Fighting Street / Re: Do you hate them?

I love both SEGA and Nintendo. I didn't own any of the 16-bit consoles during their time, but if I had known more about the Turbo Duo I would have easily begged my parents to get me one. I was very young during the 16-bit era and I can tell you none of the TG-16's marketing was making it's way to kids at the time (actually I never thought about it until now, but the TG-16 might have even been discontinued by then). I only remember seeing one Bonk ad in a magazine and then never hearing about the TurboGrafx-16 again for a long time.

What Nintendo did with 3rd parties though is 100% bullshit. Although I'm not convinced all that much would have changed without it.

General Gaming / Pikmin 3

Did anyone else buy Pikmin 3? I bought it about a week ago and just "finished" it. Very cool game, I like how alive the world feels with all the creatures, weather patterns, etc. One thing I miss however was finding cool objects like a Famicom or Gameboy like in past Pikmin games, it's pretty much all fruit in Pikmin 3 although they all have the usual charming alien descriptions you've come to expect. An example being the name "Insect Condo" to describe an apple.

Apparently there's this big mystery going around the internet as to what exactly these secret files you find throughout the stages do, last I heard nobody had found them all but I have 6 so far and they seem to spell out a password of some sort. What exactly it's for I have no idea. Finishing the game with 100% fruit seemed to suggest there's more to the story, has anyone here had a jab at finding them?

I feel like such a god damn fool now. Sorry to Arkhan and everyone else for me being such a serious douche.

I might marathon Chris Bucci's Turbo Views. I'm feeling a bit nostalgic for them since they aren't released that often anymore.

Also been watching and enjoying GameInformer's Replays and Super Replays.
#7
I can't stand the New Super Mario Bros. series... but I'm still buying it :/
#8
Forgive me. I'm new here and I also hate fighting :P

There were quite a few Hudson Soft games on the system too, that and the awesome Treasure games.

Quote from: guest on 08/13/2013, 05:51 PMI like all systems equally, except for N64.

That thing's for retards.
Well then I guess I'm a retard. *shakes head*

I've never seen someone past the age of like 12 use this word so openly.

This game was easy and not just by NES standards. I think Capcom even made the original difficulty "EXTREME" which is just laughable.
Nothing wrong with Modern games, though I don't play many. Donkey Kong Country Returns on Wii is a very fine plat-former, and extremely difficult at points (though you can buy tons of extra lives).
Yeah and all the reviews complained about it's difficulty as well. It also could only achieve that difficulty while also having a stupid super guide in it.

I don't really agree with either side. I think it's okay when it's just harmless jokes, but I also think it's fair to criticize the portrayal of most women in video games.

Less fighting, more talking about the 4 or 5-player PCE game Old Rover is going to make :P
#13
Is there a PC Engine one too?
#14
I would have loved this when I was younger. I was always player 2 in Mario games by choice and use Luigi in every Smash Bros. game.
#15
So do you write off Bomberman 93, Super Star Soldier, New Adventure Island, and Rondo of Blood because they had predecessors too?
#16
There are poor uses of sound on every system, and I'd argue the Mega Drive tends to get the short end of the stick more often than the others. It's amazing to think some of the sound in licensed SNES/MD multiplats can only offer up buzzes and fart sounds on the same system that has soundtracks like Thunderforce III, Gleylancer, and Streets of Rage. Likewise the SNES has games ported over from the Mega Drive that don't stack up like Thunder Spirits (though it still sounds okay imo), but then has soundtracks like Super Adventure Island, FFVI, and Dracula XX (I almost like this soundtrack as much as the PCE version and it's not even on CD).
#17
This is why I'm glad I didn't own any of the 16-bit systems back then. I can appreciate all of them without any silly bias :P
#18
Not sure if serious.

The underpowered part is what really confuses me. It may not be the console of choice for SHMUPs, but I'd say the SFC had the most beautiful games of the generation.

Very nice. I thought about getting Lagrange Point a few times.

I think I might be asking too much from the PCE though :P
Are you?
I don't know. I assume a 4-player beat em' up would be very demanding of any system from the time, and to correct myself it should be a 5-player game :P
#21
The Vita release doesn't seem all that well optimized though. It suffers from slowdown that's nowhere present in the console release, the touch screen is a nice trade off.

I don't own it but I have to say it looks pretty damn good to me. I saw the FGC stream some multiplayer and the combat looked like it had a lot of depth to it for a beat em' up. Like the above I am also a Princess Crown fan and know what I'm getting into as far as repetition goes.

For me though I have to say this is probably the least attractive art style I have seen Vanillaware use. I don't really like the western influence on all the characters, the Amazon is just an eyesore in particular. Princess Crown, Odin Sphere, and Muramasa were all much better looking games.

I've only played Princess Crown, which was very gorgeous and had pretty good gameplay. However it went on far too long and ended up feeling repetitive. I enjoyed it enough to want this game though.

Out of my collection:

Akumajou Dracula X: Chi no Rondo
Ghost Warrior Spriggan
Super Star Soldier
Ys IV
Mahjong on the Beach

That last one was a joke.

The SEGA CD sold at least 1.5m, if Sonic CD figures are anything to go by. They could very well be false themselves.
#27
I don't mean to be rude... but you're off your rocker. You can get a boxed Super Famicom easily on many import sites for less than or around $100, even with shipping from Japan included it will come up way less than $300. I don't know what the going price is on the games or converter you've included though.
#28
I personally would like some comparisons of actual hardware in the future. I might start it myself since I have a capture device and I do enjoy buying the same games on multiple consoles.
#29
A local place around here (also in Canada) was trying to sell a Super Famicom for $125 and that's without it's box.
#30
It seems I qualify now :P

Pikmin 3
Borderlands 2 on PC
#32
Seeing this thread makes me glad I have never bought a single item on ebay.
#33
That's so awesome.
#34
You know what we need? Some Spriggan and MUSHA comparisons.  Maybe some Robo Aleste to go along with it?
#35
I have no idea how to Haiku :C
#36
That's a shame. I did get that feeling from looking at it actually.
#37
I haven't used one, but I think I'd feel right at home with an Avenue 6. My favourite controllers are the Saturn model 2 and Genesis 6-button controllers.

I'd rather it to super smoothed out sprites that don't stick out too well from the background personally.

Doesn't Retronauts have a video series as well? If so that's the only thing I caught from them, and it actually annoyed me because they had so many facts wrong about the game they were playing (Mega Man Legends).

I agree with Joe actually. That combination of HD backgrounds and 16-bit sprites looks really nice, but I do feel like the backgrounds could look much better. Those trees in particular are bothering me.

Also did they ever say anything about fixing the balance of exp? or did they play the "someone beat the game without leveling up once" card again.

Damn that looks nice :O I didn't think S-video would give such a huge boost in colour. I do have a CRT TV that supports component though, so would it be best to just go like RGB to component (assuming that works)?

Probably should have made this like 19 posts ago, didn't know where to post introductions :P I'm really no good at these but here goes...

I'm 22 years old so I'm maybe younger than a lot of people here. I'm a newcomer to the PC Engine (owned my PC Engine Duo for almost 2 years now). What really got me interested in the PC Engine is a mixture of my love for the SEGA Saturn and awesome early CD soundtracks. I feel like the Saturn is a spiritual successor to the PC Engine in a lot of ways, so it was just a natural step to get into the PC Engine Duo. I'm pretty much passionate about all the consoles out there really, the sole exception probably being the original Xbox.

Introduction = talking about games according to me apparently

It pains me to say all of my retro consoles only have composite at best. I've been wanting to get RGB for a while, but it's annoying that some consoles didn't have it built in. If I go RGB with one I want to make sure I can do it with all of them first :P

My preferred TV right now for my old consoles is a 13" CRT. Games look so damn nice on it, even in composite. I used to buy gradually bigger and bigger CRT TVs before deciding I like small sets better. I find that early 3D games in particular look so much better on a small screen.
