12/23/2024: Localization News - Team Innocent

PC-FX Localization for Team Innocent is released, a pre-Christmas gift!! In a twist, it feels like the NEC PC-FX got more attention in 2024 than any other time I can remember! Caveat: The localizers consider the "v0.9" patch a BETA as it still faces technical hurdles to eventually subtitle the FMV scenes, but they consider it very much playable.

Messages - Carbon Tiger

Nice site guys. The PC Engine really is an underrated gem as a whole in the gaming world and seeing it get it's just praise always pleases me. :)

Quote from: CkRtech on 03/30/2008, 08:44 PMCarbon Tiger - Thanks for the write-up. That is a lot of good information. I remember seeing something about Neotopia. It was probably a post on a message forum and was most likely pcenginefx. I like your term "stupidly overpriced." There are a lot of items on ebay that fetch way too much money. People on message boards tend to be a lot more fair than ebay when it comes to buy/sell/trade. The ironic thing is that message boards oftentimes contribute to the hype that causes prices to go up on ebay. It's a funny thing - this internet world of ours.
Yeah it is. But really when I see Neo II going for $50-$70 on eBay it just amazes me. Dynastic Hero I once saw break 100...let's not even get started on Cotton or any of the impossibly hard to find stuff. I mean it's gotten to the point where idiot sellers are over charging for stuff that isn't even that rare.

I've gotten some good deals on eBay from the Japan sellers but the best deals I've ever gotten for this system is on this board.

QuoteIf a game exists in English, I wouldn't mind trying to land the English version. Of course when games go for that much money, it is tough to fork over the cash for something you plan to give a try.
Right and not all the games go for ridiculous amounts of cash either but there is more you gotta wait/get lucky on getting them for a fair price then there probably should be.

QuoteSo I'm still trying to figure out exactly how you feel about YsIV. j/k. Seriously though - That English patch thing sounds really cool. Roms get patches all the time, but it's not like people can write out their own ROM to play a NES or SNES game or something on the official hardware. Patching an RPG for English and then loading it up on the "real thing" sounds totally sweet.
It is. I found my old briefcase CD/PC-E set up to be real touchy about what CD-Rs it would load. It really can vary a bit. I had to try a few brands and I've read some people it loads up no problem others have to fiddle a bit with the burning process/medium.

YsIV is totality worth it imo I think the game was fantastic it took everything from Ys I &II that worked and polished it to a mirror shine.

QuoteI actually do own Valis 3, but it is for Genesis. Is there much of a difference?
I'd say the PC-E version has smoother graphics, much better music and a better presentation. Play wise their about the same I'd say but I'm sure some would disagree. :)

QuoteThat's quite a list you provided. Appreciate it - once again.
No problem glad to help.

Hello CkRtech. Welcome to the party.

Out of the lot you scored I'm familiar with

-Populous The Promised Lands

What can I say it's Populous :) It's as fun as it always is and played the same as it did on every other system. Not a mega must own but a fun game that's cool to have.

-Neo Metal Fantasy

This one I got because Black Tiger proclaimed it's greatness and then was kind enough to provide a walk through of the game. Reminded me of Phantasy Star fun game and seemingly under rated for some reason. Very playable in that old school way.

You say your an RPG guy. If you don't mind stumbling around Japanese RPGs aided by a walk through there's quite a few good ones on the PC-E. The entire Far East of Eden series is easy to find for cheap prices (really I think I got all three for around $25) and has walk through online and is mega fun once you get into it. Then there's stuff like Legend of Xanadu II which while somewhat harder to find is an amazing game to look upon and play. Probably a bunch of other good stuff I'm missing but that's off the top of my head.

For the English/Japanese RPG stuff (be prepared to be driven insane by price comparison):

-Neutopia I/II

I beat the Japanese versions of both of these games. They also tend to go cheap ($8-10) with the American versions being overpriced and part II entering the realm of stupidly overpriced on Ebay. If you can find them in English and not break your bank account getting them by all means do so :) But the Japanese versions are playable on their own and part 1 is damn near idiot proof. It plays exactly like Legend of Zelda complete with bombs, healing potions and so on. If you've played Zelda you can play this. Heck even the plot's the same...

-Y's 1&2

Get this in English if you can. I've seen Ebay drive up this game but if your calm and lucky you can get an English copy without selling a kidney. I think I got mine for $20 which for a game of this quality is worth it. I also own the Japanese version (I'm an Ys geek) still playable but the game has a good plot and the American version is well translated. I can't over rate this game enough.

-YsIII

The Zelda II of the Ys series. I like it but several folk wish for it's death. Not a horrific game but not the best in the series either. Kinda short, has scrolling issues, weird difficulty curve... Price comparison USA $50+ Japanese version $7-$10. But yeah that's normal as you can see. When it comes to this game I play the Japanese version with a script copy laying near by. The American version is not that well translated imo and the voice acting makes me prey for the sweet embrace of the abyss.

-YsIV

BUY. NOW. There's only a Japanese version but there was a fan translation so make an iso of your game disk and patch the iso and you have a lovely copy of Ys IV in English you can now burn on a blank CD. This game is awesome. Fantastic animation a pretty good plot and amazingly playable. Yeah it's non canon but so what it's Ys shinning hour imo. Gaming has rarely been this fun for me (continues to over hype Ys 4)

-Cosmic Fantasy 2

Another you really should get it in English games. Ebay hasn't driven this one to insane prices yet...last time I looked anyway. Very fun little RPG. A lot of people like it I dug it myself. Part one was only released in Japan but is easy to play due it one being short, two mostly linear and three having a walk through online. CF2 is a much better game.

-Might and Magic III

Never seem then English version go for a price that wasn't insane. Apparently this game is rare. :) I don't own a copy of it in either language. One of those games I'd imagine you'd HAVE to play in a language you understand due to it being a big wall of text...

-Dungeon Master: Theron's Quest

I own it but never played it much I need to get on that...

-Dungeon Explorer I/II

Own the Japanese version of part 1 not much text to speak of and playable in any language imo. It's Gauntlet's best possible big cousin. Part II is part one but prettier, more anime cut scenes, and more levels, awesome game. For some reason over priced on eBay way past it's real market value. Get it from here: http://www.japangamestock.com/ these folks eat my wallet...

-Dragon Slayer

I own the US copy of this one. Another one of those that ranges from fairly priced to utterly batshit on Ebay (see Ys same deal as that game). It's a wonderfully old school RPG that if you play it right is no cake walk but shouldn't destroy you. Be prepared to bash for loot like any good old RPG. Fantastic cut scenes and a great opening. The American version is sadly plagued by some legendary awful voice acting. Luckily there isn't much of it. The awful voice acting will either make your ears bleed or amuse you endlessly.

-Dynastic Hero

Wonderboy~! side scrolling action RPG. Same drill as before American version $ = THIS IS MADNESS~! Japanese version goes for $9 welcome to the wonderful world of collecting games for this thing :) Would be easier in English but the game isn't that dialogue heavy for what it is. I do recall needing a walk through for some parts however.

~~~~~~
-Yes you should buy Gunhed wait never mind seems you own it already :) and Lords of Thunder and Salamander (side shooter) and also Super Star Soldier. Can't forget R Type either if you like a side shooter format...seriously if you not a fan of shooters this system will make you one on the sole basis that it has so many good shooters for it. You'll never tire of shoot em ups as long as you have a PC-E.
-Valis is interesting. I'd say if your going to get any of em III is the best. It has the most playablity out of the whole series aside from the normal great cut scenes and good look of the series. II as said has some rocking music but it's by the numbers.
For other side scrollers can't go wrong with Legendary Axe I and II, Adventure Island (Dragon's Curse in the US), Takahashi Meijin no Shin Boken Jima (New Adventure Island in the US) and ahh what else...oh Ninja Gaiden has a great version for the PC-E and thanks to a code on the title screen you can play it in English and the translation is pretty good to be honest.
And no collection is complete without the PC Genjin/Bonk  games.
Man this fool had it coming.
Gentlemen you did great work for the gaming community as a whole.  :)
#5
Let's see currently hooked up to my TV.
-Atari 2600
-Sega Master System
-Dreamcast
-PC Engine Briefcase CD version
-X Box 360
-Wii
I would say the only stuff I 'collect' for is the PC-E and the SMS. :)
The SMS has a surprisingly strong catalogue of games if you know were to look and buy European releases to make up for the weak US release count. I never had a Gamecube so the Wii's backwards compatibility has me buying a bunch of pretty good cheap games I never got to play. Ditto for the XB360 playing Xbox 1 games although that compatibility sorta sucks being it's only 50%.
Used to have a NES and an SNES but those were lost in a flood with several games.
Also have an N64 that's not hooked up and a PS2 that's broken. My PS1 died years ago but I still play it's games on my computer.
I've never bought anything from these guys, but it looks like they have sleeves for sale. Check it out:
http://www.goatstore.com/info.php?id=451990
I've dealt with The Goat Store before and it went well. They respond personally to emails and often very fast. Their shipping is pretty good as I recall I got what I ordered in a week or so.
#7
Interested in Salamander and Super Star Soldier.
How does $25 plus shipping sound ?
#8
(watching auctions for laughs)
Yep and Ys III just jumped to $51 and we just reached nutty. I've never seen the American copy go beyond $30 before on Ebay and the Japanese copy goes for like $10 on average. I like to collect but is the idea of the game being sealed in plastic really worth the probably $100+ this thing is going to go for ?
Once you open it it's down to the average price of a 'used' copy. I just don't get it unless you resell it unopened during a period where no other cheaper copies are on sale. That game while not common comes up about every two months on ebay...the average person who wants to play the game isn't going to pay this much.
Makes me wonder about some of these 'bids'
#9
I feel sympathy for anyone trying to buy American games for this system on ebay. I managed not to get gouged too bad on the 4 USA games I own but for anyone trying to build a collection off of the USA only releases. I've done the math and its probably anywhere for 2x to 3x as much as their Japanese counter parts.
That's supply and demand I guess. Doesn't mean its fair or even a good reflection of true market value. Still I think I'm going to watch the ebay sales just to see how crazy it gets. If it doesn't get too nutty I might snag something but I doubt the prices will even stay sane.
I mean I consider Japangamestock.com to be a bit pricey vs. the three ebay stores I use for PCE stuff and even they have Exile going for $13.51.........so I'll guess we'll see.
#10
(chuckles)
Don't see ads like that any more :)
#11
Damn Michael sorry to hear that.........
This is on TZD's head. They didn't check their own stock period they messed up. In my case I got two games I wanted pretty cheap. I like everyone else in this thread didn't get their copy of Forgotten Worlds. Now I'm not returning the order but I'm not doing business with them again.
As for some saying well if you wanted so bad why didn't you buy it earlier ? Well that's not my fault or is it anyone else's fault in this thread that's in the same boat as me. TZD listed stock they didn't have it's their fault 100% being lazy or disorganized is not an excuse if this was any other game seller we'd be calling for their head. It's not my job to make sure they count their own stock right. On another note I can get Forgotten Worlds easily enough from Japan. It isn't about the game. It's about doing business right.
Quote from: mark p on 11/05/2007, 07:25 PMHrrrm. tzd still hasn't responded to the email I sent on Friday . They must be really busy sorting out the FUBAR'd orders. :mrgreen:
(snicker)
Yeah I hope it works out for all parties as best as it can really. Having got my order minus a game, but hey honestly I'm not that upset. Having two brand new sealed TG 16 CD games is kinda cool it almost makes me not wanna open em..........almost :) These will likely be the only new games I'll ever get for this system.
Quote from: guest on 11/05/2007, 06:15 PMI think we are all well aware of TZD's history, and I for one am quite grateful that they've been around for as long as they have (even though my customer service experience has been less than stellar).  I don't mind that they pulled the Expresses from this sale, but few would disagree that it's bad form to state something to the effect of "Last chance, buy me now!" on an item only for them to 'find' a few more and pull the same thing a year later.  Nor is it good business to tell someone over the phone that stock is plentiful, when in reality it is not.  Insane?  I think not.
Agreed. I respect what TZD has done over the years and the service they provided to a good game system and a good group of fans. I don't think they were out to screw anyone or steal anyone's cash. However, when you list a product for sale that you apparently don't have or don't have much of that's when trouble starts. I have college degree in business (or will in about 9 months) but if your going to do a sell first thing you do is check your stock. This is 101 level stuff and flatly common sense. They should have checked what they had then made an announcement.
They earned a little bit of negative feedback for this, just because they exist does not exempt them from negative feedback. Business is very much a case of what have you done for me lately, for better or worse this is often how it is. I'm not calling them crocks or anything but they didn't handle this in the best way.
Do I respect what they do ? Yeah I do. But that doesn't make them blameless when they goof.
..........yeah and that site thing is weird  :-k
#14
Well no Forgotten Worlds for me. Considering I ordered 10 minutes after the email went out this proves they had no copies of that game and if they did have copies not enough to include them in this sale. No email, phone call or anything. On the other hand they did give me half off on the games I did order so it wasn't like I got cheated and I did want the games I received. Plus they were shipped fast.
So I think I'll keep what I got and won't return it. However if they survive this clearance I won't be buying from them again. I don't have much tolerance for stuff like this.
#15
Quote from: spoiler king on 11/04/2007, 10:23 AMIt'd be a pretty dishonorable way to go out....fucking with the fans/longtime supporters. I think there's a good chance the sale just went beyond their expectations.
That would indeed be dishonourable.
To TZD. If you have a product in limited amounts/stock you note that and warn the customer or list what you really have. I placed my order about 7 minutes after getting the email. Now I'm yet to hear anything from TZD concerning  order problems, maybe I got lucky. I hope they got it right I really do. But even if they didn't mess up my order I'm still steamed that they messed up so many other people's orders. That's no way to do business.
And if they did mess up my order their getting it back.
Dude, that's fucking crazy. Like 10 or 15 minutes before you posted that message (after I posted my last one) I had checked the TZD page and Forgotten Worlds was still there.
Fuck, now J.B. Harold is gone too. That was one I was planning on buying. This is nuts.
Yeah either this sale has every PC-E/Turbo owner crawling out of the woodwork or they didn't have that much stock left....
#18
Forgotten Worlds  looks to be gone too. Good thing I got it when I did.
I do hope the people buying stuff up are gamers because I'd like to think that people are enjoying these purchases and not just looking to ebay hoard. I'm surprised it took Lords of Thunder this long to sell out but then again the game is such a classic most of us have a copy by now I'd wager.
But the driving up of the price is the reason I have so few American Turbo CD games. I think the only ones I have are Cosmic Fantasy II, Dragon Slayer, Ys Book I/II and LOT. I wouldn't mind getting more but its hard to justify the price gouging. The Japanese versions are far cheaper and that includes shipping.
On the one hand good sellers in Japan on ebay have made my collection grow easily and with very little price insanity. On the other hand some American sellers have made some games out to be worth more then they are. I guess it's a two sided coin with ebay and it depends on who is doing the selling.
Back to the topic at hand this might be TZD's swan song I dunno what's gonna be left after this one.
(Insert joke about 9 million copies of Turbo Golf)
Buster Brothers
Forgotten Worlds
When you got KOd by Drax and shipped back to the fort their should be a shopkeeper in a formerly empty shop. He's a keymaker he'll give you the clay item you go and make an imprint of the door lock in the tower and then go back to the fort with the impression to continue the plot line and the game :)
Sol Moonarge.........never heard of that one and considering I already have a ton of PC-E RPGS I may have to add it to the collection. Sounds fun and from the screenshots looks different then a lot of other games too.
A tough call. I've played way too many great games...................Final Fantasy VI (SNES) gets my vote.
But I gotta through out some geek love for Ys I&II, Ys IV (PCE Version of course) and Dragon Quest III :)
#29
Yeah this game never did 'work' imo. Out of all the sim games it seems to make the least amount of sense and be the most random. Even when you get an idea of what you should be doing the game still doesn't come together right, it never feels like you have a good handle on things. If your a real nut about any sim game you might like it but imo (and I like sim games) you can avoid this one. Your not missing much.
#30
Sometimes on ebay you get a good deal. You got a lot of good fun coming your way   :)
#31
I just want to randomly throw in that Cowboy Bebop is one of the greatest shows ever made imo. So many good episodes. There isn't much slow down in the series either maybe 1 or 2 bad episodes but the rest is pure classic.
#32
I know the net has everything that ever existed and then some, heck I've got a wide mix of weird only the internet could provide stuff...... But even I gotta wonder where do some people FIND this stuff ?  =P~ That card looks like it was dropped into a mixer full of ground up cigars.
#33
I've always found Batman on the PCE to be solid enough. It is what it is and plays well. I didn't go in expecting an action game and I knew it played a bit like Bomerman. That being said I do enjoy the music and the game responds well and the challenge is at an even pace. Interesting final boss battle too. While not an A+ title it's still far better then this review gives it credit for. So yeah I like the game and for what the developers were trying to do they mostly pulled it off.
This is by far NOT the worst Batman game.
My .2 cents as it were.
So any PC-E fan out there with sharp eyes who can tell me what these games are and if their any good
I own it and played it a bit. It is a very good game. Good art, a few nice cut scenes and very playable. It's an old school RPG and kind of reminds me of Phantasy Star II.
Does he not bother to search ebay at all and see the same product on sale for 1/8th the price. This guy is either a crook, a moron, or has no idea of the value of the object he's trying to sell. Personally I think its a blend of being a crook and being a fruit of the stupid tree.
#50
Yeah I mean in all honesty it's cheaper to get a 2nd system. The CD games are universal no matter what your running (US Turbo CD or any of the 5 or so Japan versions) so the only difference is the Hucard games. I've seen PC Core Graphx go for pretty cheap for just the systems.
Modding is also a good idea and STILL cheaper then a converter.
