10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

Got it working, just had to overwrite 1.4.  :D

It's nice to play something other than Keith Courage, even if it is via a flash cart.
#2
Oh, and it only works in 1.4, not 1.5. 1.5 gives me an error.
#3
I'll make sure everything is checked, as it programs the games, says it was a success, then when I click out of the program and start it again to make sure, it says there is 32MB full even though I put 20MB of games on it.
#4
Tried a new null modem cable, and I managed to transfer several games over. However, it still gives me a white screen. Do I need to add something else to the card to get the menu screen?
#5
I thought it was just an option for 378... Guess I'll just leave that blank.
#6
I had it set on IRQ7 and 273. EPP version 1.7.
#7
The only other thing I could do is use uCon64, and I'm not sure how to get it up and running.
#8
One machine is from 1999, running Windows 98 with an integrated Parallel Port. Easily switches to EPP mode via the BIOS. Gives me a 0MB error.

One machine is from 2005, running Windows XP with an integrated Parallel Port. Switches to EPP mode via the BIOS. Gives 0MB error.

Both are eMachines, but the whole "BIOS is limited on an eMachines" thing isn't a problem as I have a plethora of options on both PCs.
#9
Tried it on two PCs, neither work with it...
#10
Any further help? I really want this to work.

Edit: It also doesn't recognize the size of the games on the loader until you try to load them at least once.
#11
Okay, now it says there is 32MB free, but only for a second. "32 MB Free" flashes on screen for a second, then goes straight to "0 MB Free".
#12
Got this in the mail today, need some help. I took it out of the package and immediately put it in my unmodded American TG-16. White screen.

Tried to hook it up to my Windows 98 PC to transfer files. Always says there is 0KB free. I'm powering it, the only thing I can think of is checking the settings...
#13
Okay, why does it say that there's no space? I made it sure it was on the correct mode.
#14
Got the PCE Pro in the mail today. Just checking, I plug the USB in to power it only when I am transferring files?
#15
I guess I'll put the shielding back on...
#16
Any advice? I tried it for a few minutes and noticed that the power thing gets hot in the absence of a heat sink, I don't want it to overheat...
#17
I just took all of the metal casing off my TG-16 to get an idea of what the cart pins looked like in person, is is really necessary to have this casing? I noticed that something related to power seemed to need it, maybe the heat sink? I think I can take the heat sink of the shielding, though.

Buy/Sell/Trade / WTB: PC Engine

Looking for a PC Engine system and a controller, no power supply needed as I have a TG-16 one. I want it to perform a region mod on it.
#19
How exactly do you make a solderless Chopsado? I don't understand the instructions...
#20
And what kind of adapter is needed?
#21
What about the power supply for it? Can I just use a normal TG-16 power supply?
#22
Am I correct in thinking that the base plugs into the expansion port, and there is another port on the base where the CD drive slides in?

Can I take advantage of the AV and save capabilities of the base without a CD add-on? Could I use a Japanese CD drive?
#23
Quick question, I'm looking at this mod:

http://www.multimods.com/SlotMod1.html

Is it really necessary to cut the pins? Can't I just wire it up? As for an 8DPT switch, the "HuCard" pins are the short ones and the "PCB" pins are the long ones, correct?
#24
Where else can you get these connectors, what are they called? Wouldn't a female connector plug into the slot directly?
#25
Is this possible? Taking something that plugs into the back  and modifying it with a switch mod to allow a system to play Japanese games when it is plugged into it? I heard that the expansion port has all of the connectors for the HuCards, but can it go this far?
#26
What kind of PCI slots were used in the original Chapsado? The ones I have don't fit a HuCard.
#27
It'll be fine for what I need.
#28
Probably going to order the PCE Pro some time this weekend. Can't wait to play PC Engine game ROMs on my TG-16!
#29
Okay, I want to evaluate my options before I do anything. I have an American TG-16, unmodded.

I could get a stand alone CD system, but they are expensive, hard to find, and easily broken. If I were to find one for like $20 even if it were broken, would it be worth it?

Obviously there are DUO, DUO-R and DUO-RXs, but I want to see about the normal CD system since it looks cool.
#30
Aaaaand they just sold out. Looks like I might wait a while, or just jump to the Neo.
#31
Got a Windows 98 PC set up with the Dreamwriter program. Now I'm ready to buy the card and cable soon.  :D

But what is the switch pictured here for?:

#32
Just realized that I have a PC with a parallel port in the next room. I'll use that, and I'll be fine.
#33
Getting away from the PCE Pro, are the Japanese CD expansions any better? I've seen one that attaches to the back and one that attaches to the side, would either work in an American system?
#34
The PCE Pro and the Tototek are the same thing.

I just have to install a driver for my flash drive so I can get the required files to my Windows 98 PC with built-in parallel port.
#35
Looks like I'll have to get an old PC out...

At least I can use any USB port to power it, but what sense does that make? If it can power it, it can receive data from it. I think that was one of the points of USB!  ](*,)
#36
Ah, so one like this+ a "switchbox" cable?

http://www.amazon.com/Parallel-IEEE-Female-Converter-Cable/dp/B0034XB7E8/ref=sr_1_38?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1270515795&sr=1-38

Both are on Amazon, and both are cheap. Almost time to purchase the card...  :P
#37
Okay, so could I use a cable with a USB connector on one end and a DB-25 male connector on the other end? The cable is actually a male DB-9 to USB with a male DB-9 to male DB-25 converter on the end. Would this work? Dreamwriter has an option to use 2F8, which equates to COM2, which is what my cable is recognized as.

Would this work?
#38
Aware.  :D

I'll get to you on that TurboBooster soon.
#39
I don't exactly have a very deep wallet, so I figured it be good for me.  :-k
#40
Never mind, figured both out. I'm guessing I can use the "US Region" box to make all games, including Japanese ones, run as normal on an American system?

Oh, and 1.5 gives me an error that says "NT Port Driver could not start. Something wrong!!!!", but 1.4 doesn't. Anyone have any experience with getting one of these things to run that can shed some light on the subject in general?
#41
More questions:

1. It says to install Dreamwriter 1.4 and then update to 1.5. How exactly am I supposed to do this?

2. I can get a list of games, the American games are the only ones where it says how big they are. The Japanese games just show up as 0k.
#42
After looking around a bit, I found out that the adapter I'm using thinks that I have a serial port, would it still work? It could connect physically to the card. Oh, and about the USB, does it need to be plugged in to a computer for it to function or is it like a charger?
#43
Well, I'm getting a TurboBooster pretty soon. Then I will get the PCE Pro, I think I have the cables necessary already. I have a serial to USB cable plus a DB-9 male to DB-25 male converter.

Those who have the PCE Pro, are you satisfied with your purchase?

Of course, it won't hurt to get some common US games even after I get the PCE Pro.
#44
Yeah, this is the place where I got that information:

http://blog.thewombat.org/2009/12/tototek-pce-pro-32m-pc-engine.html

Thanks for setting the record straight. I'll order it soon, and get a booster. I will have to get a switchbox cable and a gender changer along with that USB cable, though.
#45
I got my TG-16 from the guy right next to him, and got an Intellivision II from him. I guess I either didn't see those games, or I missed them.

I got some good non-Turbo related stuff, though. But a $35 TG-16 would have been hard to find around here.
#46
I was there, that's where I got my TG-16. I think the guy selling the Turbo stuff had some good deals, but I don't know if I misheard him or not, but he wanted $4000 for that CIB LT.  :-"
#47
Good. I saw a review that said it didn't, but I guess I know now.
#48
I'm talking about putting a Japanese game like Kato-chan and Ken-chan on the device, putting it in my American TG-16, and playing it with no further modifications. Would that work?
#49
PM Sent.

Any ideas on the Tototek cart?
#50
Got it for $35 with RF, one controller, and Keith Courage. I'm looking to add a TurboBooster to it, and maybe get a Tototek flash cart. Can the latter play Japanese games as well as American ones? Does it need to be constantly plugged into a USB port? Anyone buy one?

Not much in the way of TG-16 stuff around here, and eBay auctions of more than one TG-16 game is pretty rare.
