That's what I assumed but was not 100% sure, as such adjusting vr102 and 103 did nothing really, it would increase the voltage but it was still maxing out at .25 any change would decrease the voltage.

I did break down and bought a new laser, it should be here today but that low voltage has me worried that it wont do anything to fix the situation.

Update,
That did it replacing the laser made it work with no issue. just did some adjustments after and bam loading perfect!

Hi all,

I'm working on my pc engine duo this one has had some work done,
replaced all caps, ic502, cpu, cover switch, vr105....
After all said an done right now it loads card with no issues, cd's wont work.

I have got it where the disc spins, but after adjusting for about an hr the best i get is set disc, the worst I get is the disc don't spin..

I have a tektronix 2236 scope with a built in counter, the lowest the clock seems to hit is 4.4467 and then it goes back to the top..

Also the wave form tutorial is a little confusing. 
Pull the RF signal from pin 2 on the P5 connector, and ground it on pin 1 of P5.
so If i connect pin 2 to pin 1 the disc does not spin,but if i just put my probe on pin 2 and hit start I get a signal but it is super weak! approximately .25v pk-pk.

At this point I am thinking about buying a new laser, but at $20 I was hoping for some input first.

I replaced the capacitors and added the region switch to this unit, I have had very little issues at all over the three years i have used it.

Every once and awhile the cdrom would not load but i think the spindle was just to low, I adjusted it before i posted and it seemed to work great.

also this is not the one i'm trying to fix "https://www.pcengine-fx.com/forums/index.php?topic=21208.msg463967", thats my last unit i'm hoping to keep.

Hi all,

It's been awhile, that's what happens when you have kids I guess..
I'm trying to finish repairing one of my duo's, it had a dead cpu that was diagnosed by thesteve, "thank you!" and I had put it in storage and did not get back to it.

I pop in a hucard and it looks great, no issues.


When I power it on with no hucard the cdrom menu is really messed up.


Currently the cdrom drive is not working because i need to replace vr105, so testing past the menu is not possible.
I was assuming the glitch was due to me replacing ic 520, apparently before I put it in storage when diagnosing the cpu I took out the ic but never put it back in. 

After looking at the datasheet I compared a sn74hc245 to this ic and I saw no difference, as such I used the sn74hc245 because I had some sitting on old parts boards.


I tried 2 different chips, same results on both.

I was wondering if this could be a ram issue, or I should just buy the ALS245A from ebay?

Any input would be helpfull thanks all!

System 2 IS ALIVE!!!  apparently pin 13 was dead the connection from ic906 and pin 13 was damaged even though i looked and the trace was fine still no continuity.. I popped in my only jap game and it worked, so at this point put chip 520 back in and try again i assume? and if the 520 is back in and it does not work i assume replace that chip.

System 1 is just all over the place, it seems like the 6280 is dead?

So I pulled ic520 from both units. They are still acting the same as before, checked around the cluster of Hudson chips still can't find anything.

Man these are a pain in the butt.. Lol

Ok so i got my probe today, I have a pin stuck low every power cycle so it is down to that bus chip.

What is the ic number so i don't accidentally pull the wrong chip? Lol

In addition my second dead one has all high on the 15 - 23 pins not 18 as that is gnd..

Well I am back, I got bought tools i figured i saw some of the saleae knockoffs and i would try one because they were so cheap.

I get my probe tomorrow but i tried the knockoff to see if there was data on the lines.
So my first power up and i found there was no data on pin 20 of the hucard connector.

i compared to my good one and on boot there is data on that pin.

Now the fun part, I reconnected it and wanted to make sure i was right on pin 20, well no pin 20 now had data but another pin "pin 22" had no data... and every time i power cycled it would bounce around..

so i am not sure if the logic analyzer is junk or what.

I will get my probe tomorrow and will report back what is going on then.

Is there any guide to see what signals i should be seeing?
I was thinking of comparing my working system, but it is acting a little funny too..

so I spent the better part of sunday tracing and coming up with nothing, I get payed on friday so i think i will spend a little bit of cash and get eather a usb logic analyzer or a logic probe.

what do you recommend?

I'm assuming the analyzer because i can save the data and easily compare it to another working console.

but it would be a cheap $50 and below one..

I Dont have a logic probe..
Right now all I have is a volt meter, I know not helpful in that situation.

I guess I will go and check for continuity on all the ic's starting with the 6260.

I think your on the right track with the ic's..

I tried to region mod one of my working ones and now it has the same issue as this one, white screen..

if i turn the power on and off quickly it changes colors, blue green white.. so on and so on..

I think i might have fried something when i was attempting the region mod, the fuse blew and everything..

So ya now i have 2 dead systems..

Sorry I failed to mention that,

I tried both jp, and usa cards nothing..
I hit the run button to make the drive start up like normal when you turn it on with no card in it, nothing....

Hi all,

I recived 3 duos from japan all with issues, i have so far fixed 2 of them..  O:)

But this last one has me stumped, I did some cleaning, replaced all the caps and all i get is a white screen mocking me when i power it up.

I replaced both 7805's and it reads 5v when the unit is powered on, i checked the cpu and all 5v pins are reading 5v.

There is no cards in the slot it should show me the load cdrom but it does not.

So i'm at a loss here, any input would be welcome..

But my question to the forum is should I region mod if I'm going to sell one or more of them?

Or should i leave them pristine for my fellow collectors?
