12/23/2024: Localization News - Team Innocent

PC-FX Localization for Team Innocent is released, a pre-Christmas gift!! In a twist, it feels like the NEC PC-FX got more attention in 2024 than any other time I can remember! Caveat: The localizers consider the "v0.9" patch a BETA as it still faces technical hurdles to eventually subtitle the FMV scenes, but they consider it very much playable.

PC Engine LT worries

I'm intrested in a PC engine LT to become the pride of my collection but also for a lot of use.
I read that some sellers of a frequently used LT have 1 or more dead pixels.
Are they vulnerable in that way or in other ways to have permanent damage?
Can a dead pixels become very irritating?
How do they exist?
And are they reversable?
Or do i overestimate the problem?

nat

They are not reversible, they are the nature of early 90's technology, they are not irritating unless you are an OCD freak.

You definitely overestimate the problem, IMHO, unless you happen to get one with a bunch of dead pixels. If I got an LT and it had but one dead pixel I'd be the happiest guy on Earth.

Nazi NecroPhile

Nat speaks true - dead / stuck pixels are the nature of early lcd screens.  Stuck pixels on newer lcds can sometimes be 'fixed' with gentle massages and quickly cycling colors on screen, but I doubt that this would help with such ancient technology.

Normally i wouldn't buy one but i am about to go working in the nightshift at my work and will earn 25% more money then i do now.
Seems like a good excuse to celebrate it that way... and my wife is the best to

The screen is 4" right??
Where i live we measure in centimeters, an inch is about 2,5 cm if i'm correct which makes the screen 10cm.
I thought it would be bigger judging from the pics of an LT. :-k

not just the early 90's if we looking to some other products recently released by a handheld manufacturer named sony, where the dead pixel coming already as a factory setting.

@RCduck:

Can a dead pixels become very irritating? > it' depends in which color the dead pix turns for permanently. when the pix is white and the background black (or other dark colors), then it could be quite irritating or disturbing in terms of a proper working collectors item. but not big impact on the gameplay etc. as long there not tousends of pix-graves on screen.
And are they reversable? > no
Or do i overestimate the problem? > it depends on the person itself. if you spend $700 for a collector item, it may really could hurt you every time you get confronted with this, more to say cosmetically problem.

Seriously, I had bought a psp in september and it came with 3 dead pixels in a diagonal line across the screen. I took it back of course, Walmart was happy to give me a replacement. Other stores aren't so nice, like gamecrazy. If you buy a psp with dead pixels there, you can't get it exchanged. They make you send it in to sony or something like that.

I'm excited now i made up my mind getting an LT but with all the excitement i forgot a few drawbacks which could limit my selection of games i can play on the system.
Almost half of my collection contains turbo games (mainly platform games like bong and legendary axe).
Also Devil Crush is the turbo version which i see as a very nice game to be played on an LT.
I checked the NEC console guide and it seems only turbo systems have adapters to play pc engine games and not the other way around. ](*,)
Can't i really get hold of an adapter to make turbo games work on it?
Or is a mod needed?

You can't get an adapter that will work. A mod must be performed. Sure, the mod is fairly simple, but you still need an adapter after performing that mod.

As Sedane said, it's possible to make the converter work.  You have to life one pin from one of the chips off the circuit and connect it to a ground point.  Relatively simple if you ever soldered before.  Instructions here.

After doing the above mod, you can:
1. Use a region converter (the same one you'd use on the TG16 to play PCE games)
2. Install a switch to connect between two regions - instructions here.
3. Or permanently switch the region so that your LT will only play US games.

I made a fold-up bong out of an LT once. I turned the RUN button into a carb.

you worry about your LT? modding a LT is like throwing it out of the window. i rather suggest to rebuy all those games as a japanese version.

just out of curiosity, what's the battery life like on the LT? Better, the same, or worse than the gt/express?

I can't imagine it would be any better.

I don't think LTs run on batteries, they just have an AC adapter. From what I know, they did release some rare battery charger for it though. There was also some guy who made a homemade battery pack for it that took like 8 AA batteries!

yes. of course there isn't any space left for use any batteries on that beast. here was my former solution with a 2x12V/5.4Ah acid-lead accu bank and step-down regulator, which even could supply a LT-CDrom combo for hours :)

Thanks,

When i have an LT i will propably do the first mod with the hucard converter combo.
Not to shabby for the 2nd mod as it ain't a cheap system!

Anyone have a converter for sale??

Someone i  know has a few connection that might sell me an LT, otherwise it would be an ebay i guess.

PS: I meant Bonk, not Bong guys.
But i'm sure you know what i meant. :)

Also bought R-Type and Spriggan from the same seller.

Looks pretty good even without the box.  Boxes are mostly important to 'collectors' anyway, and they're more interested in saying that they have (insert name here) than they are actually playing it.  I wonder - was that 6 button Genny controller in the picture hacked to work on the LT?

I bought a boxed, mint, sexy, complete, LT for $350 9 years ago only to have it stolen.

I had the LT/Neck adapter/Super CD-Rom/AC Pro set up.  God that was gorgeous.  Now I can't stand up for a couple minutes...

Hello, I'm sorry to inform the PC Engine will have a delay because 4 orders were send 1 week later, it was our fault and we apologize for all the inconveniences this may cause to you. The LT was sent and will arrive to you for sure. It was sent with tracking number. That delay will not happen again. Thanks. Mundocombo.

Finally got it today and did some playtesting. :)
Good and sharp image, sound and button feel is good to.
Allthough you can immediately see some burn in from images that don't move within 5 seconds.
Especially life bars in certain games that are there as long as you play the game can still be seen in backgrounds for a very long time.
Most noticeable in darker areas of a game (like the opening of R-Type for example) and when you don't look straight to the screen.
But it doesn't disturb me in a way i don't enjoy playing games on an LT or regret buying it.
As long these burn ins are temporally and nothing permanent it's a fine machine!

So it sounds like the LT screen is exactly the same as a TurboExpress screen, just a bit larger.

offsidewing

The LT screen is identical to the PCE Duo Monitor, just a little more expensive!

guyjin

So wait. Lemme get this straight.

The LT does not have batteries. The LT cannot play CD games without an add-on. The LT has a rather awkward looking controller. And it is more expensive than a duo.

So really, it makes no sense to buy an LT; just get a car adaptor and monitor for your duo and take that instead.

Keranu

An LT is much more compact than a Duo with a monitor attached :D . Also, the LT has a built in antenna for watching TV and has a controller port if you wish to use a controller.

An antenna for a television standard that (will/is supposed to be) gone by 2009, and it won't fit in my pocket.

I'm gonna start looking for a duo monitor now.

Keranu

Terestrial television kicks ass!

By the way, I think you could fit an LT in your pocket if your pockets are loose enough. I haven't held a LT personally, but it seems to be the same size as a PCE which I have fit into my pocket before.

So really, it makes no sense to buy an LT; just get a car adaptor and monitor for your duo and take that instead.
The LT is the coolest piece of video game hardware, ever.  (note, I didn't say best, just coolest).  It's the same footprint as a PCE, serves all the same functions and hooks onto all the same attachements as a PCE, and has a built-in, fold down, generously sized LCD screen with a TV antenna.  It has a normal controller port, but the full fuctions of a PCE controller are built into the system.  You can hook this thing up to a CD interface/super CD unit and play the games on the LT's screen.

Now, the one drawback was you needed on AC adapter for the LT and another for the CD unit.  I know they made a battery pack for the duo and a car adapter.  Two things I don't know:

1.  If the Duo battery can be used on a LT/CD system.
2.  If they made a car adapter for the CD-rom units. (they did for the LT) Or, can the DUO car adapter be used on the CD Interface or SCD unit.
