And I'm not a game designer. The best I can do is imitate somethings, but game design itself not my thing. I always felt more comfortable with a gamer designer in charge of that department, while I handled coding and such.
Well, lets hope this works out then, not sure I qualify as a game designer

The playable Demo is great fun but not reflective of the current games build. I would call it an Alpha build, but its still pretty nice.

What I would say though is I would like to see how the revitalizing of the game goes and if it becomes an active project again then we could release an accurate Demo. Especially since I had a very specific Demo for the game in mind.....

Welcome back, comrade :)

I love the idea of making a game that is built in the idea of a two-player "SMB-esque platformer" competition.

Now, you can punch me, but you have to stop everything you are doing and focus instead on:

Jungle Bros. in Neutopia

Thank you.

:)
Neutopia, that's a project thats dead. I have loads of tile sets working for it. Something like, 6-7 different environments swamp, snow, etc. Loads of other tiles working as well for it. But we had several projects at varying degrees of the development process. I would say 3-4. That's not counting the various concepts I was working on graphically for later consideration....

Quote from: OldRover on 12/12/2015, 10:03 AMlord cack and I figured we would bring the game to the PC... so we started a PC conversion. It didn't get too far though, unfortunately. I should still have all of the assets here somewhere... if you want to give it a go, feel free. I can also give ya the original source code if you'd like.
Definitely. But how would this work? Who hold ownership of this game? The group you guys were a part of, or a single person? How much needs to be finished?
Bonknuts, we briefly discussed doing some work together a year or to ago and had some PMs here on the forums but I never heard back from you at that time. You had some school thing going on and were very busy I recall so I figured that was it.

Anyway, I'm down for working on this (and again, I have tons of resources.... Tile work intended for Neutopia III etc.)
#9
As for how much work specifically needs done, the tile work is done from a design standpoint. Level design is where I am on that.

Sprite design is mostly complete I would say. Sprite animations is the big thing that needs done. Keranu got busy IRL and that stopped. Plus if the game is going to be a PC game then the animation can now be bumped up a bit further as well.

The music is like 98% done and AMAZING.

I spoke to everyone involved a few years ago about continuing on with the work without them and everyone was cool then. Though I think Paranoia Dragon was down for going forward with it. I know K said he was too busy and I don't recall what BT said. But one thing I know, I will be involved with whatever happens moving forward. But I am very excited at the prospect of working on this (and many other ideas and things I have rattling in my head) again...

Hey all, stop in for a minute and WHAM, awesome people are talking about Jungle Bros.

As for assets, I have all but the music. Tiles, sprites, everything.

As for the game itself, Jungle Bros. Is a complicated beast. I have plans for TWO titles. One you are aware of, Jungle Bros. But the game was quickly eating through the PC Engines assets. So, I talked to Nod about porting that game to PC where it could be the game we envisioned.

But there is a second title I wanted to do on PC Engine and that game is Jungle Bros. Clash. It is a two player simultanious game like Mario Bros. You compete to collect fragments on each stage whoever collected the most won (out of five pieces). Their would be many stages, items to collect for high score and a variety of enemies to compete with in each stage.

I am always ready to get back to work with this title and the PC Jungle Bros. Game with who ever is willing to work on it.

Two votes and I will put in my opinion. I am ALWAYS going to fall on the side of original titles. I wanna see some great NEW ideas on my favorite old school platform.  :D

Hey, I found my two cents today. I have never been a huge fan of China Warrior. Had it briefly back in the day traded it off to a friend.

After this recent discussion I went back and gave it a try. Well, its still not my favorite. I DO love the HUGE sprites. I love the fact that it oozes charm, cheesy charm in my opinion but, charm non the less.

What I really liked is that none of the game mechanics in the game are wasted. There is a reason to punch, there is a reason to kick, duck, jump.... all things serve a purpose. That is an under appreciated aspect of this game that rarely comes up in discussions.

Also, people don't like the memorization aspect of the gameplay. Personally, I would take a game of memorization over being led by the hand or having to depend on jump that is on the VERY EDGE of the characters jump distance as artificial challenge.

While still not my favorite, its mechanics and charm are underrated making it a far better game than it gets credit for.

Also, I would play this game over getting kicked in the crotch. In fact, Im gonna do that.... play the game that is

Quote from: guest on 12/03/2013, 10:00 AMI would've liked a port back in the day (even the GB and GG ports were pretty good), but not now.  It'd be an awful lot of work to make, and I'd rather see such efforts put into something original.
More than agree, I like the ideas of ports, but if your going to go ahead and put so much effort into a game, why not just do something NEW

Agreed. Lots of praised heaped on these games but I don't really think they are great game. I suck at games and these were tough games so, that's part of the reason. Other than that though, their are just a ton of tiny little things that piled up to cause me to not really enjoy these games.

It seems to me that every 6-9 months this sort of thing just runs crazy through the various threads across these forums.

Usually it does involve someone new getting into it with someone who has been around for awhile.

Also, and this is probably more of a side note, but ARK is usually involved. That is in no small part because he is very active here. But, he is probably the most difficult person to understand completely. But, from personal experience and from just what I have seen around here, he almost always is coming from a place of genuine concern. Especially when it comes to game development issues. His verbiage is sometimes a source of conflict but people really need to give it time. ALSO, he is generally a person who sniffs out BS when he sees it and doesn't just sweep it under the rug, I respect that  :D

Also, as the only person across ALL of these threads who has released more ACTUAL PCE titles than ANYONE else here, I think that his opinion on types of programs that work better should be taken as some rock solid advice.

My comment about MS Paint is true. The graphic work I did with Mysterious Song, Pyramid Plunder, and Jungle Bros. (along with others I have been working on) have ALL been done in MS Paint. Proving that it technically doesn't matter WHAT paint program you use. But, if I were to think about getting a better program, it would be one that supports the files natively. Since I don't know which ones do, it would be nice to have someone looking over my shoulder telling me, "Hey dude, that program works but, this one supports the type of file you will be using and will make things easier in the long run.".... and that seems to me is all that was said.

Either way, it really is whatever as it will pass and siskan I would just say to you that in general if you give it time, you will see that most of what happens here is less harsh that it can first seem. It does take a measure of skin thickness but considering, as far as I know we are mostly adults here.... even if we don't always act like it. But, if this place isn't your thing, that's OK too  :|

(maybe im wrong though..... Im sure someone can tell me I am hehe)

Quote from: OldRover on 11/03/2013, 02:26 PMGate Of Thunder has more solid gameplay.
Rover nailed it.

Graphics, music, difficultly, and character are important, but gameplay makes the game. Lords is perfect for what it is, but outside of the strategy of picking levels and shopping, the gameplay is nothing more than gluing a thumb to the trigger button and navigating bullet hell for level after level on the D-pad (not that I'm complaining).

GoT has a much more advanced control scheme with its split-second weapon changes, reverse fire, and speed select. Not only are these genuinely useful functions, but they can be executed quickly without messing up the elegance of the two-button controller.

I love both games (graphics more on LoT, music more on GoT), but nothing beats switching to wave, reversing, and blowing the crap out of those ships that try to surround you on level 4 of Gate of Thunder
This is THE comment.... all the way down to the

"I love both games (graphics more on LoT, music more on GoT), but nothing beats switching to wave, reversing, and blowing the crap out of those ships that try to surround you on level 4 of Gate of Thunder"

Lord of Thunder has the more interesting graphics and the collecting crystals to buy things at the shop is great. The End bosses are massive.

But, the level design of LoT is pretty standard and the bosses don't have as much strategy as GoT has (In my opinions anyway). Also, something has to be said about the level progression of GoT. Each level just builds perfectly on the previous. That is lost in the "Choose a Level" route that LoT too.

I think that Gate of Thunder is not only the winner of this contest but I place it very high in the list of ALL shmups. It just has it all.

Quote from: esteban on 11/04/2013, 09:38 PMRover, I was thinking: you were heartbroken when you realized that an "official" sequel to Neutopia might not be feasible, so you poured all of your blood, sweat and love into MSII: ES.

Am I completely wrong?

Or is there a kernel of  truth in it?

Naturally, I'd love a Neu Neutopia, but with all of the refinements exhibited thus far for MSII: ES, I can't complain about a damn thing.

 :pcgs:
Well, I know as far as my end goes, I don't plan on working on Neutopia III. I had done loads of tile work for a planned NIII but I have been working further on those tilesets and they are now in the developmental stage of an entire new project with them. I am not exactly certain the platform this project will come to, if it ever comes to light. But, the tile work is great and I am pretty excited about their potential. Don't take this for anything more than what it sounds like though.... this is NOT an announcement of a PCE title, but it could eventually be one :)

Also, like to add this is not something I have brought to the attention of Frozen Utopia. This is just my own work, thus far....
#24
OK, I will start with two games close to my heart and a third that closely follows.....

Mysterious Song
Pyramid Plunder
Insanity

Beside the fact that I worked on two of those three games, these are MUST BUYS because ONE: They are great games and TWO: They are great examples of the living Turbo/PCE.

Now, if I were to go on to a list of classic games:

Gate of Thunder
Ys Book I & II
Bonk's Revenge
Dungeon Explorer II
Neutopia (1 or 2)
Legendary Axe (I or II)

I think that covers some of the best games across a few genres and doesn't leave the US released games. If you go into Imports the lists gets much longer. This list is also not REALLY pricey (Dungeon Explorer II pushes it up quite a bit). Also, it is a nice list of CD and HuCard titles.
#25
I know what this is saying, out here in the open, but JB would be awesome as an ACD. There are soooo many things I would love to be able to do with it that just seem to be, well not possible.

Also, if we are talking about it not being worth it because of the time invested, who is going to take that step and try and work this thing out? If no one takes the initiative then it will ALWAYS just be there, taunting us with its goodness  :D

[EDIT]

Also, there are loads of other ideas I have that will most likely require that little extra to make it extraordinary  :D  :|

Honestly, I have a great game idea, it may only be one level and may take you about 3 minutes to complete but would you be willing to pay $6,000 dollars to fund it for me?

Im not angry that a person would do this, I just don't understand it because its not how I think. It just kind of blows my mind

The willingness to pay that much for this snipet of game. Why not just say, hey Homebrewers, we will help fund you and your new game ideas (don't get the idea I am asking, Im just creating an alternate point of view)?

Quote from: PCEngineHell on 11/02/2012, 07:24 PMOr for that matter if someone made something similar, corny, fun, and ultra violent. Not like the TG/PCE couldn't handle it with a arcade card and all. I'd even be willing to help with character design.
Now THIS is something I can get behind, EVERYTIME! Something original. I think whats nice about this community is that it really does have a lot of people willing to program titles (of course if we could all work together that would be awesome as well hehe) Sure, its their hobby not their job and you will have to wait till they have the time to complete the games but original titles and ideas coming out would be the best.

Quote from: Trenton_net on 11/01/2012, 09:36 PMAm I the only one who just shrugs and goes "Whatever. I got lots of other games to deal with. Like 600+ titles!"?
Apparently so  :P

The things like saying he has a "$10,000" prototype then turning and saying, well what if I only paid "$1,500" for it.

I mean I have seen people come and go in this community, some of them who ACTUALLY contributed to, real losses over my time here. We are a tough community and if you have been hanging around this community at all over the past near decade, you would know that. You would know what most people in this particular community expect. This shall be the last comment I intend to make, because I think it has honestly gone far enough, the points on both sides have been made and its a mute point he will do what he wants, the community will believe what they choose and we will go on as we always do....
#31
I think once you start talking about thousands of dollars, your never gonna get your investment back. That just seems like a massive amount of money to spend, especially on something that, while could be shared, is just going to mold away on a single shelf (or sold to a new shelf). Life is made to enjoy, thats why comments about owning games but not opening them, just blows my mind. I don't think that way....
#32
I have been in this community for a long time. I have been working on developing games for the community for a long time as well. I think it is funny to be talking about turning a profit off of a 30+ year old videogame system. I know that I treat my hobbies far differently than others, I mean I sold off every classic videogame I had a couple of years back and outside of getting another Duo so I can play Mysterious Song, Jungle Bros., and other titles I have worked on (like Pyramid Plunder) on actual hardware I could really not concern myself with owning games. But, the "business" of classic gaming ALWAYS gets under my skin. I don't mean the business of MAKING games for my favorite classic console. As far as I can tell, there is no turning a profit involved in doing it. I do it for the fun of it. Its the business of selling classic games for REDICULOUS prices and lording your possessions over others. Not really my thing. I mean this community does alot of cool things with the raffles and what not so I am not saying ALL the people but, there is a segment of the community, usually a silent segment, that really just make me want to leave.... I don't really care, but everytime a hot issue like this comes up it reminds me of all the previous things that happen on here from time to time....

10/04/2012, 09:44 PM
When I was a kid I loved the G1 show, saw the original movie in the theaters back then. But, as has been said, I don't think that the show holds up as well as some other shows of its time. But, I have kids now that are young enough to be into the shows and I must say that "The Animated" series (on Cartoon Network) and the recent "Prime" series (which is on Neflix if anyone uses that) are actually both very cool shows. Plus the action figures are ALOT like the TV show counterparts. Something that the G1 figures didn't really do (Hound and Ironhide come immediately to mind).
#36
Now, original ideas inspired by other titles.... Im all in for it. Like Zelda/Neutopia (Shadowrun/Rudoshin ). Incase you can't figure it out, Im all about original ideas and NEW games  :D
#37
There seems to be a rash of questions associated with emulating/porting games over to PCE. While thats cool and all, I really would just rather play those games on the original hardware and have the community working on more great original titles....

I know, its all speculation and just curiousity but still, it always just seems more wishful thinking that real productive concepts. Maybe Im wrong  :-k

I have a few all-nighter memories: Dragon Warrior, Super Mario World, Final Fantasy (1,2,3,7....pick one hehe), Ys I&II, Gate of Thunder, Street Fighter II, tons of games spanning from the mid 80's to the late 90's.

But, nothing compares to my friends and I when Everquest came out. When you string all-nighters into a week.... thats a whole different level of sleep deprevation and insanity.

I think I would like to hold off on a demo release for others just yet. I am pretty sure everyone is excited and when they get a chance to see (and play) the game, I think you will get even more excited for the project.

But, that being said, I would like to still keep it a bit "in house" for now. Maybe later this year, summer or so, we can release an ISO Demo. But I won't send out any other actual discs. I don't need demo discs up on EBAY for $$$ just yet  :P
