Quoteso the ball just unscrews? or pops off?
Yup, it uses the same sized threading as the NES advantage. Not sure if there are other ball tops out there that may be compatible as well.
#2
Note to self: NEVER again remove the graphical overlay. Some of the nastiest adhesive residue I have ever seen in my life. This is a mess to clean up.
#3
So I picked up a boxed Turbo Stick today and was surprised to see that it actually had a black ball top, not the usual orange one. Was there by chance a black ball top variant (I'm guessing not), or did someone most likely just swap for their NES Advantage ball top back in the day? I was actually wanting to salvage a black ball top at some point so this is kind of convenient, but it's kind of random and I wasn't expecting to receive it like that.

Also, are there any Turbo Stick mods out there?

I should also mention that it's currently getting a much needed bath.

Quote from: Keith Courage on 03/22/2015, 11:08 PMNES replacement pads work just fine with the exception of the start and select buttons. No need to cut off any extra holes off of the pads either. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nintendo-NES-Controller-Repair-Kit-Replacement-Conductive-Pads-Lot-of-2-/171548325558?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27f113b6b6
Awesome, thanks buddy. I ended up ordering 12 sets of these just to keep extras around.

It's no suprise that I ended up breaking the rubber while I was trying to clean the contact  ](*,)

Fortunately, I can confirm that the NES rubber membranes are the exact same as the TG16, with the addition of an extra mounting hole which I can just cut off. So i'll just try and either find some authentic or quality reproductions and use the NES ones.
#6
Thanks for the suggestions so far, curious to know if those NES membranes naturally fit. I may open up a NES pad and see if the sizing is right.

Quote from: schweaty on 03/22/2015, 02:41 PMare you sure its no good?  ive had membranes like that and they have worked fine as long as they arent completely ripped out.  make sure the bottom (the part that make contact with the board) is clean.  if its shiny, its dirty.  you can clean them by rubbing them on a piece of paper (carefully since its torn).  you want then to look flat or dull (not shiny)
It works, but sometimes requires excessive force to get it to register. Since there's turbo on the controller, shmups still play fine but i'm not sure how great it'd be on platformers and such. I'll try and cleaning the contact and see if it helps.

Quote from: PCEngineHell on 03/21/2015, 03:41 PMOutside of being able to be fully modded, yeah they are fairly handy. I mean, you get game save feature for hu-cards. Kind of needed for stuff like Neutopia 1 and 2 and some other titles unless you want to write down long ass passwords.
Thanks, sounds like it's probably worth investing in.

Lastly, third party DC NES power adapters are bad. Now using the Genny 1 power adapter and everything works great.

Is there a place to get replacement rubber for PCE/TG16 controllers or am I SOL?

Thanks as always, team.
#9
Thanks for the support, dudes!

My PCE IFU is actually in the hands of turbo himself as we speak (for RGB) and I've ordered the few parts I need to give the TG16 composite out which i'm definitely looking forward to. I decided to actually use a TRRS (single 3.5mm audio/video) jack, gut the RF, and install it in the RFs place to avoid having to drill excessive holes in the case which I just know i'd screw up. I did also create one of those solderless composite cables for the time being that just connects to pins on the expansion port.

One last thing: Are the ten no koe 2's worth picking up? I know the backup isn't especially useful, but would it be worth buying one locally for $40 for future modding opportunities?
#10
IMG

Sometimes there are days when I just feel like an absolute noob. You're absolutely right, but I could have sworn that it was happening when I was using RF. I must have been mistaken. Any idea what could cause horizontal scrolling bars? It could very well just be the CRT i'm testing it on and i'll try it on my PVM when I get home tomorrow.
#11
I should also note: I'm not using an original power adapter. I'm using a third party adapter supplied to me by the shop I bought it from so this could very well be the problem as well. Any other first party adapters for other consoles (NES, Master System, Genesis, etc) that work perfectly on the TG16?

EDIT: right off the bat, notice it's obviously 9.5v where the TG16 requires 10.5v. I take it that's my problem. Can anyone suggest a proper power supply? I own most consoles so if another consoles adapter works for the TG16, that'd be easiest for me.

#12
Hey everyone, having a little problem with my TG16's video. It's occuring on both RF and the AV out via the expansion port. Most of the colors are alright but on Keith Courage the background is red (as you can see), instead of blue. Anyone seen this before or have an idea what's causing it? I won't be able to open it up and investigate it until I get home tomorrow, but when I can, i'll take a look inside.

Possibly a bad capacitor ?

Not really directly helpful, but Retrogametech had a video once where he picked up a TG16 that was displaying only a solid white screen so his repair may be relevant to what you're experiencing.

Link to video: https://youtu.be/-GwMxTPyleg?t=7m42s
His problem was that a few of the legs on one of the chips were lifted or needed to be re-flowed. So maybe it could be an issue with the same chip he had problems with?
#14
Quote from: guest on 03/18/2015, 05:58 PMYep, that's somewhat common.  I wouldn't worry about 'em, just think of them as battle scars from a life well lived.
This makes me feel better. A TG16 is a TG16 and I suppose it gives it character. I had the opportunity, and I took it.
#15
Today I picked up a TG16 setup for a discounted price due to the fact that it has seen better days. From what I understand, the console was probably stored with a cable wrapped around it (perhaps the controller?) which led to "outgassing" and ultimately burning/melting, which damaged the console. It's strange looking, though. This is apparently not a rare thing for consoles that were stored in warm environments for a long period of time and had cables wrapped around them. Any suggestions for maybe cleaning it up? Perhaps very lightly going over it with a magic eraser? Or should I just let it be? Anyone else experience this, specifically with the TG16?

Wow, that TB16 Splatterhouse stuff is amazing. Those masks look awesome. Thanks for sharing. I've never really looked into TB16 promo stuff so this is a good introduction.
#17
Quote from: Dicer on 02/13/2015, 11:26 PMIt loads a little bit but otherwise it's a very solid version.
Good to know. I've never been one to really complain about load times (this excludes NG CD and some 3DO games, ofcourse), so I don't think i'll mind that all that much.

I recently have had the urge to play Pang for the first time in years. I used to play a flash port of Pang throughout school (never actually played the arcade version) and have fond memories of it. I know that in an ideal world, i'd own a copy of Mighty Pang for the CPS2, but I need a good console version. Perhaps a bit hasty on my part, but I ordered a copy for the Turbo CD. Did I make a mistake? All of the videos I watched made it look like a quality port and I perhaps make it superior to the SNES port?

Is Buster Bros a worth owning title? I never hear anyone talk about it.

Also, good to be back on the forums. I have spent some time on other platforms but am hoping to get some much needed turbob time in. Also planning on getting the much needed RGB mod done to my IFU in the upcoming month or two.

Duo-R, this is real helpful, buddy! Thanks for the upload. I've been needing an insert for Ys for quiet some time now. Any suggestions for printing these out? Also, great work Ivan. Really dig the Gate of Thunder work.

Rather if I took this to Office Depot to get printed (I lake a quality printing setup), any suggestions on what paper to use?

Buy/Sell/Trade / Re: IC: CMVS /w unibios
06/22/2014, 03:08 AM
This is gross and strangely intriguing. I should probably see what I can do about acquiring this fine piece of hardware. Though thinking about it, the last thing I need is the Neo Geo fever. I probably wouldn't have a game to play on it for quiet some time. But perhaps it'd be worth it. My local game shop has a copy of Magician Lord. And on top of all that, nothing says Happy Birthday like a CMVS.

Ugh.. must.. resist... I've been on the fence for so long about finally buying into the CMVS. I'll give this some thought. Regardless, good luck with sale. This seems like a great deal!

Quote from: guest on 05/12/2014, 05:44 PMHeh, it's funny you bumped this as I just did something similar with a Saturn pad over the weekened.  I actually just put rocks on them to prevent them from floating and it seemed to work okay.  I'll have to try the penny trick.

It makes sense about the weights though, didn't someone post a link a couple pages back about doing it with ferrous iron and it's like crazy reactive?
I had a similar thought though my main concern with putting something on top was that it'd maybe leave an imprint since the UV light wouldn't hit the covered spot or did you tape the rocks to the bottom? And yeah, i'm certainly no chemist so I went and used the first logical thing that came to mind, fishing weights. They were bubbling heavily and after removing them, had deteriorated and were smoking. Hydrogen peroxide is pretty wild.

Quote from: Bardoly on 05/12/2014, 04:53 PMYou can (and should) go ahead and get copies of the recent CD homebrew games like Mysterious Song (among others).
Awesome, I haven't looked into PCE homebrew yet which is odd because i've payed a lot of attention to the Dreamcast and MD homebrew communities. Do you know if these games are still available for purchase? I went to what seemed to be the developers websites but it looks like both of those are sold out.

Thanks again

Nice, great raffle, galam. I love the classic MM platformers.

I've been badly needing something fun to play on my GG. Sonic Drag can only last me so long
If I'm suitable, throw my name in the hat!

Bumpin and still looking! I really need to acquire my first CD game.

I just got done whitening my CD2 unit as well as the bottom tray of my IFU unit and am extremely pleased with the results. I followed the steps exactly as Deletion did and used all of the same materials including the reptile lamp (my apartment gets no direct sunlight). I had the console under the lamp for about 12 hours total spread out across 2 days and the IFU tray for about 5-6 hours. It really does not take long to see a drastic improvement but the longer the better.

A couple of noteworthy things that I encountered:
  • I noticed zero fading of the labels on the unit itself so I wouldn't worry about the labels getting damaged in the process
  • Putting the plastics too close to the UV lamp may cause too much heat and therefore cause slight warping. When whitening my IFU tray, I had the top of the tray a bit too close to the UV bulbs and it looks like it may have warped in the SLIGHTEST bit (I wouldn't even say it's noticeable).
  • I had a hard time keeping the CD2 shells submerged and ended up using a ton of taped penny rolls in order to keep them submerged. I initially tried using lead fishing weights to try and keep it sunk but the peroxide seemed to deteriorate or act aggressively with the lead so I don't advise that.

I didn't end up whitening my PCE unit itself since I am content with it as is but I may put it through the whitening process again in the near future.

Overall, following the exact same steps Deletion took, I can confirm that the process works great for whitening the CD2 unit as well as the IFU tray. My pictures don't give a 100% accurate color representation of the console but it should give you an idea of the end result.

Let me know if anyone has any questions and i'd be happy to give you some answers!

Thanks again Deletion for the informative guide!

Found a helpful tip in a previous thread and was able to successfully disassemble it.
Get as small of a flat head screwdriver as you can and there are plastic tabs on the sides underneath the white tray. If you can wedge the screwdriver down the side between the white tray and the bottom of the IFU, you can pop the tabs out. I plan on making a video in the near future on the dis assembly.

My IFU is a bit yellowed and I wanted to take the main white plate that sites under the CD2 and PCE and put it through the whitening process. I unscrewed 9 screws in the back and notice that the back section comes loose but I cannot get the white bottom section to separate from the body of the IFU. Can someone explain how to disassemble the briefcase? Primarily to get access to the On/Off switch and the bottom plate.

Thanks!

Thanks for the offer, Quid! toymachine has the dibs on the Ys III. Being OCD about it, i'm going to see if I can get one with the insert but your price seems fair (especially with the included shipping from Canada) so I will certainly keep you in mind. I'm surprised this game isn't easier to find. Was Ys not an incredibly high selling game? Though I guess none of the TGCD library was ever really "high selling" in comparison to the more popular consoles of the time.

Nice, these seem solid. I'm interested in getting RGB for my IFU setup (though still contemplating whether or not I want to try to install it myself) so i'll give this some thought.

Quote from: madboom0522 on 03/24/2014, 10:20 AMThere's a copy on e-bay in great condition now...
I was hoping to buy it off someone here on the forums. Is that the typical going price for the game?

edit: looks like a I missed it. I saw it last night, though and was tempted but thought i'd give the forums a shot.

Ugh yeah that Duo R looks fantastic. I'd certainly be interested in this if I hadn't already picked up a setup of my own (though shipping would probably have had killed me). GLWS! Hopefully this finds a good home!

Looking to get a copy of Ys Book I and II (preferably without the map for costs sake). I would like original case/manual though and i'm looking for the English version so that I can actually comprehend the text  .

Let me know if you have a copy that you'd be willing to part with!
Prefer to buy it from someone in the US to avoid any unnecessary shipping fees!

Thanks

Quote from: Keith Courage on 03/21/2014, 12:50 AMIt's a protective film. Just pull it off. Sometimes those plastic covers can be difficult to remove when they have been left on for that long.
Awesome thanks for the help. I'll see how how much of a pain in the ass it is when it arrives. It came boxed which is pretty cool I guess
#36
Regarding the Core Grafx II controller packaging, when you bought the controllers brand new, did they come with a protective film on the label part of the controller (similar to the film that comes on electronics chassis/screens)?

Bought a Core Grafx II controller and not sure if the actual label is peeling or if it's just a protective clear film to protect the label.

Has anyone bought a brand new PCE/Core Grafx controller and know if they come with this film or not?

Ah like Lukester, i've also been utilizing my Neo Geo Pocket Color on the bus lately. I've been playing tons of Match of the Millennium and Puzzle Bobble. I also picked up a backlit modded GBA not too long ago and have been playing Astro Boy and Gunstar Super Heroes. I was without my Gamecube GBA player for a while but have recently retrieved it and am planning on playing a bit more GBA games in the near future.

Thank you, Sparky for your generous raffle.  =D>

What controllers do most of you use for more of the "fightstick friendly" games on the platform? Obviously a large majority of the library seems to work just fine with the standard control pad but are the fightsticks for the console, specifically the hori PC Engine stick, worth it? I also have a modded Street Fighter TE stick with a TE Kitty board in it which supports most of my older consoles (saturn, NES, Dreamcast, etc.) with the use of a custom RJ-45 cable. Does anyone here use a modded Madcatz stick with their PC Engine?

Was just playing some Soldier Blade and it had me wanting a more suitable responsive pad (I may also just need a better standard pad to play with).

Just wanted to see what most of you use for the shmups and even fighting/beat em up games. Also if anyone here has any experience building a PC Engine to RJ-45 cable, let me know!

Thank you everyone!

Quote from: guest on 03/14/2014, 12:41 AMHey! We chatted about a week ago about stuff. How has your search been for a PCE? I think I'm finally about to get one. I'm stoked.
Yo J! I ended up buying a PCE IFU briefcase setup with the S-Video mod which, if the USPS tracking system is accurate, should actually arrive here today though I have no idea which game i'm going to play first. Grats on possibly lining something up and let me know what you end up pulling in.

Greetings

So after lurking off and on for a year or so and spending the past two years exploring the Sega Saturn library, I decided to give into the itch and chose to delve into the PC Engine. Being born in the early 90's and having very little input on what console we had around the house, I was brought up with the traditional duck hunt/mario combo cart and TMNT 2 co op with my neighbor, never even hearing the slightest mention of "Keith Courage" or "Bonk". I suppose, ultimately, I was just a bit to late to the party. Now, as a combination of interest and fascination with exploring import titles and games never even released here in the US as well as the excitement for playing a library of games I know very little about, it's really got me really jonesin' to play and collect for the platform. It seems that i'm maybe a bit younger than a majority of the "veterans" here but hopefully as soon as my IFU setup (props to Keith Courage) arrives, i'll be able to partake in more of the discussion threads on the board as well as participate in the "Game of the week".

As far as personal shit is concerned, i'm a Computer Science/Computer Information Technology student here in Texas and extend, arguably, a bit too much of my attention into video games and video game culture.

Anyways, everyone on the forum has been real cool and supportive so far and I, hopefully, can get the chance to get to know you all a bit better as I begin to play some of the core titles for the system and embody this so called "Obey" mentality.

Haha thanks for the input. I threw it on there probably due to my slight beat em up craving lately and thought exploring the genre on the platform sounded intriguing. It's not on the top of my list but I figured it'd be nice to try at some point. I should probably visit the Streets of Rage series before hand though.

PM incoming!

EDIT: Thanks for the recommendations so far everyone. I'm getting more and more interested in a copy of Dracula X as well as Ys I and II if anyone has a copy for sale.

Quote from: Miracle_Warrior on 03/11/2014, 02:23 PMDefinitely the English version.  It's worth the money, I promise.  Don't bother buying a copy that comes with the map, it just inflates the cost without any real payoff.   I'll see what extra CD games I might have when I get home tonight.  I know that I have an extra JP Monster Lair if you're interested.
Awesome, thanks. I'd be interested in Monster Lair. It looks like a fun game, though I hear it can be really frustrating. Let me know what else you find though!

Quote from: guest on 03/11/2014, 12:15 PMIf you go for the CD version of Altered Beast, you'll need a System 1.0 Card or to run that rom off of a flashcart in order to play the game properly.
Ah I see. I will have a flashcart but I cannot use a 3.0 card for it? Thanks for the heads up.

Quote from: Miracle_Warrior on 03/11/2014, 12:17 PMYou'll definitely want to snag Ys Books I and II.  I happened to enjoy Monster Lair as well, and that can be had pretty cheap.  You could easily score both those games and have money left over.  The Valis games are also decent; Valis II in particular is relatively inexpensive.

Wait, are you just looking for imports?  If so, forget what I said.  If you can spend in the 75 to 100 range, I'd put every cent of that down on Dracula X: Chi No Rondo.  You can snag one without a spine card for under $100.
I'm open to both TB16 and PCE games. Not limited to one or the other. I hear fantastic things about Ys so I'll add that to my list. I'll also keep my eye on the Dracula X market. If anyone here has a complete copy (with or without spine), let me know).

Edit: Should I get the TB16 or PCE version of Y's I and II? The TB16 version seems to be pretty expensive. But that may just be eBay talking.
