's not easy to hunt for PC Engine stuff at cheap price... :p

It's amazing how you think that you're establishing a pretty good game collection, and then you look at some of those collection pictures on digitpress.com.  There are people that have to devote *entire bedrooms or basements* to games.  I've got most of my stuff in giant plastic tubs in the closet.  I'm running out of space for stuff in my apartment, but my collection is nowhere near that of some folks, and I have hundreds of games for many different systems.

I try not to think about competing with any of the DP gods over there. I'm currently torn as to what to collect next, after my Turbo run. I'm torn between Genesis or Neo Geo. Genesis scares me just due to the sheer volume of sports titles, however Neo Geo will be pretty pricy to complete. Maybe I'll just retire after I finish up the Duo.
Not all who launder are washed.

I don't really collect on purpose. I just accumulate. My turbo/pce stuff grows slowly. I mainly have a ton of Neo Geo mvs and arcade PCBs

PCEngineFX

For my collections, I'm pretty proud of two of them - my complete US Turbo CD collection and complete PC-FX collection.  I still need to hunt down about 25 or so US Hu's to finish it off, which would be nice....

Haha, thanks, but I'm sure David Shadoff smokes me on this.  I believe his collection is 100% complete on all games.

One day I'll start working on little snippets on the oddball accessories.  Although much of that can be found on the internet now.
Check my site for Turbo, Neo, NGPC, and superguns!

About the last one, this is what I have the most fun finding.  Stuff like the Virtual Cushion, Duo Monitor, Rom Rom Amp, etc.  I even pick up boxed power supplies, boxed controllers, and the like.

Pshh, I bet most of them aren't even sealed. Enjoy your used games!

dj898

what's the point having sealed games if you aren't gonna play them? o_O
only sealed game in my collection are either I haven't got time to play them yet or they are known stinker and just for the decoration purpose only. :p

How are L-Dis and Gradius 2?

PCEngineHell

L-Dis is wonderful, but very hard. The sound fx and graphics are wonderful, lots of voice for a shooter, and its very clear. The graphics are nice and colorful, some of the sprites are very large infact, and there is some very fast paced areas that can piss you off,as shooters are supposed to do.Power-ups are plenty found, thank god,and the power-ups are very cool.Gradius 2 is damn near perfect to the arcade as far as I can tell.I cant beat the last stage though,as I get to the 6 legged walker thing and get wasted trying to move back and forth between its legs.

PCEngineHell

Exile 2 is added to my list now too btw.

akamichi

I kinda accidently (hehe) became a collector about the time the PSX and Saturn came out.  I found myself playing more PCE instead of my PSX because I wasn't fond of most of the 3D games that had come out.

Anyway, I haven't counted my collection in a while, but at last count, I had somewhere around 300-350 PCE games.  I've picked up a number of games since that last count though.  There's probably a number of duplicates in there too.  Nothing particularly rare IMO... I think.

Right now, I've gotten to the point to buy whatever PCE game I can find.  In my area, there's basically only one store that carries PCE games but that one store has a number of branches.  They usually just have loose HuCards, but every once in a while they have some gems.  I usually don't buy card/cd only but at the minimum there has to be a case and booklet.

Oh, I'd say the one interesting/rare/whatever thing I have in my collection is a Hu7 (or Hu7D... I forget which) .  It was the PCE development system.  Unfortunately I don't have all the parts to try it out but it seems to work (ie it plays HuCards just fine).

QuoteI get to the 6 legged walker thing and get wasted trying to move back and forth between its legs.
That beast is tough as balls!  You only have a few pixels of leeway when scooting beetween the legs.... truly, truly maddening.

As for the original question on Gradius II SCD: Gradius fans will love it. Old-skool shooter fans will love it.

L-Dis: a wonderful cute-em-up, easilly acquired (not expensive on ebay). Old-skool shooter fans will dig this... it fits in well with the other cute-em-ups on the system. TRIVIA: there was a big PC-Engine scene in France, and the importers even provided translated instruction sheets (1 page, double-sided photocopy). I have one of these for L-Dis. If only the U.S. had had a similar import scene!

Thanks, I actually used to have more, but I sold a bunch of games off a few years ago.....which I shortly regretted.  Some of them we're semi rare, like Hi Leg Fantasy, the Startling Odessey series, Star Breaker, the US version of Dungeon Explorer 2(don't ask), the US versions of both Exiles(in which I did get another Exile 1), & more that I'm sure I'm forgetting.  I think Hi Leg Fantasy is probably the rarest of the games I sold, I'll probably never see that game anywhere again, but that's life, I'll live.

edit-Forgot to mention, all my stuff is original & complete, except I don't have any of the cardboard boxes.  There's a few chips that don't have the original cases, but I custom made my own, with graphics from the respective games on the back of cd cases that I put them in.  Also, most of my Jp games have the spine cards.  As for systems, I have a Turbo w/CD Rom, Turbo Duo, PC Engine GT, 2 Super Grafx, & 1 Super Grafx CD Rom(not the RAU 30, but the actual CD ROM system itself).  I also have a couple of 6 button pads, & loads of regular controllers.  I also had connections with TTI's last secretary Eun Lopez, so, some games I got for free, & I got lot's of info from her.

Oh, 2 games that are not original, are Motteke Tomago & Space Fantasy Zone.

Have a nice collection is great but I'm wondering how many of you are actually "playing" your games?

I only collect the games I'll play the most.
