10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

I have the same one.  I'd love a cover for it and possible something to make the reset button easier to use.

Got both of these from the Konami booth at the CES show in Chicago back in the mid 90's.  CES is long gone and now it's what we all know as the E3 show.

Some pick ups.

Got Ar Nosurge Plus in a trade.  Plan on playing this one when I'm stranded at the in-laws for three days at Christmas.  Wife said I had to remain sober with her family this year.  :(

Semisphere is a very different puzzle game from anything else I have played. Lots of thinking on this one, but very enjoyable.....the sound track is so relaxing it puts you to sleep.  It did come with a soundtrack CD that I'm going to burn a copy of it for my alarm clock and use it as a white noise machine.

Curse of Castilla is a great Ghouls N' Ghost style game.  Sound track sounds like it came straight off the Sega Genesis.  Enjoying this one a lot.  Highly recommended.

Axiom Verge.  I thought long and hard about buying this on either the Switch or the Vita.  I already had it digitally on the Vita from some sale Sony did a while back.  I hated the touch controls the Vita version used on the corner of the screen for certain abilities.  I settled on the Switch version instead for the larger screen and the extra buttons the controller.

Was at the VGS here in Chicagoland today.  Got smoked by Dan and the rest of the gang in the Battle Loadrunner tournament today.

Thought I would share some pics with ya'll.  Prices on on retro stuff continues to amaze me.  I doubt there will ever be a crash, but I do think there will be a market 'correction' or some kind of reset for some of these titles.  Quite a bit of TG16/PCE stuff for sale...much more than was at the Midwest Gaming Classic.

Anyway here they are:

EDIT:  Photobucket problems.

EDIT2:  Lets try this again.

Finally found a Switch in stock at Target so I took the plunge.  Been looking for Jaki Crush for a long time and found a decent price on it.  I think Devil's Crush is still the best in the series, but this one is still good.  Just got Darksiders in the mail today and have not tried it yet.

Most of this stuff I got at MGC.  I'm having a lot of fun collecting for the Vita.  So many nitch and unusual games for the system.

The fighter sticks were both new-unused in the box still sealed in the baggie, despite the extensive shelf wear on the box.

Zelda is gonna keep me busy for a while.  I've only finished the starting area and just for to the first stable.

I've been wanting to pick up a copy of Nexr for a while, but whenever I see one, the price is $180 and up usually....if you do find one less than that, its in very piss poor shape.  When PCEWorks announced this new set, I jumped on it.  I wasn't expecting it to include the Summer Carnival 93' as the second disc so that was a nice surprise.  Same with the repro of Dungeon Master that came with the set.  I will say, the quality here on everything is top notch.  I've always been impressed with the quality that PCEWorks put out and it shines with everything I've ever purchased from them.

Can someone explain the whole Steam Hearts story line to me?  Wasn't expecting the story board artwork to be so.....um......yeah.....

Runbow is like relay race style Super Smash Brothers on crack.  Up to nine players at once.  Super fast paced and crazy...  Great party game and well worth picking up.

Never played the Steamworld games before, but am enjoying both of them.  Definitely plan on finishing both of them soon.

Oddworld Stranger's Wraith is a pleasant surprise and a lot of fun.  Never heard of it until Limited Run Games decided to put it out.  I think its a higher quality game than most of the titles they publish.  Dialogue is hilarious the way the characters talk.

The Art of Atari is amazing.  Highly worth checking out, even if you just flip through it at the bookstore.

Not that impressed with One Way Heroics.  I was hoping for a more Zelda/Neutopia clone, but it just seems to play a bit slower and the controls are clunky.  Probably will dump it on ebay sometime...

Was also hoping for some voice lines out of the Loonytunes game, but nothing.  Not even a 'That's All Folks!"  The mini games on it seem like ports of IOS games you can get for free off the Apple store.

Other than those two titles, I'm happy with the purchases.

I was browsing fleebay a week ago and saw this on a newly posted Buy it now.  Paid 35.00 shipped for it.  Not sure what they go for and I rarely see them.  Thought it would go well with my Shuttle.  Now I just need a HuCard that writes to backup memory to test it with.

I've had both of these tapes for over 20 years.  The one with the orange label has all the previews of import games at the end of it.  I don't even have a VHS player anymore.

Eliminate Down and Megaman are repros from AliExpress.  Kirby is a fun game despite looking like a game for young kids - very bright and colorful.  The psp games I found used at a pawnshop.

IMG

Half of these I got in trades.  Oddworld was from Limited Run Games.  Finally gave in and bought Darius & Dead or Alive from Play Asia since the used copies I found were priced just as much as the new copies.

IMG

The Gameboy SP is a russian made clone system from Aliexpress.  Build quality is just as nice as an official Nintendo SP.  The screen is just as bright, if not brighter than the AGS-101.  I also got it new for a fraction of the price of a used AGS-101 system.  Only downside is that the battery is not removable unless you open the system up and it charges through a usb cable.  No big deal as I use the ac adapter on my Samsung phone to charge it.  Highly recommend it.  It also came with a 999 in 1 game cart.  About 50 GBA roms on, the rest are a mix of NES and chinese home brew games with a lot of duplicates titles.

Here are my pickups for the past couple of months.

IMG

IMG

Purchased these from AliExpress.  The 386 in 1 for the Gameboy advance has some very neat titles on it, but also has some crap along with it.  There is a hack of the TG-16 Bonks Adventure on it that's very unique and fun to play.  I'd say 70% of the games on it are NES/Famicom roms and hacks.  Hagane is a repro.

IMG
IMG

More from Aliexpress.  The 150 in one is worth buying, hardly any crap on it.  There is a whole message thread about it over at the DigitPress site along with a complete list of games with it.  I have not messed around with the 400 in one too much.....its got a few gems on it, but at half of it is mostly weird/poor quality Chinese games on it.  It does have the faimicom game Thexder on it which is something I wanted to play on the NES for a while now.  I have not played the two famicom multi cards yet as I'm still waiting for my 60 to 72 pin converter to arrive.

Musha, Pulse Man and Bare Knuckle 3 are repros.  Quality is so-so.

IMG
IMG

Picked up Super Mario World:  Return to Dinosaur Park at the MWC this weekend.  Supposedly its the best hack of Super Mario World.  So I'm told.  I have not had a chance to try it yet.  Crackdown is not that great of a game, but I remember playing it a lot back in the day and I got it cheap.

IMG

More from MWC.  Finally got a copy of Mega Man Powered Up for my PSP collection.  I loved Iron Tank when I was a kid.  To me, the best part of Ikari Warriors was when you could drive a tank.  In Iron Tank you are the tank!  Just wish it was two players at the same time.  Looking forward to playing through it again.

Was at the Midwest Gaming Classic yesterday.  Met a few of the forum members while I was there....Braap, Chop, Dragon Master Dan, and the guy who came up from North Carolina....sorry I didn't catch your name, but it was great chatting with you!

It was a little early on Saturday when these were taken, but the room filled up in the afternoon.

Braap showed me this repro of Magical Chase while I was there.  A lot of love when into designing and creating it - a very high quality repro that anyone would love to have in their collection!

This may be a little off topic, but they had that recently discovered Sony Super Nintendo CD system on display.  Got a few pics of that as well.

IMG
IMG
IMG

And below is the most expensive game that I saw in the vendor area.
IMG

Id say there was a stronger presence of PCE/Turbo games in the vendor area this year as opposed to last year.  Some of the games seemed to be priced a bit much...  Saw complete in case copies of Splatterhouse and Devils Crush going for $100.00 each.  A sealed Neutopia 2 going for $270.00.  I was hoping to find a used copy w/instructions while I was there.  :(  I spent my money on other gaming stuff which I'll put in the recent pickups thread later on today.  Overall, I had a great time!

Looking to sell my PC Engine LT as I hardly ever play it.  It is complete in box with the instructions, blue baggie, Styrofoam packing, and original AC adapter.

*All capacitors were changed out by form member Chop about a year ago.
*Sound is nice and loud.
*Screen brightness adjustment works perfectly.
*No dead pixels.  No scratches on the screen.
*I have a spare Official PC Engine AC adapter that is included.   (not shown)
*box does show minor shelf wear

The screen looks much better in person that the photos show - better color depth and brightness  (my camera isn't the greatest under florescent lights).  I'll be at the Midwest Gaming Classic next weekend if anyone wants to see it in person as I can bring it along.

I'm asking $925.00 which is what I have in it.  I'd like to see this go to a member here before I put it on ebay.

*Batman game is not included*

Been a while since I posted in this thread.  This is everything for the past four months.  Not pictured is a used copy of Double Dragon for the Gameboy Advance that I found up in Green Bay WI.  Work has had me on the road and working crazy hours so I have not been able to play games much.  Got lucky being at the right place at the right time to pick up Devil's Third and Giana Sisters.

Was expecting Chibi Robo to play more like a Castlevania game....but I'm still enjoying it.  Can't wait for Axiom Virge to hit the Vita, but it looks like it will only be digital download only.  :(

I was to poor to own one back in the day so im glad to finally have one :)

One of my favorite handhelds back in the day.  And it seems that the games for it are very reasonably priced.  Try hunting down Warbirds and Gates of Zendicon!  I spent a lot of time playing those back in the day!

I found these two joysticks on ebay two years ago.  Never seen them before or since then.  They are brand new, but the boxes on both show some shelf wear.  They say PC Engine on them and have the Japanese style controller plug, but the company address is based in NY.

Anyone seen these before?

Playing a lot of MK8 trying to unlock everything.  Having a lot of fun with it!  I'm getting my ass kicked in Super Smash Brothers though....its a very tough game to pick up if you have never played any of the previous titles.

Quote from: guest on 10/17/2014, 11:38 AMIMG

Well this showed up in my mailbox the other day pretty much exactly 13 months from the date I ordered it.

Quick Review:
Build quality is super solid and I commend them for delivering such a good package in the end.  The cartridge shell is brand new and custom imprinted with Super Fighter Team badging, manual was crisp, and the tray looked pretty good.  Two edges on the tray had been pushed in from what I'm assuming was the cart moving around during shipping, but I was able to pull them back out easily enough.

I played the game for quite a bit last night and it looks very good graphically, overall gameplay is a bit weak in my opinion.  The game has some very cheap enemies and scenarios that can get frustrating fast.  One part has you falling down a pit with stuff coming from all over the place with not very much time to react, and seems to encourage needing to memorize exactly where you need to be on every bit of the screen.  (Think of the falling levels in Mega Man 2 with the instant-kill lasers).

I was playing on easy mode and had fun, but there were times where it seems like you would just get stuck in a loop of continual deaths.  The power ups were also a cool addition to how the game played, but I would not play this one without a controller that has a turbo option.

Overall:
Package: A
Gameplay: B/B-
I'm still waiting for mine to show up.  Did they send you an email letting you know that it was shipped?  I'm a little worried that they are sending it to my old address than my new one, despite them saying they got my new address.  Email responses from those guys are a little slow.

Never thought I would own one of these, but now I do.  Box is in OK shape.  Definitely signs of shelf wear, but the system is immaculate.  Even the serial number on the instruction manual matches the serial number on the bottom of the unit.  I think I got a deal on the system, but it was more that I really wanted to spend.  The wife would kill me if she knew what I spend on it.
