@GTV reviews the Cosmic Fantasy 1-2 Switch collection by Edia, provides examples of the poor English editing/localization work. It's much worse for CF1. Rated "D" for disappointment, finding that TurboGrafx CF2 is better & while CF1's the real draw, Edia screwed it up...

An update on this. I had to pay another competant modder to fix this problem for me. So my console is now working fine but I had to shell out more money.

Rachael Seleski / retroaccessories / pcenginesales is a total deadbeat and all I can do is recommend that others steer well clear of her on forums and ebay. She doesn't know what she's doing and certainly won't respond if anything goes wrong.

Edit: as suggested above I will ask if a mod will consider stickying this thread or adding her name to a bad traders list. I won't bump this thread again.
#4
Thanks for your reply soop. I've had an offer to look into it from a guy who's done mods for me in the past so I won't need you look at it. Thanks alot anyways!

I can't believe you found a video by the very hack who did this terrible work. It's a small world.
#5
Thanks for the support and advice guys.

Quote from: soop on 05/08/2012, 05:21 AMHow are you with a soldering iron?  Crack that badboy open and take some photos.

If you're really stuck, I could take a look at it for you (I'm in the UK), though I'm nowhere near the skill level of the well known guys on this board.  But I know the inside of a Core Grafx pretty well, and I've performed a few mods in my time.
I'm lousy with a soldering iron and I think the modding inside my core grafx is fairly extensive and cramped so it would be far beyond my skills. I tried opening it before I sent it for repair and found that the top shell was attached with a large cable and was pretty tight. I didn't investigate further for fear of breaking something. Is there an easy way to dismantle it properly? I've looked for videos but found nothing yet. I will consider your kind offer, thanks!

I have never dealt with her on this forum but after checking it does appear that the member pcenginesales is the same person. While I'm sure there are plenty of skilled modders here I'm reluctant to ship this console out again as I'm in the UK.

Maybe her cables are ok but her console work / modding is diabolical. She is also extremely slow to reply to emails and frequently doesn't reply unless you sent multiples messages. Can you imagine sending a console half way round the world to the original seller only for them to "repair" it and send it back with worse problems than it left with? I even got an email from her saying that it was fixed and everything is perfect before she mailed it. Her level of incompetence is unbelievable.

I bought a modded Core Grafx 2 (RGB and region modded) from Rachel Seleski who runs the above ebay shop and website. It cost around £85 / $137. I have had nothing but problems with her work and she is awful to deal with.

Shortly after I got the console, the AV socket started to malfunction. The AV lead needed to be moved around in the socket and held in place to keep the picture and sound working properly. It steadily got worse until it stopped working completely.

To cut a long story short, after weeks / months of emailing her about the problem she agreed to repair the console if I shipped it to her. Many weeks after I shipped it I eventually got it back last week. The first problem I noticed was that hu-cards now don't sit flush in the slot and stick up at an angle. To my relief it seemed that it worked fine but does look a bit wrong. However it now only runs Japanese games, US games won't work at all when the region switch is thrown.

In repairing the console she has somehow managed to botch the job, making a mess of the card slot and breaking the region switch completely. She must not have even tested it after the repair or she would have realised what she had done.

I am extremely angry about this whole situation and find her utterly incompetent, unprofessional and a nightmare to deal with. She often takes weeks to reply to an email and there are constant delays at every step, always with lousy excuses about why she doesn't reply sooner.

I find it hard to believe that she manages to run a website and ebay shop when she is this incompetent.

Half of my games are now unplayable and the unit just looks wrong with the cards sticking up in the slot. I asked her for a refund, surprise surprise no reply.

I am putting this up as a warning to others about her work and how she treats customers. I can post her full details if necessary.

(apologies if this is the wrong section to post this - please move if necessary)

I've been looking for a cheap card only Down Load for ages but can only find complete ones. The same goes for Soldier Blade.
#9
I find Download much harder than the average side scroller. I've tried it a few times and never got past the second level.
#10
I don't see why some people call them turbochips, the few US cards I have all say hucard on the back, not turbochip.
#11
I tried via AV2 scart and it runs ok. The picture will still switch between 4:3 - 16:9 / stereo - mono if the cable is moved in the core grafx's socket but it easier to get it in the right position. Obviously the isn't the same problem with switching the RGB signal on and off. I hate composite though so I still want the RGB fixed.

So I opened it up. It's a rats nest of wires in there due to the region switch and RGB mods. It was hard to get a good look as the top is connected to the bottom by a stiff ribbon cable that I don't want to mess with. However it appears that the AV socket is a bit loose and the GREEN wire connecting to it has a lot of play in it. I'm guessing this is the fault rather than the cable?

I have soldered a couple of times but I'm rubbish at it and this Core Grafx cost me quite a lot. I'm not sure what to do now. I always noticed that the AV socket was very stiff and I guess plugging it in and out cracked the solder joints. I wish I'd gone for the PS1 AV socket mod as DIN sockets are shit imo.

The modder who did this for me is a deadbeat and I think I'm gonna name and shame her in a different thread.

Thanks for your help so far guys.

Quote from: soop on 02/08/2012, 08:16 AMHmmm... I was kind of getting that from a Megadrive SCART cable I just got.  I TBH, I spent so long messing around with it, I've forgotten what the cause was, but a final wiggle switched it from an AV display to an RGB one.  At other times, I was getting sound and picture interference.

Try it in the other (non RGB) SCART slot if you have one and see how it deals with composite.  I'm tempted to say it's the cable, but without any kind of redundant swap it's going to be hard to tell.
Unfortunately the RGB socket replaced the original AV socket so I can't test it that way. I really hoping that it's the cable that's broken becauase the original modder isn't going to fix the socket if that's the problem.
#13
My Core Grafx 2 (RGB and region modded) has started malfunctioning. The RGB cable needs to be wiggled around in the core grafx din socket to get it working properly. When moving the cable around in the socket, the picture changes between widescreen - 4:3, standard - colour boosted and between mono and stereo.

At first this was workable but now I can't get it working right no matter how much I move the cable around. The modder of the console is a deadbeat and won't reply or help me out. I'm trying to figure out if it's the cable or the socket that's broken. I was told that a Megadrive RGB cable is identical but I don't have another cable to test it with.

At the moment I'm using an external "RGB box" instead that plugs into the expansion port as a work around but it's only a temporary measure as I can no longer hook it up to my briefcase setup.

Any advice would be much appreciated.
#14
Quote from: thesteve on 09/02/2011, 09:21 PMpossible prob with the card detect pin?
does your briefcase need a system card to run?
It plays all of my other cards fine and it doesn't need a system card to run.
#15
Does anyone have any idea why my dodgy copy of Dungeon Explorer glitches and crashes in my breifcase setup but works fine when the core grafx is detached.

It's not a problem, just a mystery.
#16
I've now got another US copy of dungeon explorer, thanks to Necromancer. It works perfectly on my region modded core grafx 2 + briefcase, so the problem was definately with the other glitched card, not the console. After this I gave the glitched card another try and it still glitches / crashes. However I then tried the glitched card in the coregrafx 2 without the briefcase setup and it works fine. I'd never thought of trying the card out on the just the core grafx (without the cd rom connected).

It seems very strange that a card will work fine on th core grafx but will be a glitchy mess when used in the briefcase setup.   :-s

Anyway, finally I get to play this lovely game.

Thanks for the info, the hori pad is now sold.

Hori joypad added.

The system card 3 was Japanese and I sent it back to the guy who traded it with me. He confirmed it was definately broken beyond use despite looking perfect. I've got a replacement now.
#22
Quote from: nat on 07/14/2011, 09:44 PMIndeed, I've seen region mods do this exact sort of thing, especially if there is a poor connection on one of the data lines. As a matter of fact, I missed any mention earlier in the thread that this system had a region mod on it.

The region mod would've been my #1 suggestion to check had I realized you were working with a system that had a region mod.

Still, the best thing you could do at this point is try the cart in a different, non region-modded system and see what happens. You might be surprised at the results.
I forgot to mention the region mod, sorry. Unfortunately I don't have access to another console to test the game on. The only other US game I have is splatterhouse and that plays perfectly. Dead hu cards may be rare but in my short time with the system I've already had another broken card, it was a system card 3 that definately was dead.
#23
Quote from: nat on 07/13/2011, 08:13 PMWatch the next copy do the exact same thing...
Are you saying that my core grafx 2 is at fault even though it plays all my other games perfectly? If so, is there a guide anywhere to cleaning the slot? Is there any chance the region mod could be the problem?

I bought one that turned out to be broken so I now want a replacement.

I'm looking for a cheap US hu card only copy. Will buy or offer trades. I've got some spare pc engine and Megadrive stuff. I'll stick up a trade list up later.

Thanks.
#26
Thanks for the further advice but I'm now certain that this card is dead. I tried the putting electrical tape behind the pins to make a tighter fit but it made no difference. As I said the game will always start fine and will usually let me play for a bit but sooner or later it crashes. Sometimes in very interesting ways:

/100_0847.jpg

This might just be the fabled 6 player split screen beta edition. Will trade it for a regular version + cash if anyone's interested?

The music glitches are really weird to and it starts playing random music tracks or beeps on top of each other. It crashes 100% of the time on the password select screen. I don't think it can be my cart slot pins on my core crafx as I've got 20 odd other games which all work perfectly.

I'm giving up on this one and I'll stick up a wanted ad for a loose US Dungeon explorer.
#27
I tried again with this game but I think it's officially dead. It always starts fine but then craps out at some point during gameplay. Oddly if I select enter password it will always crash. I have cleaned it thoroughly and tried barely inserting it but to no avail.

I'm now on the lookout for a cheap card only US copy as I've heard nothing but good things about this enticing game. Is the text in the Japanese version a significant obstacle? I hate using guides.....

Thanks for the suggestions.

Check out this disaster. It let me play for 20 mins ok then crashed. Now it just does this.

I bought this off ebay months ago and never tested it beyond the title screen.  :-({|=

I've cleaned the contacts thoroughly with an eraser and then alcohol but it doesn't help.

This sucks, I could of just bought the dirt cheap Japanese version but paid more the the US one to get English text.

Sorry for the lack of details, I'll try to take some photos of what I've got and screen shots later on.

I love the series, I think it's the music that keeps me enthralled. I don't think part 3 is bad at all. It's very playable and the intro is so brilliant it might be even better than part 2's.
#33
I bought a region and RGB modded Core Grafx 2. It outputs RGB through a replacement din socket.

I thought the picture was perfect. I also have an external custom made RGB unit that plugs into the expansion slot. When I tested it I found that the picture is different, probably better. The larger sprites are noticeably less blocky / jaggy. The sound however is worse through the external unit.

Any ideas on why there is a variance in picture quality?

Thanks.

Quote from: soop on 05/20/2011, 07:25 AMExcellent, thanks for that.  Do you have a link?  I just bought an IFU the other day, and I'm waiting for it to arrive
Sure thing: http://www.maplin.co.uk/ac-dc-multi-voltage-2500ma-switched-mode-power-supply-49063

It's actually 2.5A max and on sale at the moment so not too expensive. Same price in store.
#35
Third time lucky, I finally sorted out a working power supply for the IFU-30.

So for anyone else in the UK / Europe needs one what I'd recommend is a higher ampage multi voltage PSU. I went with a maplin 2.25A max switchable PSU and it works a charm.

A 1.5A switchable PSU will not work despite the unit only needing 1.45A. Most if not all switchable PSUs cannot supply the max rated ampage at the higher voltages so always choose a higher rated model than you need.
#36
Quote from: soop on 05/18/2011, 07:19 AMI'm guessing it could be to do with the voltage :/  apparantly the 9v rating is the guaranteed minimum, so it could be that the old PSU was delivering more voltage, and this new one is delivering exactly 9v?

Was the first PSU the actual original version?
The new one is rated at exactly 9V 1.5A and isn't changeable.

The old one isn't original. It's a HP brand 9V 2A model. It's 110V and it worked fine in short bursts but it kept overheating, probably due to the cheap stepdown I was using.
#37
I sent the radioshack psu back and bought a generic 9v 1.5A PSU instead.

The problems continue though. I cut the jack of the new psu and attached the correct jack from the 110v psu that came with the system. I attached it by striping the wires, twisting them together and electrical taping them.

It all works fine but the picture has some light artifacting / snow effect running through it. I presuming it's interferance. Could it be due to the way I connected the wires? I hope it's not another dodgy PSU.

This is turning into a massive pain in the ass. ;-(
#38
I bought a multivoltage 1.5A from Radioshack and while it fit the socket and powered my IFU-30 (1450ma) on it couldn't spin the disc fast enough to load. I had to sent it back. I've heard these multi PSUs can't provide full ampage at the higher voltages.

I'm now waiting on a generic 9V 1.5A psu and I'm planning to just cut the jack off it and re-attach the one from my 110 psu.

Here's hoping it works this time.

Quote from: guest on 05/17/2011, 03:22 PMI loved Super Darius, which was my first CD game. I rented the SNES Darius games but didn't like them. Super Darius is very difficult as it is a faithful port of the 3 screen arcade... Only you're now stuck in a single screen.

Suoer Darius II is based on the arcade, but has been reworked to play well on a single screen and has lots of new enemies with original graphics which look nicer than the arcade. The game is a cool tech demo for the PCE and really fun.

I'd recommend Super Darius II first, then Darius II/Sagaia for MD, then Super Darius, Darius Plus, Sagaia SMS... then Super Nova and lastly Darius Twin.

Darius Alpha is only a boss rush mode of Darius Plus. I haven't bothered to play it far enough to see if it includes the new bossrs added to Super Darius. Even if that would interest you, you'recstill better off playing Super Darius' boss rush mode which definitely contaibs all of it's bosses plus CD surround sound music.
Surely the Saturn version of Darius 2 is superior to the MD one?

I got one of them with a bunch of games and find it very uncomfortable to use. Its corners dig into my hands and give them blisters in no time.
#42
Thanks fellas.

I'm not playing the roms however I finally got the legendary axe 2 level select working. Starting from the begining I managed to get up the the last stage but it's kicking my ass.

Legendary Axe 1 on the other hand is still killing me. I keep wasting all my lives on the stupidly strict jumping sections. Does anyone know if the supposed code for extra continues works? I've not got it to work.

"At the Game Over screen, set I on turbo and hold down I and Select while pressing Left multiple times."
#43
I'm stuck on both of these and can't see myself getting any further without level select or continues cheats.

I found codes on gamefaqs but they won't work of my Japanese versions so I'm presuming they're for US versions only.

Are there cheats for the Japanese versions of Legendary Axe 1 & 2?

Thanks.

Well I got this one: http://www.radioshackuk.co.uk/epages/BT2533.sf/sec77b4820ea4/?ObjectPath=/Shops/BT2533/Products/661-0403

The conntector fits fine and it will boot the ifu 30 but when I press run to load the disc it just spins but doesn't load.

I'm fairly certain that means it's not getting enough ampage. What a pain in the ass. The system works perfectly with a 110v PSU and stepdown so that's not the problem.

I've heard these multi PSUs sometimes wont provide max ampage at higher voltages and it's 1.5A model PSU and needs 1.45A.

I'm gonna have to return it but I'm wondering if it's worth the hassle of trying the 2A version instead?
#46
Thank you both.

This one has the right ampage but I'm unsure of the polarity and jack size. I'm wondering if 5.5mm x 2.5mm will be close enough.
http://www.radioshackuk.co.uk/epages/BT2533.sf/sec77b4820ea4/?ObjectPath=/Shops/BT2533/Products/661-0403

I also found this one on Ebay that has switchable polarity too but again not sure about the jack size.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120704410932&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

I know the jack size ison the IFU 30 definately difference to the common size for megadrive ,SNES, Core grafx etc..

I suppose I could always just order one and cut the jack off the 110v PSU (with stepdown) I currenly use and attach it to a new PSU. Is this hard to do?
#47
I'm trying to get a generic UK PSU for an IFU-30.

I know I need 9V DC 1450MA / inside negative polarity.

I'm trying to find out the jack size that plugs into the console as it is a strange size.

Does anyone know the dimensions or part number please?

Thanks.  :)
#48
US and Japanese card games all work fine. As does the system card 1 & 2 and all the cd games barring Choaniki and Bonk 3 in 1 which need the system card 3.

Incidently, does anyone know the if this PSU would be suitable:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120704410932&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

I'm in the UK. Voltage, amps and polarity are all correct but I'm wondering about the jack size....
#49
The drive sounds like it's spinning at a constant speed.

I got a bunch of other games with the system and they all load fine using a version 2 card.
#50
Quote from: nat on 04/21/2011, 10:54 PMTry not inserting it all the way into the slot. Insert it just enough so that you can still switch the power switch on but no farther, see if you get different results.
I have tried that too. Even when I manage to get it to boot, I press run and the disc starts spinning then it just hangs indefinately on the loading screen. I'm worried that my system might be causing the problem and getting a new card won't fix it. It is region modded if that makes any difference. I am booting it in japanese mode though, US mode does nothing. The guy I traded with even sent me video of the whole setup working before he sent it to me.  :?
