2/13/2025: Localization News - Cosmic Fantasy 3-4!

Rather earth-shattering news in the PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 community: Cosmic Fantasy 3 & 4 has been officially localized to English by Edia 30 years later for the Switch! Hard to believe! I know their script quality is poor given the 1&2 port but still good to see.

I built the amp tonight. Well, I built an amp anyway. Not the most common one for the PCE, but rather this simpler one:

IMG

Works great! I'm getting a nice bright picture now. Dungeon Explorer now looks, well, as good as it can anyway :) heh.

IMG

Just temporarily hooked it up in the Tennokoe. I'm not going forward with the Tennokoe, it was just a convenient place to try this out. I'm going to mount it in my Turbo.

Your mod is really awesome. I totally would go that route, but I've already committed to RGB'ing up all my consoles.

Quote from: CGQuarterly on 08/12/2013, 03:50 PMI'm not trying to give you attitude, but you did the mod without the amp, then complained about the picture quality.
Fair enough. Anyway, I'll make the amp hopefully this weekend and report back if I'm still having issues.

Thanks everyone!

Quote from: wildfruit on 08/12/2013, 03:17 PMyou can get rgb cables pre built that fit in the expansion port and are amped and output to a scart socket which is the route i will be taking as im not very handy but they are quite pricey
for my first go at modding im going to rgb my master system 2 doesnt matter so much if i muck it up
I'm in a similar boat. The reason I modded the Tennokoe was so I could practice on something I don't care that much about. My true goal is to RGB mod my TG16.

For my Turbo I plan to add a din connector then just get the din->SCART cable from retro gaming cables. I can't use the expansion port as I have the CD attachment.

Quote from: CGQuarterly on 08/12/2013, 02:44 PMIt's not that we don't know the answers to your questions.  I have an RGB-modded PCE that I play on a Sony PVM.  Every single game looks crisp, clear, and colorful.  Yours apparently doesn't.  My mod was done by the book, yours wasn't.  Do I need to connect the dots for you?
I gotta ask, what's with the attitude? Did I do something to offend you?

Several sites such as gamesx said the amp isn't necessarily required. So I thought I'd give it a shot. I'll build the amp this coming weekend and see what I get.

Quote from: BlueBMWAlternately you could try turbokons component mod
I thought about it. I think I'd rather go RGB though. Seems the component mod is more involved than the RGB amp to boot.

gamesx mentions that the amp is not necessary:

QuoteIf you can get the parts and have the ability to assemble this amp, you won't regret it. For most monitors it's not necessary, though as mentioned above some won't sync without it. If you use an upscan convertor like the XRGB-2 you'll have a very acceptable image without the amp.
gamesx.com/rgbadd/duorgb.php

I guess you guys don't know the answers to my questions then. Thanks anyway. I'll add the amp and see what I get from there.

Hey guys. I took a spare Tennokoe 2 and used it to do an RGB mod. So far I have not put an amp in, it's straight wires from the expansion port to jacks.

I have it hooked up to a Sony PVM 20M4U. I have a few questions:

-- Paranoia is bright as can be and is even brighter than what I get from composite. But Dungeon Explorer is so dark it's unplayable. Should I add the amp? Will that help DE and hurt Paranoia? Salamander is in between the two, it's on the dark side but not bad. Why am I seeing such different results per game?

-- The RGB is kind of blurry and just not that impressive. When I hook up my Neo Geo via component to the same monitor, it looks drop dead gorgeous. I was hoping for that same level of quality. Is the RGB out on a PCE just of a lower quality? Or is it the monitor? I have a few PCEs, and all of them give me the same results when hooked up. I have another PVM as well (20M2U), and both give about the same results.

-- When I switch from raw sync to composite video as sync, the quality improves a smidge. Is that expected?

Also Final Soldier is import friendly, if you've played Super Star Soldier or Soldier Blade, it's part of the same series.

mmmmm, a Contra on the PCE would have been splendid.

Quote from: meka on 08/02/2012, 12:23 PMYou can get new Turbo Grafx RGB modded, region switch or both from consolegoods.co.uk.
That would be the ghetto PAL version though.

Group shots? I have one handy

I've also got many cd attachments and American systems to complement those three sexy beasts.

So sad this game is so bad. It really could have been a great game if they had just tweaked it and play tested it a bit more.

Please don't add me, I already have it.

The Dragon's Trap is an incredible game. It got almost everything juuuuuuuust right. It's not too long, not too short, never gets tedious, always fresh, has clever world/level layouts, etc etc. It's just damn damn good.

Quote from: motdelbourt on 07/04/2012, 01:08 AMThe graphics are really good though. And the music is so memorable for PSG music. I can hum the overworld, transformation, and underworld music without even having played it for years. It's some of my favorite PSG music, now that I think of it.
The music is infectious for sure. I have it stuck in my head all the time for some reason. Like, right now :-/
#15
Definitely get Blazing Lazers. It's cheap and easily found. If you like it, then there is a whole slew of games just like it for the Turbo.
#16
I'd argue it's a below average game. I think they made it the pack in because the graphics were exceptionally good for the time. When I got my TG16 at launch initially KC blew me away. But it got old really quick. All it really needs is some more depth and variety though.
#17
oh yeah, I totally forgot about that one. Thanks for reminding me.

Quote from: NightWolve on 06/28/2012, 08:39 PMBut what's the cheapest adapter (how much more needed for that?) that you can get that'll let it work on a US system?
This is the cheapest adapter I've ever found in today's market:

There are some seriously tightly clenched sphincters in this thread. Relax folks, it's ebay.
#22
Quote from: Samurai Ghost on 06/26/2012, 10:43 PMI say it again, for $80 you can buy a PC Engine CoreGrafx AND a complete copy of Soldier Blade for PCE. Then you can enjoy some of the other games that have been hiked way up in recent years at a fraction of a cost.
Or you can get them on Virtual Console for a few bucks, or just download them for free. Most people who want the US version now would have no interest in the Japanese version.
#23
Quote from: Dyna138 on 06/24/2012, 05:22 PMIf your a PCE fan and you want to see what the system is capable of with an arcade card why not get one? I don't think an arcade card will break the bank, they are fairly cheap to find. Besides Sapphire the Neo Geo ports are very impressive and worth picking up and most of them are dirt cheap.
I bought FF2 for the PCE just to see how good the port is (I'm a huge Neo Geo fan). I was pleasantly surprised, Hudson did a great job. From what I understand the FFS port is even better.

Besides, if you don't have a Duo then you might as well just get an Arcade Card Pro, just a smidge more than a 3.0 card.

Quote from: Mishran on 06/24/2012, 10:52 PManyone else see another possible video game crash in the near future? :(
Why the frowny face? A crash in this sense would be awesome. These insane prices are for retro stuff only, the mainstream game industry is doing just fine. A crash would mean prices across the board would come back down again. The downside would be a lot less stuff for sale. It's these high prices that are causing people to dig through their closets and get some of this stuff out on the market.
#25
Any truth to the claim that only 1200 US 3.0 cards were made?

Quote from: DragonmasterDan on 06/23/2012, 05:58 PMIf NEC were doing the box art and it came out in the US, that's exactly how it would have looked too.
They'd make sure to make Maria's gender ambiguous.

Oooh I'd snap that up if I could. I hate it when I unknowingly buy boots. But buying known, interesting boots is good. Hucard boots qualify as "interesting" in my book.

I have an extra one and a few duplicate games (Keith, WC Baseball, Andre Panza and something else). I could do the whole set for $40+shipping.

Ah, the other game is Final Lap Twin.

I use http://www.ifttt.com to automatically notify me if any turbo stuff hits my local Craigslist. Otherwise you'll spend hours finding nothing.
#30
Quote from: Samurai Ghost on 06/11/2012, 07:39 PMOr stupid! If someone really wanted that box they'd be checking the auctions for it every day or so and would have snapped it up at $200 instead of bidding up to $535.
They'd have to be on ebay pretty much 24/7 to do that though. In the past I've been pretty damn obsessed with ebay and have been on it pretty much all day long via my phone. I've seen many BINs sell in a matter of moments. Cheap BINs do exist (many people have no idea what they have) and they don't last.

The problem with HDTVs is they are a total crapshoot for SD input. My Magnavox LCD actually displays old game consoles exceptionally well. But I just got lucky and most people find HDTVs have a really crappy picture.

A CRT is a sure thing, it will have a quality picture for sure.

And I run all my old consoles on a CRT now, LCD is for the new stuff.

What I really want is an RGB monitor.
#32
Yeah it's just a box, but it's one damn rare box :)

Is RetroBright better than bleaching?

http://www.superpcenginegrafx.net/cleaning_a_pcengine.html

Looks like from pics they both accomplish about the same results.

In my experience these things aren't worth much at all. My experience is seeing people buy the equivalent setups for NES, SNES, Genesis, etc. I've never seen anyone purchase or pursue a TG16 one. Only a very small number of people care about these things. And honestly I think most people consider them gaudy and unattractive.
#39
Wow, I'd be ecstatic to find a Keith Courage at a thrift store here. A Core Grafx? Damn man. Even one that was mutilated is a sweet find.

Quote from: galam on 06/05/2012, 06:05 PMI also can't believe I can't find It Came From the Desert for under 30, no box. Ugh
It's doable: http://www.ebay.com/itm/180890733152?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649#ht_500wt_1104

One of the keys to ebay deals is checking ebay very often. Cheap buy it nows are gone in a flash. It does have the drawback of making you pretty obsessed though :)

Quote from: guest on 06/03/2012, 02:38 PMFar too many crummy games for the system.  And most of the really good games go for far too much.
On the other hand, the system has oodles of fantastic games over in Japan. Japanese Saturn games have gotten pretty darn cheap, and modding a US system to play Japanese games is pretty simple.

EDIT: a quick browsing of ebay suggests the popular Japanese Saturn games are as expensive as ever. So hmmmm, yeah, Saturn's a tough call.

Wasn't The Kung Fu the very first hucard? Oh wait, no, Wonderboy was. I wonder if Wonderboy is upside down too?

My setup is a bit cramped in the guest room. We currently have a 2 bedroom condo. Looking forward to expanding into a house. TG16+CD, Neo AES, Neo CDZ and a Core Grafx 2 peeking from behind the TV. I tend to prefer gaming from Japanese companies with three letter acronyms :)

SetupJJ+Jeff.jpg

I've also got modern systems hooked up in the living room, but basically never play them (my girlfriend plays them).
