If the raffle is still up I'd love to be entered!

I think it let's you use the special weapons. Been a long time, so not 100% sure.

Anyone out there have any experience modding the TGCD base for RGB? I'd like to mod my original unit, and know that I can tap off of the expansion bus in the CD base, and place a DIN8 in the "wing" section of the base, just want to get a feel for how difficult that is.

End goal is that I'd be using RGB to SCART to Component or HDMI. Preferrably I'd like to go SCART to HDMI (as I'm pretty sure a DIN8 to HDMI cable doesn't exist) and wire stereo sound to the DIN as well. In theory is seems relatively simpe and there are a few places I've seen that sell pre modded amplified DIN to SCART cables for just such a purpose.

My biggest problem is finding the time and examples of exactly what I want to do to make sure that I don't butcher my precious original system  [-o<

Language selection
For a language selection, hold I and II and press Select at the title screen to choose Japanese, English, and Chinese options.

Five lives
For five lives, hold Diagonal Down/Left, Select, I and II at the title screen. The copyright notice will turn blue and a sound will play if the code has worked.

99 art strength
For 99 art strength, intentionally lose all of your lives, then hold Up, I and II at the "Continue" screen until you hear a sound. Continue the game for 99 art strength.

There is English built right into the PCE version as well. I think you have to hold down Select or some other button combination at the title screen, but it will put the game with all text in the cutscenes into English. Did this on an emulator once, but I've been too cheap to shell out for the real version (some day though).

Old topic, and not sure how viable, but Might and Magic 4 and 5...though I suppose it may loose something since there's probably no way you could combine both games into World of Xeen...or could you? With some changes maybe it would fit on 1 CD?

My top ten lists (this is tough!)

TG-16:

1. Dungeon Explorer
2. Military Madness
3. Ninja Spirit
4. Blazing Lazers
5. Parasol Stars
6. Bonk's Adventure
7. Neutopia
8. Legendary Axe
9. Splatterhouse
10. Veigues Tactical Gladiator

(PCE that would be up there as well: Street Fighter 2)

TG-CD/Duo

1. Ys Book I & II
2. Splash Lake
3. Gate of Thunder
4. Dungeon Explorer II
5. Dragon Slayer
6. Cosmic Fantasy 2
7. Lords of Thunder
8. Last Alert
9. Lords of the Rising Sun
10. Exile

(PCE game that should be up there too: Dracula X)
Take into account that these are titles that I actually own and have played. I'm not commenting on ones that I haven't played or don't own, as I'm sure the list would change a bit.

I've thought about this quite a bit over the years, and still feel that myself at about 12 years old could have run the marketing department of Hudson USA better...

So a few things that I would have done differently:

1. Advertise more on mainstream television stations. In all my time I'd only ever seen 1 TG commercial on TV during the 90s. It's not like the Seattle Metro area is a tiny market either.

2. Stop fucking up the box art! Just take whatever the Japanese game had and translate it to English. Done. We all know that Turbo Grafx box art was horrible and I KNOW that drove many people to the cooler looking art that most Genesis games had.

3. Drop the price of the TG-CD by at least $75 and include 1-2 games as a packin. Monster Lair and Fighting Street would have been fine I think.

4. Translate and import as much as possible (that is still relevant in the US) from Japan. I remember drooling over the Japanese game sections in EGM and GamePro all the time...if even half that stuff would have made it stateside it would have been huge.

5. Focus on Shooters, RPGs and Action/Adventure games. Sports were not the forte of the TG, and since Sega seemed to have all those games sewn up, I'd have concentrated in other areas.

6. Go after exclusives that were either too violent/bloody, obscure, or not possible on other systems (converting PC titles comes to mind with the CD).
#109
I agree! Any games that were slated to come to the US and never did, or really SHOULD have and can be patched and/or dubbed would be awesome.
#110
I may have missed it somewhere, but is there a good source to get an english manual (or at least front and back manual replacement, like what Sparky was doing for some games) and an english tray insert?
#111
Right now a burned copy. I have a few backups of discs, and while I had the original years ago it got misplaced in a move. Probably doesn't help that my 2 year old got into my Turbo collection and scratched up a few things recently too.
#112
What does the following error mean?

Performing Track Mode Analysis... One moment...
Error with Data Track 02: Track following error
Fatal Error: This analysis phase has failed. Aborting...

It saves the TOC from the disc, but that's as far as it seems to get. Tested with other games (Loom) and it worked fine. Perhaps an issue with my disc...
#113
Heck yeah, I'd love to have the US-ified booklet (even if it's just front and rear cover) and a US-ified tray insert!!

I'm having trouble patching right now, about to post over in the dub thread about an error I'm getting.
#114
Is there a available English manual and tray insert? It'd be great to see one produced that appears like a later release Duo title for everyone's library.
#115
QuoteI DIDN'T WANT GREASY CONTROLLERS. I still use those pads, and they are still CLEAN (no coagulated grease chunks on that beauty!)

I still love every single goddamn tune from Dungeon Explorer.
This^^ I still use my original system, turbo tap and controllers and they are very clean and have surprisingly little wear.

I still love pretty much very tune in DE as well. Turbo did have some really awesome music on both chip and CD.
#116
I found a copy locally in Kirkland, WA with the HuCard, sleeve and mint manual for $18. I think that shop owner didn't realize what he had at the time, and I wasn't about to tell him.
#117
Hard to remember for sure, but I think I had a friend stay over that had a TON of NES games (I think we owned about 4 at the time and he had like 30). He ended up falling asleep, but I discovered Zelda....it was all over from there, I could't get enough of adventure and RPGs after that.
#118
haha, exactly my reaction too!
#119
After thinking about it for a bit I think probably Ys 1&2. At the time that I got it, it was the only CD system around and the voice overs and music were fucking amazing. There basically wasn't a single second of my first playthrough that I wasn't like "Holy fucking shit this game is awesome!!!!!"

It was even more amazing when my parents got a new stereo setup and I got their old one. My Dad is a huge audiophile and the old system was amazing (speakers were originally $900 each in 1983 dollars) and pumping the music through that was mind blowing.
#120
Do we need to do anything if our address changed? I remember a while back getting an e-mail asking if the address was correct that I responded to, but want to make sure that it gets shipped to my correct address.
#121
Looking forward to this a lot.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that everything goes well, but I never underestimate people's capacity to fuck stuff up in a production setting like what's been happening with this company.
#122
I hate you!

Seriously though, that's an amazing find, I only dream about such things happening.
#123
I was 11 on that date, but turned 12 in October of that year and got one for Christmas. It was the ONLY thing on my list and the only thing that mattered to me at the time. A friend and I were at the Fred Meyer in Marysville, WA and caught my mom walking out with it, so I knew I was getting one before that day even though she teased me saying that since I'd seen it she took it back to the store.

The next year I got the TG-CD with Y's Book 1 & II and Sherlock Holmes. It was a huge surprise because $400 for my family at the time was quite expensive. My dad always like to go overboard on Christmas though because his always sucked as a kid.
#124
That'd actually be the lowest on my list and more of a wish than anything. I'd really like all the other stuff done though.
#125
So, you say the gears cut loading time in games? That sounds awesome since the loading time on some can be quite long.

This just makes me realize that I'd like to get quite a bit of work done on my systems that I just don't have the time for any more.

  • This gear fix if it reduces load times
  • The TGCD register issue that you mentioned in a different post (my TGCD has had that noise since day 1 out of the box in 1990 or so)
  • DIN 8 installed for a DIN to SCART cable for RGB installed in my TGCD base unit
  • Region switch mod
  • Full cap replacement on my Express
  • Potentially updated screen for Express

Wonder how much someone would charge to do all these things as a 1 stop shop kind of deal. I'd be really nervous about sending my prized system out in the mail, but some of this work would just increase enjoyment.
#126
Very interesting!

My TGCD has had that loading noise issue since day 1 back in like 1990. I always thought that's just the way that it is until last year a friend of mine bought a TGCD from Craigslist and it was completely silent. We both thought it was weird as the only TGCD we'd heard up until then was mine.

How difficult is the fix? Especially with a better sound system this is more noticeable and actually kind of annoying.
#127
Any update on the project?
#128
There were plenty of things that contributed to the downfall of the system, but I think these are the big ones:

Crap Marketing: I saw exactly 2 TV commercials for the Turbo during its height. And I was living in the Seattle area, not exactly a tiny market
Crap Box Art: Come on! When you placed Turbo boxes next to Genesis they looked downright retarded. I think box art alone drove plenty of people to the Genesis when given the choice.
Crap Pack In: Take this with a grain of salt. I really like KC, I really do. BUT as a packin to show off the system, not the best. Probably should have been KC and 1 other game. Maybe Blazing Lazers, and certainly Bonk later.

Even at 12 or so I knew these things were fucked up and probably could have ran their marketing division in the US better than they did. They should have translated and brought over way more Japanese games, especially RPGs. That's what I wanted more than anything else at the time, and while we did have some good ones, there just weren't enough. They also should should have quit fucking with the Japanese box/cover art, replace the Japanese text with English and leave well enough alone. There have been plenty of threads about this topic, so I'll leave it at that.
#129
There were several factors that did it for me. For one compared to the NES the colors and graphics at the time in 1989 were mind blowing. I also read everything I could get my hands on about the TG16 and the PCE in EGM, GamePro, etc and was impressed by everything that I saw. Many of the Japanese games that were supposedly coming to the US seemed awesome (too bad most never panned out) and the CD system really upped the ante on everything else out there (when I got mine for Christmas in 1990 it was a HUGE deal for me and my friends). As mentioned I also kinda liked picking the underdog. It also had more unique games than the SNES and Genesis IMO, and sports titles do nothing for me, so the draw for that on the Genesis was nil for me.

If the system hadn't been plagued by horrible marketing in the US, and had more developer support I think it could have been big like the PCE. I'll be a rabid fan of the system forever.

Also as a side note, when idiots refer to the Sega CD as the first CD based game system it really chaps my ass.

I still look, check out shops and eBay, but I usually buy pretty slow, while there are plenty of TG16 games that I want, I'm usually willing to wait for a good deal.

Right now I have 77 US games, a handful of imports, my original TG16 from 1989, my original TGCD from 1990, an Express (needs repair though) and other accessories for the Turbo. By my count I still need 61 titles to complete my US collection (if I include the Hawiian girls discs). While I'd like to complete the collection, I doubt that will ever happen, and besides, trying to find a good deal on the old games is part of the fun really.
#132
I just pre-ordered. I think that the cover art looks pretty good in its current mock up form, and am really looking forward to the game!

Missing from my collection, count me in.
#134
I still have my original console that I got for Christmas in 1989. My parents got it at the Fred Meyer in Marysville, WA. Got the CR ROM the next year, which I think she either got from Fred Meyer again or from the Toys R Us is Everett, WA.
#135
Will these be typical of other released homebrews, printed on CDs and with manual and case? Are there pictures of what we could expect the finished product to be? Very ready to pre-order this, but just want to see what I'd be getting media and packaging wise.

Quote from: guest on 07/20/2011, 11:15 PMHahaha... ya i like Meguiars, its what i use on my car :)
I always Meguiars on my cars, favorite polishes and waxes by far.

We have a game store in town that does resurfacing. I had a buddy that took a Bonk 3 CD that he traded for recently on another forum that wouldn't play at all to the shop, after the resurface runs perfect.
#137
May have to try this on a few. I noticed that Sapphire's sound effects seemed to be way too loud compared to the music.
#138
I may have to order some of those as a backup. I don't have many games without sleeves, but the ones that don't drive me crazy.
#139
Hudson, Red and Falcom, in no real particular order.
#140
There are great games on both formats, so I can't ignore either one. My favorite system of all time, so I'll keep collecting and playing everyting.
#141
I personally consider Manual, Game, Sleeve (HuCard) and case to be complete. Perhaps if I had originally saved all the boxes I'd care, but now as long as it is complete without the box I'm good.

I also play everything, so sealed games don't have much value for me, unless I could get a sealed Magical Chase or something, I'd let that one sit in the box  :)
#142
Pretty much all of the US art was total crap, and partly to blame for the TG16 marketing failure. When looking at some of the lame covers that the games had, it's no wonder that more people looked at Genesis art and went that direction. Even at 12 in 1989 I could have made better decisions about what art to use on the game boxes and covers, and bemoaned it constantly even as a kid.

The smart (and likely cheaper way) way to market the games would have been to make small icon tweaks and English translations to the Japenese art and just release it here. Overall just another example of how the marketing arm of NEC in the US was bad at best, criminally negligent at worst
#144
Nope, that place is long gone as well. Only thing that annoyed me was that when he sold it, if he'd called me I'd have payed double what he got for it...oh well.
#145
Quote from: nat on 03/18/2011, 07:43 PMI'm in Lake Stevens. You're probably no more than 15 minutes from me.
Ah, small world! I have a friend that lived up there forever too. Sold all his turbo stuff years ago to a place in Marysville for like $100. I could have killed him when I found out, especially since one of the games was Beyond Shadowgate. It was a Duo and like 9-10 games and controllers, tap, etc.
#146
I lived up in Marysville, north of Everett at the time...and oddly, after being in the military, living in Germany and then Arizona, I'm back in Marysville LOL.
#147
Quote from: guest on 03/15/2011, 10:26 PMI dont care if the PCE shoots rainbows out its white f@cking huey slot, it is not my black TG16, the system i wanted way back when i was a kid, so now i have and have spent very little cash on it.

Let up a bit would ya zeta on tg16 hate.... geeeeez :(
I agree with this. I have a few PCE games and I like them, but there is something to be said for collecting the US stuff. I've got 72 US games now and 9 Japanese games. There are still a few more PCE only games that I'd love to get, but of course those always seem to be the pricey ones.

I've been collecting and playing the TG16 since 1989, so I've been patient with my collection and am generally willing to wait out prices until I find a good one. I may never complete my collection because of Magical Chase (unless somehow I find it out in the wild), and I'm unwilling to pay $200+ for some of the other titles that are over priced right now, but eventually I'm sure I'll get pretty close.

Also as a side note, I know that my parents got me both my TG16 and the CDROM the next year from Fred Meyer in WA.

Quote from: guest on 02/15/2011, 04:27 PMThis little bit of stupidity really takes the cake: $49 opening price ($99 BIN) for an alleged factory error where a Final Lap Twin label was applied to a Keith Courage case.  First off, who gives a shit?  Second, I bet it's homemade.  And third, who give a shit?!?
I am 99% sure that this is a Sparky label that someone put on a KC case. I have a set of the stickers here with me at work, looked at the Final Lap Twin sticker and they look identical, except that one is a bit roughed up.
#149
I've known Phades a long time and will vouch. Any item purchased will arrive as described, in working order and packaged well.

The system in question is in good condition, and plays well, probably better than my own setup truthfully. I would not hesitate to deal with Phades.
#150
That's great news! Hope to see some more reviews when you're feeling better Chris.
