Only 4:3 screens.
I had a 100hz panasonic but i found it had a very unnatural picture with games.
Edges in your typical psone game (or other early 3D games) were very highlighted and resulted looking ugly overall.
I also had issues with RGB scart, there were horizontal lines one the screen which i didn't have with other TV's in RGB.
What about samsung, lg, toshiba, sony,... ??
From my experience i had issues with expensive TV's.
Go to cheap with some unknown brands and i found issues to when i switched to rgb, the image softened when it supposed to be better.

I played this game when final fight was just released but the game seemed a bit older.
The game was western style and at the first level (or one of the first levels) you were on a horse trying to catch up a train.
Once on the roof of the train you had to jump wagons killing bad guys in the process.
I think there was also hand to hand combat involved on the train.
Didn't get much further then that i'm afraid.
Any suggestions what this game is called??

I know Sunset Riders, to be sure i watched a video of the early missions on youtube.
It's not that game.
I think the game i played at the time might be a bit older (at least graphical wise) and is a bit slower paced.
The first mission is about catching up with a train on a horse, getting on the train on the roof and then waste of the bad guys one by one.

Hi there, i think it's been a year ago or something since i posted here.
Had been busy moving, working, wife is pregnant... 
I just seen the video.
One of the consoles i have the best memories of, it was my first true love.
I recently finished spellcaster, wonder boy in monsterland, played choplifter (cheated to finish that) and golvellius (is on hold).
I think i didn't see "Quartet" in the movie, maybe a little bit forgotten but very good game!

Why?

Well, it is easy getting to play all my games in just 1 center (which is in my case xbox).
The games are running through component 720P which gives a better image.
And i don't make a mess hooking all my consoles up time and time again.
Not saying i would never again hook up my turbo again though.

And if your gonna say to just download them... the cd-rom based games are not as straightforward to run them on an emulator as with the hucard based ones.
First you got to have a torrent that still works with all the games that you want.
And second, the cd-rom based roms need to be converted from mp3 to wav and the cue needs to be rewritten.
A hell of a lot of work if you ask me.

In my search for PC engine/turbo cd rom based roms i came across this site.

The pc engine collection comes on 2 DVD's (which is more space then you need for hucard roms) which got me thinking it might have the cd rom based games.
Not very clear from the text on the site it does, but i mailed the seller a few days back if it they were also cd-rom based games on it.
I also asked  if the cd-rom based roms work straight from the disc or if it just contained the raw files that need converting.
Still no reply from the seller.

I bought this on ebay UK and is a great collection of hu-card based roms which i'm playing on my emulator on xbox.

But this collection is only hucard based and contains no cd-rom based games.

Thunder Force 3 is probably my favorite to play, even though it is extremely easy for me.  I like Thunder Force 4 a lot, but it does get a bit fatiguing.  So does Thunder Force 5, which was less fun than part 4.  It just tried to be too "hardcore".  I really, really enjoy Thunder Force 2.  It had the perfect difficulty level.  And yes, I enjoy the overhead stages.

I don't know of any similar lists for the PCE or SNES.

Thunder Force 3 happens to be one of my favorites to... and thruxton...
Propably also a lot to do with the fond memories i had on them.
I'm glad i made lots of good choices when i bought games as a kid as otherwise i might say different.

Anyways, i only just discovered (a week ago) thunder force 3 was released on the snes named "thunder spirits".
Not sure it was called that way in all regions though.
Played it on my snes emulator.
It's not exactly a straight port from the genesis version, it is more difficult from my experience.
Backgrounds are a bit different and maybe more detailed but it seems as a result end bosses seem to stand out a bit less, but that's maybe something to do with the fact that the first boss is yellow instead of red.
The music is a bit smoother but doesn't come true to be as emotional as the genesis version to.
Haven't put that much playtime in the snes version but it seems i still prefer the genesis version.

Anyone played Last Hope? Looks like a horizontal shooter. I saw some screenshots that looked bad-fucking-ass. But I'd like to know if the game itself is any good before I shell out $40 on it.

I'm familiar with 95% of the Dreamcast games, at a time i was digging deep in eveything DC.

For shooters i reccommend the following titles based on my experience, friends advice and media.
Some of them might be expensive.

Under defeat (just made it on my list)

Last hope is good to but might not be with the very best for some.

I recently played a not to popular but great horizontal shooter on the msx2 called "space manbow".
It's a shooter from konami and looks very good to for an msx game.
msx might not be the ultimate system for shooters but still worthwhile looking into.

A bullet rain shooter like on the dreamcast can be fun but can feel in my opinion a bit soulless sometimes i guess.
I like the feeling like you can avoid any attack when your good in a game.
So, maybe we can count dreamcast or saturn out as the definitive shooter platform??
These 2 types of shmups are not really comparable eh?

I think the fight is between genesis and PCE in my opinion.

Here and there i heard and read the pc engine is mostly known for it's good shoot' em ups.
From my experience it certainly felt that way, but what do you think?

The genesis has also a lot of wonderfull shmups like thruxton, the thunder force series,...

The saturn has radiant silvergun which is one of the most loved and lots of others.

In it's late years the Dreamcast still keeps pumping out shmups now and then, trigger heart excelica, ikagura, zerogunner 2, castle shikigami, borderdown,...

It just happened that i confirmed that i have searched for the roms after my first message (in which i told i was gonna try a rom) and replied to that so Keranu would know (if he read it) i allready gave it a try and send me a PM if he wanted to look into this further.
Getting the quotes (previous posts together) makes you not unnecessarily reading the other posts which could confuse you into "what post is aimed at who and is about what"

I intentional didn't quote your post now but i guess you'll know it is aimed at you.

The dreamcast is at least in my top 3 favorite consoles.
At the time it came out it introduced me to the internet and online gaming and a sense of community through dreamarena (which is now no more sadly).
It was to innovative for it's time!
It has many good games allthough some were were later released on the PS2.
I advise you have a good search in it's library of games.
You'll be pleasantly surprised how many forgotton/underrated gems it has.

But the loading thing Will likely get on your nerves (if you can't get them to load from a harddrive that is).
And if mame doesn't set you on fire i  think your better of getting a supergun or arcade cabinet instead.

I believe there are saturn, neo geo, snes controllers, street fighter controllers,... for the PS2.
So, they must be available for xbox to right?
Tried searching ebay for the keyword "saturn xbox" and "neo geo xbox" but no results with that.
Does anyone know or recommend a retro controller that is made to function with xbox and uses all of it's xbox buttons?

That's how i see it.
Allthough the more arcade kind of blasts seem to be lesser present then now.
Propably because of the high prices of games most seek something that lasts +10 hours to be finished.
But xbox live and downloadable content seem to fit that bill perfectly.
I also don't seem to be intrested in paying a full price in let's say a (new) Castlevania game for the GBA or DS if for example i have castlevania 4 for the snes in my collection.
However, the evolution in videogames i see is good, it slowly seems to mature like movies and music.
This opens genres!

At the time the Sega CD came out i was more intrested in music and going out and when i played road avenger and an other type of this sort of game it made me turn my back on gaming for a a few years until the PS1 came out.
That was the only time i was not into gaming anymore though.
Now i know there are a few good games on it and many collectors see the mega CD in a worthwhile investment.
But it's certainly not the worst console, the Philips CD-I maybe???

Finally got it today and did some playtesting.
Good and sharp image, sound and button feel is good to.
Allthough you can immediately see some burn in from images that don't move within 5 seconds.
Especially life bars in certain games that are there as long as you play the game can still be seen in backgrounds for a very long time.
Most noticeable in darker areas of a game (like the opening of R-Type for example) and when you don't look straight to the screen.
But it doesn't disturb me in a way i don't enjoy playing games on an LT or regret buying it.
As long these burn ins are temporally and nothing permanent it's a fine machine!

Yeah Mednafen is a way better emulator, I had nothing but trouble with Hugo.  The only problem I have will it is that sometimes the synching on the audio is off, like in Ys IV for example, any redbook audio during cutscenes is a few seconds behind the action on screen.  This is even using real Turbo CDs in my Xbox, so I know it's not a problem with disc images.  It's a minor complaint though, mednafen is awesome otherwise and the perfect way to play Xak III and Ys IV if your duo won't read CDRs.

In some ways (definitely not all ways) running an emulator on xbox is indeed awesome.
How can you run the original nec hardware on a plasma through component leads in 720p???
With xbox you can!!!
It is still sharp on a BIG screen!
Plus, it is easy to play your games on xbox and keep your console/collection clean and safe and don't create a mess hooking it all up!
Never understood the fuss of emulating on a desktop PC but on a console it is so much better!

Yess!!

Got mednafenX running on my xbox mediacenter and with the dracula x game the otherwise missing sounds on the HugoX are present now!

The only issue i have now, is that i have some back ups on a dvd-r but to get them running i have to convert them from mp3 to wav in some way.
It's taken some time but i finally begin to understand the basics in doing this.

Try Mednafen PCE instead, I have way better luck with that emulator than Hugo on the Xbox.

Kitsunexus, this is one of the many sounds that is missing.
Like at the beginning of the level when he is riding the horses and yells "yah yah" is also one of the sounds that are missing.

Played my original dracula x CD on my xbox through the hugoX emulator but some sounds are missing when i play it on the original hardware.
Like when you defeat your first boss (the dragon) he screams which you don't hear on the xbox.
Don't know if it will be the same issue when playing it through romfile though.

Have no turbografx roms yet on my xbox but so far i'm very impressed with mame, genesis, snes and so on but with an old fashioned controller the experience would be even better.
I didn't need a chip and i also didn't have the time to realize what i have now on my xbox.
I just stumbled on someone who sold his xbox and seem to have the knowledge and within a few days time he was fitting me a 320GB hard drive in it and installed a complete mediacenter with all the possibilities you could wish for.
It almost IS a PC!

On genesis the sound is harsh and snes noticeable slowdown.
Nes was more then ok.
Can't stand the hassle on PC (while seeing a mate of mine struggling on it's PC and getting his controller setup), it gives me a headache and it's just not the same on a PC while you can sit on your sofa on the big screen.
But i'm a busy bee and it happens that at the moment i'm looking out for xbox emulation.
Will get software installed by someone but i bet it will be sometime before i can relax and start playing the things i want to play.
Spending to much time finding and searching things out and less playing.
When does it gonna stop!

Just got mediacenter with emu's and also hugoX on my xbox but no roms for it.
Seems it is relatively easy to find back ups on hucards but not CD from my experience.
I'm searching for Beyond shadowgate in particular.
C'mon show me roms are better then the virtual console thing.

Last week i got It came from the desert.
Played it 45 minutes, crappy fmv and the action is like different mini games.
But i definitely can't call it a bad game, it has charm and keeps you somewhat wondering what will be next.
It was worth the 45$ but only just.

Ys I & II also received but I'll play this one if i have a bit more time on my hands, like all RPG's.

Might be true in some extent...
But that what makes it somewhat intresting, (in the case you allready own all the greatest consoles) to find the underrated or forgotten titles, the search for a gem and that wouldn't ask for hard cash in most cases.

Still not an owner of a Wii but since i wanted to buy Gunstar Heroes and R-Type III on ebay and lost the auction i don't seem to care that much as they are on the Wii!!!
At least on the European list.
Not the same as having the original but as some titles even plays a bit better as the the original version (definitely better then the pal version with a weak signal from console to TV) it saves me money for something else.

Also some of the arcade compilations out there like midway,taito,... i have now on ps2 made me sell my original games like gauntlet on the nes, mortal kombat 2 on genesis,... because they are better on the compilations (not all are better though).
Still, some games like Ghouls n' Ghosts on the genesis... I just can't bring myself to sell them even i though i have them on the capcom generations compilation.
Must be because they were significant in gaming history and bring the most nostalgia from the early days.

It depends.
Definitely not the CDi for me.
The Zelda games are very mediocre on this.
The CDi might only be worthwhile if you like some sub standard myst type of game.
I guess it had 11th hour or 7th guest released on it??
Chaos control is a light cursor shooter on it but i have it on saturn but it isn't worth buying the console for in my book.

On the jaguar tempest 2000 is a must have! (that's if you like games like Rez and amplitude).
It's some sort of hypnotic music shooter and reminds me a bit of space invaders.
Alien vs predator was very hyped on it at the time and is OK ish.
Iron soldier isn't to bad as a 3D mech game but cybermorph is very primitive and was laughable last time i played it.
It has a good version of Wolfenstein to!

The 3DO might be the best overall choice as it has crash n' burn, alone in the dark (which is for some almost unplayable but has very deep puzzles),a near identical version as the arcade Samurai shodown,the first need for speed (which was and still is great but might be a bit better on psone), road rash (also on psone), return fire, total eclipse... and some good (slow paced) adventures like Dragon Lore and Lost Eden which had great graphics for it's time.
But it doesn't really have a title that really stands out in my opinion.

With the CD32 the alien breed series springs to my mind and isn't bad (there's also a 3D version of this game which is very primitive now) but most of the better games were also released for the amiga 500, but of course it's easier to load it on a CD32.

The 7800 has a lot of updated and better versions of the 2600 games and that's really all i know of it.

Feels great sometimes sharing my knowledge and passion.

Are there any particular games you like or want to get hold of on the various systems?
I'm always open to learn more.

another solution rather than drop mad dimes on a converter or an entire extra game library is to grab one of those flash carts.  You can load like 20 games on it and select them from a menu.  I haven't heard much about them, but I'm thinking they work on jap and us systems.
