What Nintendo should do, and perhaps there's some kind of economic reason why they can't do this, but they should sell these on their own site.  Put up a preorder page, let everyone who wants one fill out an order, and then make them on demand.  They can't be that expensive to manufacture, and they would make a killing.

I mean, am I crazy, or would this not solve every issue that's cropped up on this?

Yup. But I thought you were talking about the Wii for DVD load times and it appears that everyone is just going Nintendo fanboy at this point.

Quote from: SignOfZeta on 07/11/2017, 03:55 PMI never said it was a good DVD player. It literally cannot be a good DVD player because it takes 3" discs only, you fucking herb.
Smoke 'em if you got 'em. But seriously, I'm not a fucking idiot. I know this. Again, this was edited to reference the Wii because everyone is just gushing about a whole bunch of off-topic shit. :D
The Wii doesn't play DVDs either...

While there are some subtle differences in the color palette (it's mostly just brighter), some of the graphics seem more detailed on Sega CD (the jacket on Gibson, individual strands of hair on Mika, etc).

Kojima in pc-88 and horrible port from msx,
He was super limited by the machine and the result is not what he wanted and had thought, is more is horribly slow to play and lacks all the main explanation of the argument.

Pc engine is a game  That kojima wanted to do, already with fame and freedom from create, Your game, no limitations.

Sega cd is only a big shit, not kojima, only bad port from usa and europa, censored, horrible colours typical, megadrive-megacd, shit cover design, shit new images not create kojima, shit instructions, shit case, typical disaster pal- and us game conversions japanese games of 90`.

Not compare snatcher pc engine, with same version of megacd. One is a original game of kojima, other only one bad port of konami.
Lol

Assuming you're going to retranslate any version of this, I think it would be more worth wile to translate the PC-88 version.  It's more historically significant since it's the actual original version.

EDIT:  A PCE adventure game I'd like to see retranslated that came out in English on Sega CD is Space Adventure Cobra  :-"

Quote from: SignOfZeta on 12/06/2015, 01:04 PMThat's weird, but IMO all versions of Ninja Gaiden are fucking garbage compared to the arcade. I only feel this way because that's what I spent my time playing. To me FC conversions of games like this, Strider, or Rygar were just weird bastard POS with teeny weeny low colored sprites and the addition of shops...last refuge of a doomed port. The Lynx ver of NG destroyed all other ports, IMO.

But most people actually played the shitty NES versions first and because of their experience I've come to see that, as fucked and cheap and weird as a NES port of Strider is, these sorts of ports are often actually pretty good in their own right, they are just completely different games and have to be understood as such to be appreciated.

I've never played the PCE Ninja Gaiden. I always assumed it would be shitty like the FC version. So what is the concensous here?
I think I asked you this before and you ignored me.  I want an explanation as to why NES Ninja Gaiden is "garbage", and the arcade version is so great.  Because it's easily the other way around for me.

Is it just because it's "not" the arcade game?  Because it wasn't intended to be.

Right.  So if I called you a retard, it wouldn't be an insult, but a diagnosis of your lack of mental function.

There's nothing worth thinking about here.  When you insult someone, especially for an asinine reason like this, it's always going to rub them the wrong way.

Everyone deals with things like this differently.  For example, when Zeta implied I was a racist for not wanting to play a visual novel in Japanese, a language I cannot read or speak, I just shrugged it off.  Some people are just more vocal than others.

Game Sack and Happy Console Gamer released videos today advertising these bootlegs as well.  HCG didn't even acknowledge the controversy.  Very disappointing.

From what I understand, the PS4 is not natively backward compatible with the PS3.  Like ParanoiaDragon stated, the "PlayStation Cloud" will be used to stream classic games for play on PS4.

That doesn't sit well with me.  I really don't think we're ready for streaming gaming.

Warren is just bitter because Disney shut his studio down.

I'm pretty sure David Cage preached this before, around the time Indigo Prophecy was released. David Jaffe posted a long counter argument to this on Twitter, which I largely agree with.  He clearly wants to work in film, but feels stuck in the games industry for some reason, and is lashing out because no one bought Heavy Rain.  We need more people making games who genuinely love games, and less movie-industry rejects whining about them.

Quote from: SignOfZeta on 02/08/2013, 04:49 AMOf course, once the NES really got going it too started to be flooded with horrendous ports of shit way beyond its grasp like Ikari Warriors, Heavy Barrel, and whatever the hell those Strider, Rygar and Ninja Gaiden things were supposed to be.
I agree with most of this, but I need some kind of explanation as to why Ninja Gaiden Arcade is better than Ninja Gaiden on NES.

General Gaming / Re: MegaMan style music
01/12/2013, 07:05 PM
Mega Man 2 was composed by Takashi Tateishi.  He also composed the music for Willow and LED Storm for the arcades and Side Arms Special on the PC Engine.  Sadly, he retired from composing after leaving Capcom in 1990.

Mega Man 3 was composed (mostly) by Yasuaki Fujita.  He also worked on Darkwing Duck (NES), The Little Mermaid (NES), Tenchi wo Kurau II (NES), Who Framed Roger Rabbit (GB), Final Fight 2 (SNES), Breath of Fire (SNES) and a few other non-descript mahjong and card games for the Super Famicom.  Also composed Solar Man's theme for the somewhat recent Mega Man 10.

General Gaming / Re: Wii soft modding
01/05/2013, 02:55 AM
Quote from: CGQuarterly on 01/02/2013, 11:03 PMI actually just soft-modded mine last night.  It's OK. I prefer my modded Xbox as it looks better on an HDTV.  The fact that the Wii only outputs 480p is a real downer.

Chris
The reason why the Wii is such a promising emulation box is because it can output in 240p resolution, which is ideal for SD displays.  With component cables, it is nearly the same as pure RGB.  I guess if you like your old games upscaled and filtered for HD displays, this isn't for you.

Anyway, thanks to that guide Bernie posted, I softmodded my Wii today and I'm incredibly impressed.  The NES, SNES, and Genesis emulators are phenomenal, and WiiMednafen runs PC Engine games very well!  I can't seem to get the games to load in RetroArch Wii for some reason, but that's my only gripe.

I really should have done this sooner.
#17
Anybody really familiar with the Virtual Console willing to post a list of games that are cropped and/or filtered?  Most of the Turbo and arcade games are, but at least a few of them aren't. Chase H.Q., Ys 1&2, DRacula X, and Final Soldier look great, but there doesn't appear to be any criteria for games that don't have this filter.

Arcade games have a similar problem.  Shinobi and Golden Axe look great, but that seems to be it.  I recently bought Gaplus, and the game plays in this tiny fucking window and is blurred to shit.   It actually affects the gameplay because I can't see what the hell I'm looking at.

Because I have a job. :)  Believe me, I was celebrating last night when I heard the news.

It's not a street gang warfare mentality.  It's being happy that an evil man who has killed many innocent Americans is now dead.

I can't believe I even need to explain this.  Would you have said the same thing when Hitler died if you were around then?

Quote from: guestIt's the same deal with many PCE "digital comic" games.
Well, for me, a digital comic is exactly that; the equivalency of reading a manga on your TV.  No interactivity beyond occasionally hitting a button to make the text scroll, which is just another way of "turning the page" essentially.  Stuff like Yuna or Bubblegum Crisis.  Come on, you know what I meant.

I guess a more appropriate term for Snatcher would be "Graphic Adventure".

QuoteEvery game "experience" isn't equal and a game like Snatcher is still very cool without understanding everything completely. It's funny that you specifically mentioned "exploration and discovery", because that is what you get more of when playing Japanese Digital Comic/Adventure/RPG/etc type games. It can be a chore if you're not into this type of game, but most people find this type of game a chore even when it is in their own language.
See, I just completely disagree with this.

For example, I own the Saturn version of Policenauts.  Despite the art, music, and story all being great, I can't play it for more than an hour, because I just get completely bored with it.  And it's not for a lack of appreciation for the genre.  I played through Junker HQ's translation of the PS1 version and enjoyed every minute of it.  It's just that, clicking through text screens I can't read, to get to cutscenes I can't understand, to get to an action/battle sequence that has no context, is extremely unfulfilling for me.   I'm not interested in having to make "educated guesses" about the plot.  There are plenty of Adventure and RPG games I love, but playing them in a different language is about as exciting as watching paint dry.

QuoteYou can enjoy the Sega-CD game to it's fullest, but it's not the same game. Especially when people put such an emphasis on the "real" story/experience, which was altered quite a bit from the PCE version and the voice acting is terrible. Especially when you hear how critical so many Turbo/PCE fans are of Sega-CD Lords of Thunder. If that game isn't the same, then the console Snatchers are radically different.
Really?  I know there were some graphical alterations, mostly to make the Snatchers look less like the Terminator, but nothing that significantly alters the experience.  All I know is, I played through the Sega CD version of Snatcher and enjoyed the experience very much.  Maybe the OP's lack of familiarity with the PC-Engine version will be beneficial in this case? :)
#26
Snatcher isn't really a digital comic.  It has way more in common with those point-and-click adventure games on PC from the 80's and early 90's.  The only difference is that it's entirely text-based (if you want to move forward, you literally type in: "move forward").  The PC-Engine/Sega CD version streamlined it for consoles so that you just select from a series of pre-selected options to do certain tasks.  In that way, it has a little more in common with a DC, but you're still exploring and adventuring rather than just reading a digital graphic novel.

Playing the Japanese version without any knowledge of Japanese serves no purpose, other than to admire the artwork.  If you're just going to follow a walkthrough step-by-step, you're missing half the experience of these types of games, which is exploration and discovery.  This is why I don't understand people who play these types of games when they don't understand the language.  Feeling your way around blindly until you randomly come across a solution just seems like a chore.

If you can, get the Sega CD version.  It's pricey, but you'll actually understand it and enjoy it to it's fullest.

There's nothing wrong with Donkey Kong Country.

I love this little snippet, though:

QuoteYou run right and occasionally jump while collecting about a trillion bananas.

I guess it's supposed to be a complaint against the design, but it basically sums up the design philosophy of every platformer ever from the 8 and 16-bit era's (just replace banana's with coins/rings/etc.)

I had no idea everyone hated IV so much.  I thought it was a blast; it's a tad on the easy side, yes, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.  After the NES installments, I appreciated the breezier pace.  Also, while I'm probably alone on this one, I like how it's completely linear, with no branching paths or extra playable characters.  I prefer straightforward when it comes to Castlevania.

I only played Bloodlines on an emulator.  Seemed alright.  Nothing special, but nothing to get overly critical about either.

Pretty much.

The appeal seems to be a combination of the gore and a nostalgia for the gore.  This was before the ESRB, and there was a certain edginess/coolness factor playing something like that back then.  The appeal is largely lost nowadays with the content in games today.

That's all I can figure anyway; I've never seen a convincing argument from a Mortal Kombat fan as to why the games are good.

Treasure has only made three shooters: Radiant Silvergun, Ikaruga, and Gradius V.  There was also the Silpheed remake on PS2, but that was a joint effort with Game Arts.  I think most shooter fans would agree that Bangai-O and Sin and Punishment are not "shmups".

As cool as it is that RS will be made available to everyone that doesn't have 200 dollars burning a hole in their pocket, I really wish Treasure would continue work on that original shooter being developed for 360.  The shooter genre is incredibly underutilized, and Treasure seemed to be the only company that cared about breathing new life into it.

I may have beaten the first Sonic game; like, a really long time ago.  I can't quite remember, but I used to be able to get a lot farther than I can now.

I never could beat Sonic 3.  I got as far as the Casino Zone and there is always a room you get locked in and I can't figure out how to escape.  Stumped me then, still stumps me now.

Quotelol, who cares.  Its all the same concept with different graphics:  Shoot stuff, dodge stuff, drool. <3
Whenever someone makes a stupid comment like this, I always bring up Treasure.  They've only made three shooters, and not only are they the three best shooters in existence, they're also completely different from each other.  This is what's called talent, having the ideas to move the genre to new places and deliver fresh experiences.

Cave makes the same fucking game over and over.  It's a very good game, don't get me wrong, but it wouldn't kill them to exercise some talent in addition to their skill.
